My wife and I are considering taking a road trip this summer. We're not sure if want to do the cross country thing, go north/south or just travel around our state (we live in Syracuse, New York). While my wife and I are all for travelling, we're not sure about the kids. We've got three, all under 5. Has anyone else ever been brave enough to attempt this type of a trip or are my wife and I crazy?

Wow! You seem quite adventurous to want to do a road trip with such small children. I guess if they are good in the car then you don't have much to worry about. Maybe you could rent a camper to make the ride more exciting. Get a portable DVD player or something, to keep them entertained during long stretches of driving. Or organize songs, music, games etc to keep them occupied.

My husband and I would also like to try the road trip thing, we will soon have 3 under 5, I also considered the camper, or rv idea. But I like Tamika2's idea for having the planned activities while on the road. If you and your wife do the trip, you'll have to let me know how it turns out, I probably wont make my trip until next spring, when our baby is older.

Kids love a car trip, if you have an infant it might not be so fun if you are having to stop for diapers and feedings but the older ones will do well. If you need stuff for the kids to do while traveling, check out this web site: www.travelinkids.com Good luck!

Get a big motorhome and it will be like you're home away from home and make traveling with the kids easier.Camping at R.V. parks will be cheaper than motels too.

We took our two children (under the age of 4) from Michigan to Disney World - in the car -with no DVD player, and not only did we survive, but we had fun. Ahead of time I went to the $1 Store and picked up a couple things for each of them for the number of days we would be on the road. During mid-way during the day (when I could tell they needed a distraction), I would pull out their "goody bag" and that made them happy and entertained. Just plan to make frequent stops to stretch their legs and get out of the car. I think it's all in your attitude - if you're open and positive towards the trip and your children, it will be fun and enjoyable for everyone - including Mom & Dad!

During trips with children (we have 3), I usually make sure I have LOTS of snacks, juice, etc., and always have small garbage bags and hand sanitizer. I have always brought special gift bags full of things to do on the trip -one bag for each child. I give them the bags about 1/2 an hour into the trip. They know about the bags-but not what is inside. Inside the bag I include things like coloring pencil (crayons melt) & books, paper, stickers (just watch the windows!) small cracker jack box type toys you can get at the dollar store - that way when they get lost or broken it isn't so costly - and things like that. As my girls got older I would bring each one a walkman & extra batteries, gameboys, and I always take my portable DVD player. The DVD player is probally the best thing I can bring. Sometime they would fight over what to watch-but usually are pretty good about sharing. Good luck!
