OBGYN or Midwife? Last week I had my first appointment with my OBGYN. Which I was nervous about because my ultimate desire is to have an at home water birth but had yet to find any birthing centers or local midwives. Family and friends who know me know that I have a bit of skepticism when it comes to western medicine. Don't get me wrong, I truly believe that there are many medical discoveries and procedures that we definitely should embrace, but I believe more so that there are just as many holistic approaches to most things doctors and pharmaceutical companies simply want to push their latest drug on us in order to continue racking in the billions of dollars they receive from patients each year. SO going to my first OBGYN appointment I had a small amount of anxiety that my doctor would not be supportive to the choices I was hoping to make throughout my pregnancy. Thankfully this was not the case, although I did not go into depth with him on my birthing plan like I thought I was going too. Regardless, he was extremely laid back and actually had a good sense of humor. Not the normal awkward doctor humor that makes you uncomfortable but ACTUAL humor that seemed to put me at ease for the remainder of the visit. The ultrasound was done and I was able to see my little olive sized baby as well as his/her heartbeat. I left the appointment thinking, "Ok maybe I will be fine with a standard hospital birth." And then out of no where I found a birthing center that offers at home water births! I began reminiscing of my dream to have this calm beautiful and natural birthing experience in my own home and felt determined to find out if it was possible. This Friday Andrew and I meet with Lucinda, the midwife and founder of Big Valley Mid Wives for our first consultation. I am feeling so confident and praying that this is in Gods plan for us. Prayers from everyone would be much appreciated. Can't wait to update you all! Till next time!
P.S. I know some (if not all) may have their own skepticism regarding midwives and home births and that's ok! I would love to share that there is a wonderful documentary "The Business of Being Born" that will answer so many questions and put you at ease just as it did for me.
