Angela,
you should call the pediatrician. Breastmilk is a laxative, and it is important that the first poops come out in the baby's first week because of all they ingested while in the womb.

Go with whatever the doctor says.

You are a new mother, no one expects you to know everything. Call your doctor's office with any question. They would rather have it that way then not calling when you should. You cannot be too cautious. Your baby is too important to be able to be too cautious.

Angela,
How is your Little One doing?
I hope he has a b.m. by now. He should have passed his merconium by now. If not, you need to contact his doctor immediately.

Please tell us how he is doing.
I hope you both are well.

My son has had a bowel movement since he has been born. He is now 12 days old. But he has not had a bowel movement in 5 days. I called the doctor and he said sometimes that is normal and to call him if he goes longer than a week. (????) He said we can also give him a sapository.o we might do that today. But does anyone know if they have baby ones? Or what kind I should give him? I will probably call my doctor and ask. But I will let you know!!

Angela,
only give a suppository that your doctor prescribes. Do not give your baby an adult dose.

Angela,
very happy to hear your news.
Welcome to the interesting world of green and yellow breastmilk bowel movements. lol

Oh, and a trick my mom taught me about little boys:

When changing their diapers, immediately cover their little watermakers with a soft cloth every time, because it is a guarantee that they will be a fountain every once in awhile.

Hey ladies!! Baby has been having some bowel movements now. But he had his two week appt. and he is still jaundice. His level is 14. So now the doc wants me to supplement with formula. Breastfeeding has been very stressful. I am trying sooooo hard not to just give up. I geuss we will see what happens.

i just want to encourage u not to give up. breastfeeding is the best thing u can do for you baby. but i'm sure u have heard that a millions times from people. but i bet there is one thing u haven't heard. i was doing some research on breastfeeding for a friend that wanted to quit and found some very scary things about formula. did u know that in the last 10 years there has been at least 10 recalls on formula? that's just in the usa. for the company and government to recall something it has to have had hurt or killed someone. and it wasn't just the cheap brands. every single formula company that i have ever heard of was on this list. just something for u to think about before u give up breastfeeding.

I would call the doc and see what he/she says. Keep up the breast feeding and be sure you drink lots of water, you can even try taking a half of a stool softener yourself. This is SAFE, just drink lots of water when taking it... the stool softener will enter the breast milk in small amounts and that might be enough to cause a bowl movement for the little one, and you too. Good luck!

Angela,

Please read what I am about to say knowing I am saying it with the best intentions. Also please understand that I have been a student of breastfeeding for over 25 years now, and I have been educated by experienced mothers, lactation consultants, and educated doctors, so I do know what I am talking about here.

I am greatly surprised to hear that your doctor recommended to supplement with formula! No, actually I am extremely concerned! Extremely.

My youngest had jaundice, she was on that biliruben wrap thingy that glowed. My doctor here at one of the top 10 hospitals for birthing (Hennepin County Medical Center) in the U.S. told me that breastfeeding was the best thing for her (which I already knew) because jaundice is due to the liver not yet having enough enzymes, which is normal for newborns. But some newborns do not handle it too well and breastmilk is plentiful in these very enzymes that the jaundice Little One needs.

IMPORTANT:
He specifically told me to avoid formula because formula does not have these enzymes! He said that formula actually puts more stress on the liver and would cause more problems.

Not too mention Angela that breastmilk is a natural laxative at just the right level, whereas formula has been proven to cause constipation, so for your doctor to put your Little One on formula supplementation when he already has a history of constipation should cause you great concern!

Oh Angela, Please Please get a second opinion! Find a doctor who is educated about breastmilk, for your doctor is not.

Please check out this website that has more information on it, I have found it to be accurate. Read it and you will understand why I am concerned for you and your Little One.

Doctors
do NOT know everything and it is our DUTY as mothers to make sure our precious babies are getting the proper and correct care. Many doctors rely on formula because that was the 'norm' for feeding when they went through school and they just are not educated about breastmilk. Most everyone can tell you that doctors, although very educated about medicines, really do not know much about nutrition. Almost all doctors themselves will admit to that! Breastmilk is about nutrition.

This is a cause of great concern Angela, please, for the health of your Little One, get a second opinion form a doctor that works with lactation consultants, or otherwise strongly supports the breastfeeding mother.

And don't don't don't give up on breastfeeding. It truly is the best for your child, and lasts only a short time in the big scheme of things with benefits that will last both you and your Little One both your lifetimes! It is worth the effort.

Trying to get that website address to come across accurately. The article is entitled "Breastfeeding and Jaundice".

my little boy also had jaundice and my doc told me to supplement with formula for the first few days. that is what i did because i didn't know any better and when its your first child u think the doc knows best. i was just reading tonight about how formula doesn't help jaundice at all. i am so mad. my poor baby had to have formula for no reason. i am especially upset after reading so many aweful things about formula.

never give a week old baby a laxative!!!!!!!!!!! you can dehydrate and cramp their little bodies!!! if you are that worried call your doctor, or give them a tiny bit of corn syrp in some of your milk its a natral laxitve that wont hurt the baby
