My son is 6 years old and is on methylphenidate (generic of Ritalin) and Metadate CD (longer acting version). For him it works very well. I can see the difference in 30 minutes. Sometimes it takes a while to get the right medication as all children react so differently. Some react well to Concerta which is longer acting (mine did not do well on that one; got more aggressive) or the Daytrana patch (again, mine did not do well on that one), others use Straterra.

The only side effect that it is having on my son is loss of appetite. When the medication wears off he will eat more. I let my son eat a snack before bed to help keep his weight up (normally I wouldn't do that; but in his case I do). I've also heard other people give chocolate protein shakes that taste good. My son takes 20 mg in the morning right when he wakes up, then I have the school nurse give him 20 mg at lunch. If he has an evening event, I will give him 10 mg about 1/2 hr. before.

My son was diagnosed early but I fought medication because I believed we could take care of things without medication. He ended up having a lot of trouble in school because he was not on medication. I have mixed feelings on it becuase I believe the schools should do more, but I also understand the benifits of medication. If you want to talk, I am no expert, but I can listen and tell you my experience which might help you.

thankz docmom that would be great. we have tried diet and we are doing behavoir modification, but finding that is not enough. We are currently waiting for an IQ test to be done through the school but as it takes a while to be done and the fact another child at the school is needing it done aswell. but thet are trying to speed things up before we go back to the paed in june. in which time we can do some research on meds before we go back and make or minds up to medicate or not!!! my hubby is adhd as well and all his cousins are too except the only girl in the family and all of them have been medicated in the past and not now because they are over 18 but we just want to make sure we know our stuff before we decide. Anything would be great about the medication would be appreicated we are thinking if we do we might try ritalin 10. thanks again Dannii.

My grandson is a classic ADHD. This comes with all symptoms. He was put on Focalin XR yesterday. This is a new drug that he will only take once a day in the morning. It only last 8-10 hours (school time). He then is on a multi-vitamin, super Omega (3,000 mg) which the doctor said will really help over time and a B-complex vitamin. We're still testing. He had every bad side effect possible with Strattera and that is why he was off any meds for 3 months and we started him on Omega 3,6, and 9. If you put Omega fatty acids and ADHD in your search engine, you will see why we started this regimen.

thanks glenda for your reply I haven't heard of that medication before as I'm in Australia and we don't have many to choose from and the ones we do have are: ritalin, dexamphetamine and clonidine. but we have recently picked the brains of our local chemist and found out there is a new one going to be released in the middle of the year. but our pharamicist said they don't know much about it yet. yeah so we only have what they have told us to go by. We have two months to get our son IQ tested and make up our minds if we wish to medicate him. Depending also on the results of the test if he has any learning difficulties or disabilities. We have tried the fatty acids before but don't seem to do the trick either unfortunly and the diet as well does not work for my son so as the only option we have left is medicating him and keep his behaviour modification going. And anything my friends keep telling me to do.

Your lucky you're in Australia. That is one of the places doing the Omega 3,6,9 fatty acid studies. They have either just completed or in the process of this study at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute under Dr. Alex Collie. They may have some other ideas for you six year old since they are working with ADHD. I've read another study where Great Britain is wanting to start the Omega 3,6 and 9 in the school diet. The problem so far is the amount of Omega. They have to have over 3,000 mg of Omega oil per day. That's quite a bit for a child so we have some really high mg pills. We're still testing though.
