Anytime is an okay time. Just make sure to use sunscreen. Not to say you'll do it but it has happened, but make sure that you pay close attention even if your holding her. Occassion what will happen is that we won't be paying attention while talking to someone and all of a suddan out baby will be drinking some water. I've watched this happen several time when I took my son swimming.

In your daughter is 6 months or so, feel free to dunk you baby under water (if you feel comfortable). Make sure when you pull her up you have a big smile on you face and say something exciting so she knows it's nothing to be afraid of. Don't do it to many times. They actually recommend not dipping a child under more then three times because they could swallow to much water. If she does and you in a pool with Chlorine crackers are known to ease the discomfort they may have.

I was wondering this also. We go on vacation in our RV every April or May (where some of my pictures on E's picture site were taken) and I'm due in March... I've seen some little mesh baby carriers that are really light weight and allow you to strap the baby to your front and walk out chest deep with them. Then you're hand are free to toss a beach ball with older children also. Besides, those little 0-3 month swimming suits are sooooo cute!!!

I have been letting my little swim (in our pool) since she was about 2 months and she loves it. Im not so sure about the public pools though.

Some people give their infants swimming lessons! My daughter is too petrified of the water for some reason so she does not know how to swim yet and she is going to be 7 in a week! I feel bad, but I do not want to force her either. It's actually a very stressful topic for me. :(

My son is 8 months and I take him swimming I try to keep him out of higlly clorinated pools or mucky lakes. Thankfully my step mom has a pool and he goes swimming there. But I think it dont matter when you take them swimming as long as they are not frezzing and there inbelical cord has come off but that is just me

Thanks Amy. I just took her last night (we hit 103 yesterday so had to wait until around 8pm to go) and she is getting a lot more comfortable. I am going to make sure I start earlier with lessons with my next children for sure!

I think at anytime. We didnt take my daughter who is 3 now till she was 2 and now she is so scared of the water she holds on to me and wont loosen her grip, now i wish we had taken her alot sooner to get her used to the water.

I started taking my son the swim lessons when he was 5 months old. We go for half an hour in a heated pool with 6 other kids. A parent goes in the water as well. He is amost a year now and loves it. This summer ( its winter here in australia) I plan to take him to the beach heaps. We have bathes on the beach which are saltwater rock enclosed swimming pools.... that way we won't encounter any sea monsters!!! People love the beach here and I wanted to make sure Tana was comfortable in the water (I'm not so much). We both really enjoy the lessons...although slipping back into a bathing suit was a bit scary for me!

Where I live take your pick...... great white sharks swim just off the rocks (where people like to surf) bull sharks and jellyfish that are deadly. Newcastle is a surf town and the locals love the beach. I'm from Canada originally so I have all these fears from watching to many shows about the mosters of the deep!!!

Hi everyone - I'm new here, and I asked my doctor this same question. She said I could take my daughter (now 2 months old) swimming anytime, but not to put sunscreen on her until she was 6 months old, and to give her a bath after swimming in chlorine. My husband and I took her when she was 6 weeks and she loved it. We used the swimmers diapers and just folded the top down since they don't make them for infants. And we swam at dusk so she wouldn't get sunburned. Have fun!!
