in early march i planted a pumpas grass bush. question...do i need to trim it sometime soon (to get it to grow a little bit more?? or do i just need to let it grow a little more and this fall trim it back?? i know your suppose to trim it in the fall so it'll grow nice and pretty in the summer time but it's still a small bush...and i'm afraid i'm going to kill it somehow (and it's REALLY HARD to kill those things)...sorry it this doesn't make any sense...i just woke up.

I have a clump of it, and I cut mine back couple weeks ago. If it's short now and all green I'd let it go, but if it has any brown on from last year, chop it off.

I KNOW!!!...haha...my hubby was iffy about buying it....he was like, i know these things are VERY hard to kill, but knowing you ash, i'm sure you'll find a way. but at first we had thought he had killed it, bc there's a special way you have to plant them, and he didnt bother cutting the roots to let it grow more...haha

I just threw mine in a hole and it's huge now. probably 3 feet wide...what color of feather's does it get on it?

you know when it gets larger you can split it and make more clumps? Mine came from my mom's, and she gave my sister a clump too.

i got the one with a white tip. that's what my husband said...we have a neighbor (whom i've never met) has a couple of bushes and there BEAUTIFUL. he told me just to go over there and ask him for a piece. i'm like yeah, i'll walk over there to a man i don't even know and ask for a piece of his bush..haha. i just went out and bought one on my own...lol.

LOL...in the neighborhood I live in we do just walk over and ask for a piece....everyone knows everyone, for the most part. I got alot of my starts from an older lady a couple houses down, she offered them to me though, I didn't ask, and I've given the lady next door some starts to things I have. Take him a pie and say by the way, I really like you bush...LOL...mind if I take a start?

i might just to that...cause i want to plant some more...haha. i've never met him, though my husband has...he's the type that will just talk to anyone FOREVER!!! i guess i'm not the most popular in the neighborhood..haha...when we first moved here i got into a screaming match with the mean a** woman down the street...i swear i thought someone was going to call the law. (i swear i'm really not like that but ggezzz....she's a nut case)..everyone was coming outside to see what was going on...haha

ooooo...next time your on myspace...look at my pics...i just posted my first pregnant pic!!!! i'm SOOO exicted!!!

I'll look at your pic then, but you don't look like you would start a screaming match with anyone...lmao....it's always the quiet ones.

HAHA...yeah...i get told that alot. i'm not a mean person...but she just had a mouth on her....i kept my mouth shut..but she got the best of me...and i said a few words that i really didn't mean. after it was all said and done, my husband thought he was going to make me go down there and apologize...yeah..he thought wrong. so, he went instead. still to this day, she won't even look at me, but if she sees my husband outside, she'll wave...but i don't care...she's just mean and needs to clean up her yard.

I'd have smacked him up along side the head if mine would have apologized for me...LOL....I'm usually quiet then I let it build up and ... B L O W ! ! !

Name: tubbybubble | Date: Apr 20th, 2007 12:10 PM
yeah...we exchanged a few words about it...and didn't speak to each other for a while....but ooo well...i don't care...as long as she stays outta my way and keeps her kids outta my yeard tormenting my dog and i'm outta her's...i'm sure we won't have a problem.

Thats good. I have all the kids in my yard in the summer, I don't let my kids run around the neighborhood, so they all come here, hubby gets mad sometimes and kicks them all home, especially when they start tattle telling.

Name: tubbybubble | Date: Apr 20th, 2007 12:14 PM
lol...i don't have a problem with them playing in the yard..but they really don't play...like like to egg on my dog when she's out there...and they do it out of spite...that pees me off....ohh well, i guess everyone has some problems with there neighbors..haha...well, i got to go get started...then off to work!!!...nice chatting with you!!

hey tubby.......around here....in BC, we cut ours in the very early spring. That huge mother one i had, was cut about a month ago....bit late actually. We cut it to about....18" high.

The grass itself......is near, impossible to split. The roots are massive on a mature one. So your buying a new one......was the right thing to do. The "man" would have been at it awhile....and likly caused damage to his own.

Actually, winters are very hard on pampas grasses. I lost the first one i put in. It was replaced. The trouble is....."so they say" the wind etc.....and cold.....can suck the life right out of a new one. One thats only had either part of a season to grow.....and in some cases a full season. Just fyi on the pampas grass issue.

I have four i planted last year........it was two actually, and as they were young.....i split them.......and that, was NO small task even unplated out of the pot......i dont know if they will come back. The huge one is......but i dont see life in the others. I will give it about two more weeks.....then replace them. This time in their entirety. See what happens next year. Oh well ya win some plants ya loose some.....i dont worry about it.......i just plant and if they grow well and come back........TA DA!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

I divided the most friggin enormous pampas grass you ever saw... That bad boy was about eight feet across... I just kept hacking and digging and I ended up with about 25 plants. I did the whole back of my yard like a fence. Just today I planted some new Pampas grass to hide the generator and the satelite.. They don't die back to much here..

well your mighty lucky........and its a heck of a job to get through one of those.......AMAZING! Nope must be our winters here. Again your fortunate on that.....man i would love 25 of those myself. The four i got last year......out of two.....are the pink ones.....they too are sooooooo pretty. I sure hope they do come back :(

The old one I divided was in Ohio... The new ones I've just planted are in Alabama.. These are the big white ones... They are so tiny right now they look like weeds.... They'll be enormous by June I'm sure..

Ohio........geez they got worse winters i do.....beleive than we do.....hummmmm startin ta think what i got told at the local greenhouse here.......is bunk? They were good enough to exchange the "first" dead on.....i might just dig up these too......and take them back......still the bill if you have that with them.........they will replace.......so thats good.......but i dont think i am buying the winter issue anymore. Do you do anything..um special to them when you plant......have i missed a step? Bugger me ......GLUM me :(

Don't plant them too deep.. The top of the rootball should be slightly above the ground... Not level with the ground..... and I never ever trimmed mine... In early spring I would just take a rake to it to remove any dead parts... Kind of like combing your hair. HA HA HA

well thank you so much for that info. I am going to get to the bottom of that "winter" business. I emailed UBC botanical department.........and form there i will find out EXACTLY reasons for fail......here in the lowermainland. Thanks for your imput.....i gotta so see if the new ones......are a bit low...that could be??????????

I just got a "small" response to my question babe. I dont know if this might have been the case...back in ohio......but here is what they said about grasses.......

Some clones aren't very hardy. Also confused with ravenna grass by some, maybe that is her Ohio "pampas grass."

Dont know.....but i am on the serch for an answer for mine. ???

Name: bebe9281 | Date: Apr 20th, 2007 10:03 PM
Hey!!! The one I had in Ohio was really really old.. It came with the house we bought.. Are they saying it is the Pampas grass that isn't as hardy?? When did you plant these?? Isn't it a little early to see any sprouts from them yet? Where do you live?

Name: maxieellis | Date: Apr 21st, 2007 12:43 AM
ummm the way i took it is some "clones" are not as hardy. Ravanes grass can be taken for pampas grass and maybe that is what what you had.

I planted mine last year......about june. The older one.....is already growning. The ones i split along with the old one is in the sun. It "appears" at the moment there is no life in them (the split ones). We live in bc canada......in the lowermainland.

When i find out more ......i will let you know.
