I used to only work 2 days a week but now the kids are in school have jumped up to 5.
We used to have take out on the 2 days, but really we cant have it 5 days!
How do you all do it? How do you find the time and the energy? Do your husbands help? because mine doesnt ,not even with the house work in the slightest!

I quess you have to make quick easy to prepair meals. Such as pasta dishes, burgers and dogs of the gril. Also heating up leftovers is another option. Make cold subs and a salad, dinner doesnt have to be a large heavy meal just the last one of the day. I know some one who will ask the kids what they would like to eat often they will say cerial. If it fills them and they will eat it why not?

Make suppers that will last 2 days so you just have to cook every other day, that should help some. As far as cleaning goes, tell your husband either he helps out or you just won't do the things he takes you for granted for like his laundry and his errands and you will conveniently "forget" the special little things he wanted you to pick-up at the store just for him. After awhile he will pitch in!

I think this is one of the hardest parts of being a working mom. Considering I'm not really a great cook anyway and my kids (3 & 6) just demand my attention right when I get home - it is really hard.

However, I don't stress about it so much anymore. On weeknights I call what I do "Assemble" meals. One night is takeout, one night is sandwich night - the other nights may be salad/baked potato, bacon & eggs, Tyson frozen popcorn chicken, frozen fish etc with veggies, rice or noodles etc etc. I also have a couple of yummy - easy crock pot recipes. (example chicken breast, Campbells' cheddar cheese soup and 2 cans of chicken broth) I always have fresh veggies and fresh fruit available also. The cut-up veggies are especially good when the kids have the munchies while I'm trying to get dinner on the table.

The family dinner is very important to us but it is not about the food.

Something else that always helps me is to make sure I have a meal plan for at least the next two-three days. That way each morning I have an idea of what I'll be fixing for dinner so I'm not scrambling in the evening.

My husband clears the table after dinner and rinses the dishes off but he must have a phobia about actually putting them in the dishwasher!!!

Good luck

What do other people have as a regular weekday dinner? I just need a reality check.

I hate cooking. It is a bloody nightmare thinking up meals to cook and I hate it. I try to cook healthy stuff for my family, but I don't think they realise how much of an effort it is for me to do this day after day. If I was on my own I would live on cigarettes, coffee and toast.
