braden is 6w2d and tonight before just laying him down i mixed a little cereal with his formula. i put in 1 tbsp with his 6 oz. he is eating so much and wakes up constantly to eat. a nurse suggested trying to put a little cereal in there, but im not sure its helping bc he still wants to just eat and eat. any ideas? did anyone else start their little one on cereal in formula?

The nurse at my pediatricians office said to start with 1 Tbsps per 2 oz and the doctor moved Belle up to 1 Tbsp. per ounce, so her bottles are quite thick.

Try the 1 Tbsp. per 2 oz and see how it works.

Of course you are going to get mixed reviews so in the end do what you feel is best and will work best for Braden.

When I looked it up online it says not to do it, unless in cases of reflux (which is why Belle was started), because it can cause food allergies. So I dunno?

Maybe that will do the trick then!

wow is he that old already?!?!?

never tried them on cereal before they were 4 mths they tried tastes of stuff...but i never actually feed them something
i think i read somewhere that the digestive system wasnt ready for it.
If your nurse said to try a little...it cant be bad...if he becomes constipated or has belly aches....you can go and slap her!!! :-)

do you swaddle him?...my kids werent good sleepers and some of the time i found it was because they would wake them selves ups....the hand jerks...the hand wacking their head by accident. try him on his side with rolled blankets at his back and a rolled up blanket on his front ....so he feels snuggly and cant roll onto his tummy :-)))

well im mixing it into the bottle to help fill him up b.c the boy can eat. he just finally fell asleep. trying to break the habit of always being held inorder to fall asleep. hes been a night owl, been up since 5pm, slept maybe an hour since then and its 330 now and hes just now out cold .. thank god too.. im so tired. and havent gotten any house work done at all b.c all he wants to do is sit up and stare at a wall,a nd forget a swing, you have to be holding him.. yeh cant be done, i start work again tuesday night. so hes gonna have to get used to not being held 24/7 ..

and he sleeps on his stomach. only way he will sleep and docs said it was fine b.c of the issue he had with his tummy when he was born, thats why i think the nurse rec.'d the cereal too b.c he spits up alot still, not ALOT like all the time but does it, he didnt spit up once when i put the cereal in there, so hopefully thins start working out. i dont want to rush him at all yanno, but he is almost 2 months old, and i need to be able to put him down without him whaling so i can at least pee, or perhaps eat once a day.

Get ready to scream ladies LOL!

I started putting rice cereal in Dan's bottle at 2-3 weeks old. I put 1 Tbsp. per 2 oz. AND I put it in every bottle through out the day. He was waking up every hour starving so his Dr. said go for it. He started sleeping 12 hours straight through the night immediately...YEA!!

I also started him on fruits and veggies mixed with a little rice cereal at around 2 mos. Dan was a little PIGGY...still is lol.

i never tried putting cereal in formula but if we did that over here our health visitors would go mad lol but i dont listen to them. i go for my own instincts......... when ellie was 3 weeks my mum tried her with rusk mixed with milk and ellie loved it and she had licks of jam off a slice of bread but wouldnt let her eat the bread lol but she loves jam
then i started her on baby rice at 3 months old and knocked her milk upto plus because she was a hungry baby
the health vistitor told me its way too dangerous to give her solids because she was 4 months.. the only thing she was allowed was forumla but my mum put all of her kids on solids before we was 4 months and dint harm any of us

my mom did the cereal thing in the bottle for my bro and sis. and we got solids around 3-4 months, the baby food that is. hell even the rice cereal box says, each kid starts at different times

I started all 3 of my kids on food early. By the 3rd month they were eating rice cereal with a vegie. I never gave my younger 2 cereal in a bottle, but my oldest had reflux (still does) so I gave it to her, in every bottle she ate. The younger 2 were spoon fed at a month old with rice cereal, before bed. They loved it... made a mess, but they loved it! My youngest is 9 months and he was eating table food smashed up at 4 months. The rules that the Dr.s hand out, change so much, every couple years it seems.

I go with what my mother used to raise all 4 of us.... and what her mother used to raise her children too.
I tell my MIL "No need to tell me I'm wrong, I have been a mom for 12 years... My kids are healthy.....I'm not gonna change my ways now!"

coart I have to cereal in kendra's night bottles due to her reflux. I am supposed to put it in every botthe, but if I do then she can't poop. Anyway at night I put 1tbs per every 2oz of formula. I also add a 1tbs of brown suger to make sure she doesn't get constipated (dr reccomended it) She does sleep longer ta night now though. About 6 hrs. I don't know if it has anything to do with the cereal or if she is just learning to sleep longer. You have to make the nipple a little bigger though so the formula and cereal mix can come out. People say it is not needed before 4 months, but it won't hurt him to try it out and see if it helps him stay full longer.

well he has no problem sleeping for a long period of time during his long sleep between 5-9 hours some days. today it was about 6. but he went back to sleep after eating and spitting it up grr.. and then woke up a little bit ago again and ate and took a bath and went back to sleep, which means he will beup all night, but i cant keep himawake b.c well, what the hell do you do to entertain a baby that is 6 weeks. lol

Dr Greene recommendations:

You’ve heard about it from friends, parents, and in-laws. You’ve seen it in Internet chat rooms and discussion boards:

“You’re so tired! You should put some cereal in your daughter’s bottle – then she’ll sleep through the night.”

“He’ll nap better.”

