and yes you can mix the ceral in with the baby food, that waht my doctor said and the baby food book that i got, and im not sure but i dont think you can start him on meats yet

To my knowledge because i started my daugter on 2nd foods the other day at 5 months, the only think I noticed different about the dinners is that they have little shreads of meat and is a little thicker, the desserts have more than one fruit and the veggies are mixed with the dinners or they can come seperate.

ya i asked my doc if they are called stage 2 b/c of the consistency, and he said alittle bit, but mostly because they are mixed

I noticed in her chicken and noodle there were small shreadded pieces of chicken.

The way "gerber" explains the stages are confusing. Kids skip different "milestones", etc. I think its strange they go by all of that. I think you will know when and if Braden is ready for the chunker stuff. I've had Kaden on the kind mixed with meat since 5.5 months--I think you are okay there. He has been on the 3rd foods since 6.5 months. Of corse I've always added chunkier fresh fruits and veggies along the way so I think that is why he was ready for the 3rd quicker.
And as long as he has been through all the single grain cereals, he should be fine with the mixed.
Kaden has done this since 6 months:
morning: cereal and fresh or canned chopped fruit (usually pears, peaches, or bananas)
lunch: a 2nd or 3rd food (he is at his grannys--she likes feeding the jarred stuff)
dinner: what ever veggie we are eating for dinner, sometimes meat or cheese---if we are out somewhere he'll have a jarred food.
snacks: he loves those small gerber puffed things--they look like cereal and they melt really fast, I can't remember what they are called right now, or an arrow cookie, or sugar free applesauce

the thing i dont get is the schedule with formula along with the solids if i feed him solids i fee dhim formula but a little less usuallu 5 ounces instead of 7or 8. but then he is getting less formula a day? im so confused. braden only eats about 4-5 times a day with formula and usually 3 times with solids but omg im so confused.

When it comes to formula I'm a little lost there too---even with what Kaden eats it hasn't slowed his bottles at all. He usually has 7 oz every 3 hours---add that up and thats around 40 oz a day. I haven't discussed this with his doctor yet---cause I haven't been concerned till recently....but that seems too much. I think he is just wanting a bottle to "soothe" him. I've tried just going with less or just putting water in it when I know he couldn't really be "hungry", but that pisses him off. I don't know if I should be a hard ass about it or let him drink all he wants right now................

I was just reading in a magazine the hospital gave to me. It says to start your baby on cereal (not wheat) mixed with formula or breastmilk as well as strained vegies, fruits, and meats around 4-6 months. 6-8 months start soft table foods cut into small pieces (banana, yellow squash, carrots, peas, and potatoes, wafer cookies and crackers). 8-12 months introduce baby foods slightly coarser than strained, mashed potatoes, pudding, gelatin, crunchy toast, well cooked pasta, small pieces of chicken and cheerios. It mentions that not every baby will go by these guidlines so your baby may be ready earlier or later than suggested. It also said that solid food is a complimentary nutrition at this point, so they should be eating solids 2-3 times a day and formula fed the typical amount, just with less during a solid food feeding. As long as there is plenty of dirty diapers and their weight gain is steady they are getting enough nutrition. This article was based on the American Academy of Pediatrics, so hopefully it helped out a bit.

The article also said that a formula fed baby should be drinking about 21/2oz for every pound he/she weighs, so if your baby is 10lbs he/she will consume about 25oz a day.

Ok first of all, he is too young to be cutting back formula. Solids are for practice until 9-12 months, then you can cut back a bit if it works.

As for the stages, I don't know... I haven't given Kaden jar food but I do know that I was giving Kaden things like chicken by 6 months. Can Braden chew chunks?
The cereals are ok to go to mixed as long as he has had all the grains (some of them are wheat and barley etc. with banana)

Candice... We are in the same boat. My Kaden is eating 8oz every 4 hours, 24 hours a day. The amount of solids doesn't seem to matter, he still wants his formula. He is eating about 40oz a day but not gaining any weight. I have tried the bottles of water too, but he cries for formula. I have started giving him rice milk with dinner though, and that seems to set back his feeding a bit.

coart What I pretty much do is let kendra eat her formula as normal usually 5-6oz every 4ish hours from 7am-9ish pm so 4-5 bottles per day and in between I let her try some solids for breakfast lunch and dinner. She usually doesn't eat much of it, but sometimes she will eat the entire serving just depends on how hungry she is. My dr told me to just make sure that they getting at least 20oz of formula per day and not to feed so many solids that they refuse their normal amount of formula. so far it has been ok, I was afraid of overfeeding her LOL

at 6mo they can have pretty much what ever as long as it is not something that has common allergies like peanuts and shell fish. the stages go based on the ability to chew. if he is sitting up alone and crawling then he is fine with stage 2 or 3 as long as it is not too chunkey for him. He prob won't eat the whole jar so seperate it in a dish so that it doesn't go bad and you can reuse it. I try not to feed kendra jar foods I usually make them my self because it saves me a ton of money, it is healither and there is more of an option for flavors. so I am not 100% sure how thick the stage 3 foods are. I do know tha tthe ones with meat in them have a TON of sodium so if you want to give him meat I would just feed him what you and scott are eating that night for dinner since he can have soft table food like potatos or small mashed up bits of chicken and stuff like that.

