My 9 year old son has been evaluated on numerous occasions. His diagnosis have been ADD, SENSORY INTERGRATION, PDD-NOS and now they want to drop all of them and just use MILD RETARDATION.My confusion sets in at this point. First off he dispalys most every characteristic for PDD-NOS. At the last evaluation they stated he was too social to have this. They once again testewd his IQ with the WHELCHERS IQ test. And once again it came back in the 60's. My son reads at grade level but struggles in most academic work, is currently overall about 9 months behind his peers. He functions indepently and has passed the adaptive skills test. His teacher does not feel that he functions in the mild retardation level. This test was independent of the school and I am worried about sharing it because they will lower their expectations of my son. What should I do?? I do not believe the diagnosis to be accurate. Has anyone been through this? Please help Thank you

katiemae,

Thank you for your encouraging words. It is nice to know I am not alone in my efforts. I have been researching the validity of IQ test administered to children on the autistic spectrum and have discovered that the accuracy of IQ test is questionable at best. Especially the test they used on my son. Children on the spectrum tend to do better on non-verbal IQ tests. My son also knows the directors and actors in the movies. He goes as far as watching the making of movie as well. Actually he started doing this at about 4 years old. Although he struggles in most academic areas, he does very well in reading, geometry, multiplication and spelling. I never believed his IQ to be a reflection of his abilities. I believe what you said about lowering their expectations on someone who has MR. Basically you never know what a child on the spectrum is capable of until they show you.My son is constantly surprising us has I am sure your grandson is as well. Once again thank you. I will not be sharing his last evaluation with the school, actually I think I will just burn it.

Dear Jaffe, Please look under Aspergers Syndrome. My son is similar but is very intelligent in some levels but yet has difficulty with school subjects

laura,
This whole process of diagnosing is exhausting. Originally at 3, they suspected aspergers but they thought he was too young to dx. Since then we have seen numerous doctors with different opinions, all the meanwhile he has been ib speech and occupational therapy. This has helped him evolve so much that now they say they can't dx him because he is too social. I believe he is PDD-NOS but his IQ has consistently been low so he struggles with most academics except reading. Thanks for the suggestion.

DON"T take the results of that test as mild retardation! I work with LD kids and have seen that diagnosis too many times! Go with your gut feeling! His teacher is probably right!

I was a personal aide at one time for children who had autism. The people would show up at school to test IQ's. I asked if I could go with them. They never allowed anyone to go. I questioned them before they went into the room, and found they only had general knowledge of autism. Many of the students spoke in a particular way you had to be familiar with to understand their meaning. Or as you know, you had to ask questions in particular ways to get the right answer. In my point of view, an IQ test should measure what the child knows, does not know, or the understanding of such. Often the results did not match the level we knew the student was on.

hi my son is 11 and your story sounds almost like my . my son has been said to have adhd, sensory inter, bi polar, and much more . this year they say his iq test is not from being dyslexia like they once thought know they say pdd or autism. he was consider to be a wild child in day cares and school . some schools could not even handle him.he has been through 5 schools and been homeschooled one year because he is hard to handle.his iq test said mod level of mental retardation. i dont know what else to do to help him. has anything worked for you?

My son has been progressing. He has problems with writing output , proper grammer, and legible handwriting. He struggles in math and reading comprehension. He has been retained this past year to the 3rd grade and he is 9.Taking that all in consideration and he is still progressing. I have him tutored in math and reading, he receives ot and st weekly.his IQ remains low but his acheivement scores fall higher than his IQ especially in reading.I believe therapy has helped alot but I have to wait and see if he needs special education classes. He has an aide and is in a regular inclusion classroom. He still has many deficits in socializing but hopefully it will improve the whole thing is frustration considering he has so many dxs. Hope this helps some.