“Your son looks too skinny. You’re not feeding him enough. Add some cereal to the bottle – that’ll do the trick.”

“He still acts hungry? Try putting some cereal in the bottle. He’ll be much less fussy.”

“Spoon feeding is a hassle. Put it off as long as you can. Cereal in the bottle is quick, convenient, makes them sleep longer and cry less – what more could you want?”

Your pediatrician says this is not wise (except as a treatment for reflux). Dietitians and nutritionists concur. Introducing solids before 4 months might cause food allergies. Your well-wishers discount these recommendations because cereal in the bottle worked wonders for their children!

Throughout most of human history children were exclusively breast fed for the early months. During the previous generation or two, when bottle-feeding became very popular, rice cereal was often put into the bottle at a very early age. What were the results?

Most children seemed to thrive. A small number of children, though, did not tolerate the addition, because their sucking and swallowing actions were not yet fully coordinated. They inhaled small amounts of the rice cereal into their lungs, which led to pulmonary problems.

I’m much more concerned about a subtler issue. Babies are born with a wonderful mechanism for knowing how much food they need. During the early months, they take their cues from the volume of what they drink. Adding cereal derails this mechanism. It forces them to take in deceptively large amounts of calories. It teaches them to overeat.

By starting with a spoon, resting between bites, and stopping when your child lets you know he’s full, you will be laying an excellent foundation for good eating habits throughout his life.

A major study looking for the causes of obesity found that short-circuiting young children’s self-regulation of how much they eat is a major cause of later obesity.1 Cereal in the bottle does just that.

Babies that are fed this way may appear to be unaffected – but those few weeks of added convenience may result in a lifetime of struggles with weight. This common practice may have contributed to our being the most obese generation in history.

And it doesn’t even work. Scientists at the Cleveland Clinic studied the effect of cereal on sleep and found that adding the cereal did nothing at all to speed up the age of sleeping through the night. That first uninterrupted 6-hour stretch of sleep came no earlier in those who took cereal early.2

People swear otherwise. I suspect the reason is that kids do fall asleep a bit more quickly, and some babies may even go a bit longer between feedings. There is no scientific evidence, though, to support the claim that cereal in the bottle will help an infant increase total sleep or decrease crying.3

Drawing on the wisdom of experience and the latest scientific knowledge, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against adding cereal to the bottle. It may be tempting after your 16th straight sleep-deprived night to cut a bigger hole in the feeding nipple to add rice cereal. But it won’t offer lasting help, and it may be giving your baby a lasting gift that both of you will regret.

Try switching to a Formula which is more suitable for a hungry baby. SMA White is an example of this.

well AS, it was not soley for sleep, he sleeps fine, my problem with his sleep is he is up all night and sleeps ALL day. its that he is already trying to eat 7 ounces at night, every ounce i stop and burp him, wait a few minutes and offer it back, if he doesnt want it he doesnt take it. i did call my pediatricians nurse today b.c they are open on saturdays and she said a tbsp once a day is fine, esp b.c he did have reflux problems when he was born. so putting one tbsp in a 6 oz of formula and him being satisfied after only about 5 instead of 7, is better, and he is more than likely getting the same amount of calories he would be getting if he ate the full 6-7 ounces. i dont put it in every bottle, only the last one before his actual bedtime. the pediatrician reassured me he was going to be fine, and that it was perfectly normal and healthy if he takes to it.

i did try this early as my mum did it with me and id donre it with my older son, but he didnt like it and wouldnt take it..id had to use a bigger teat because the rusk was thicker ,he wouldnt drink it so i gave up on it.i tried him on solids at 3 months as id done with my older son but he wasnt ready till about 3 and a half months.but every baby and mum different ,some mums swear by it and some arent keen,i was glad he didnt like it tho,i agree with what atomic says about taking food from the spoon.

plus he choked a bit on it and panicked me but if the nurse suggested it ,it did seem to work with my older son he liked it and did seem to sleep better and was more content but things were so different then.

i basically went by the book with zac until we found he had reflux. that was around 6 weeks old then. and solids i started at 3 months. just one thing every two weeks though.

but with alyssa.....that was a whole new ballgame! i quickly learned that each child is different! she would literally drink so much formula that she just couldn't hold it all. she would drink and get sick and still want more! so when she was like 3 or 4 weeks old i started putting the cereal in her bottles. and by the time she was 2 months old we were feeding her some baby food too. she was definitely an eater lolol.

just do what works for you and your child!

I agree that sometimes not even the doc knows. I have gotten prescriptions for meds before but ending up not even giving mine the med - followed my own instinct and she was better. They want to stick them on antibiotics for every little sniffle, etc. I know they are needed sometimes but NOT all the time.

My cousin had 3 boys and she started them on cereal in bottles from the day she brought them home (2 days old) & they are all big now with no ill effects.
My little one started it in her bottles at 6 weeks due to reflux but her stomach was so irritated it caused her to have bloody BM"s so we had to stop it.
Some babies do fine with it and others do not - you will find out what works for your baby. Just give it a try & see how he does. Good luck : )

LOL! yep it was actually shawn that talked me into putting it in her bottles but at that point i was desperate! i was getting puked on every 2 or 3 hours! it was awful. i was afraid a little bit to do it but in the end i was sooo glad i did! the puking stopped and she slept longer. she still took a bottle every 4 or 5 hours during the day but she would sleep straight through the night.