between 6 months and 1 year, babies should be getting at least 18 ounces of formula a day! along with food that is . but nothing less than that if they are younger than 6 months

i just read that in my baby food book

randi were u first offing me? bc i never said that he was getting cut back on formula, just the amount at the feeding but then i give him another bottle in between. like instead of eating 8oz at once with a jar of food he gets the jar of food with about 5 ounces and then another 4 ounces a couple hours later. he can chew chunks hes been eating solids since he was 3 months.

I wasn't meaning to come off bitchy or anything... I don't know who I was talking to LOL I was just saying that he is too young to be cutting back on formula... That's it.

Still love me?

yeh of course. and i knew that but thats where it confuses me. it says he should be getting about 5 servings of veggies and fruits. so i tend to mix some, esp the peas with pears or apple sauce, he wont eat them otherwise. and i started him on the meats mixed with a fruit or veggie but i know his main source still is formula but if hes getting a bunch of solids where am i supposed to fit in all this formula without him overeating and puking it all up.

Somedays I have trouble getting Kaden to eat at all. He definitely would rather have a bottle sometimes.

For us though, we would do banana or avacado in the morning for breakfast.
For lunch it would be grilled cheese, frozen peas etc.
Then for dinner... a chicken or turkey and another veggie. The srevings don't matter a whole lot when they are under a year. It's all for practice and you just try and get them to eat a variety of foods. Now is the time to get them used to different tastes and textures rather than having them on a strict diet. Somedays Kaden doesn't even want solids at all, or he eats only a handful all day. You sound like you are doing a great job.

How are things?

good good. i am trying to lose weight again. i started gaining a bunch of it back from fighting, stressing and worrying and then drinking! lol ive lost almost 7 lbs since ive been here. ive been cooking everyday and eating every meal. scott has been a great daddy helping me and letting me sleep. i told him payback for 5 months is a bitch :) and he should get used to no sleep. we're trying to get braden ona normal sleep schedule he is sleeping solid from about 2-4am til 1pm. which is gonna be hard when scott goes back to work. but other than all that things are good.

Name: Randi | Date: Sep 29th, 2007 3:52 AM
Wow! 7lbs?! That's awesome. You haven't been there long, so that's pretty good : )

I'm glad to hear that Scott is taking everything so well LOL I hope you enjoy your 5 months of sleep now : )
I can't believe Braden sleeps that long! Kaden is 9.5 months and still up about 3 times a night : | It's drives me insane, but he is slowly getting better.
Have you and Scott resolved everything?

Name: Randi | Date: Sep 29th, 2007 4:55 AM
That's awesome : )
I figured things would be ok once you guys saw eachother again. I'm happy for you all.

Name: jillw | Date: Sep 29th, 2007 8:28 PM
Coart I am so glad that things are going so well for you guys!! You really diserve it. Hay how many servings are in one container of baby food? I didn't realize they were supposed to get so many servings of stuff. I think that kendra would be puking if she had that much. So I guess how big is a serving?? I rally have no clue I just let her eat until pushes it away which is usually about 1or 2 oz of food.

Now I am worried about feeding her LOL

Ok here is the schedule you guys tell me if it sounds ok. (the times are ruff estimates she is not nearly this regular LOL)

7am 5-6oz formula
8:30am oatmeal w/ a fruit
11am 5-6 oz formula
12pm a veggie
3pm 5-6oz milk
6pm dinner usually what we are eating meat and a veggie
7pm 4-5 oz milk
10pm 6oz milk

Name: FatallyYours | Date: Sep 30th, 2007 3:21 AM
he isnt awake enough for all that. he sleeps from 4am-1pm and naps every couple hours. lol i feed him when hes up.

Name: FatallyYours | Date: Sep 30th, 2007 3:22 AM
it says one serving per container. they have the smaller ones themedium and the big. braden eats half of the medium one. which would be the small one but we have himon 2nd stages

Name: jillw | Date: Sep 30th, 2007 7:39 PM
girl kendra takes little cat naps so it doesn't effect her eathing. Of course that is not set in stone or anything. there are many days that she only eats solids twice because I feel like I would be feeding her all day!! She sleeps all night but during the day she will take 2 or 3 power naps that never last more then 30is min. Once in a while if she is going through a change or doesn;t feel well she will take a nap for like an hour or so in the late afternoon, but that only happens once every week or two.
