A woman in Mexico gave birth to a healthy baby boy, after performing a Caesarean section on herself with a kitchen knife, it has been reported. It is understood that this is the first time a mother and baby have survived such a procedure.
The 40-year-old women lives in a rural village, with no running water or electricity. The nearest hospital is an eight-hour drive away. It appears she took the decision to give herself a Caesarean, after failing to give birth naturally. She had previously lost a baby as a result of complications during labour.
According to Dr R F Valle of the Dr Manuel Velasco Suarez Hospital in San Pablo, the woman drank 'three small glasses of hard liquor' before 'slicing her abdomen in three attempts' at the Caesarean.
After delivering the baby, she told one of her other children to call a nurse for help, before losing consciousness.
The nurse stitched the wound with a sewing needle and cotton thread. The woman was then brought to hospital where she was treated by Dr Valle.
The case was reported in the International Journal of Gynaecology and Obstetrics. ↓
