Hello. My wife and I just had a baby boy. Reading on the internet I get worried about long term affects! He was born at 34 weeks. He weighed 6lbs. He's in like a oxygen thing to help him breath. Was born because complications w/my wife, was not born naturally. He's our second child. Just wondering if i should worry about blindness, deafness, mental retardation and other dieases. Doctor and nurses keep reassuring us everything is ok. All test's come back good, except of course lungs arn't fully developed. thanks!!

I'm really sorry to hear about what you're going through. I have no experience with that, but I would be optimistic if the Dr.s are saying things look good. I think that they just keep the babies there till the lungs fully develop, hope he goes home soon.

I too am very sorry for what you are going through. At 34 weeks 6lbs is a really good weight and little boys lungs do not develop as soon as little girls do. I would definately speak with the doctors about all of your concerns. I just know from watching birth day on discovery health channels I have seen babies born at 28 weeks and they have done well, as for the long term effect on them I am not sure. This was a long time ago but when my dad was born(he is 60 now) He was born at home and only weighed 1 lb. The doctor who delivered told my grandmother to leave him in his bassinet and he would not make it through the night. Well my grandmother put him next to her in her bed for the night and he survived and is still surviving today, very healthy with no health problems at all throughout life. I hope this story will give you a little hope and your baby was born at a good weight, my daughter weighed that when she was born at 38 weeks. My heart goes out to you, if the docs are reassuring you then I would try to go by what they say, they definately know best. Best of luck to you.

Thanks alot chris and michelle. Wife called this morning and said baby made a turn in the right direction. They said breathing is now close to normal rate and not so contracting and they've turned oxygen down even more. So he's doing much better.

34 weeks what does that make it almost full term or no I cant remember, My son was born 3 weeks early breech and the cord rapped 3 times tightly around his neck I had complications with my preg, the whole time, he is the most healthyest baby and weighs 28 pounds and will be 20 months old soon!!! Good luck

I wouldn't worry about any long term problems if you're Doctor isn't. If all tests came back good and the baby is healthy...other than underdeveloped lungs...there's no need to worry.

Many babies are born prematurely and grow up just fine! Congratulations!

Preemies born at 34 weeks usually have no problems. The fact that your son was 6lbs. is reassuring for his development. Preemies that are born between 23 and 30 weeks are the ones that suffer from long term disabilites like the ones you've discussed. Because he was 6 weeks early he'll have a rougher start than a full term baby but it sounds like he's doing great. Those docs and nurses have special training in dealing with these little ones. Rest assured-they will not give you false hope. I'm glad to hear everything's ok. I gave birth a month early and she had gastrointestinal problems and still does, she's five now.

Brian, I'm so glad to hear that! Babies are a lot tougher than they look. Hopefully your son will be home soon. Congrats to all of you!

hello brian
I just wanted to say don't worry, everything will be fine. I can relate to what you are feeling. I can tell you that your son has an exellent chance to be just fine! I know this because my daughter Emily was born at 27 weeks at 1lb 10 oz and spent three months in the NICU. She was very sick and tiny I was worried because of all the tubes, wires and breathing machines. Not to mention the machines beeping every minute to have our nerves in an uproar. I didn't get to hold her for three weeks after she was born and when I did I was scared because I didn't know if I was going to pull wires out and hurt her somehow.
Well she is now 2 years and four months old and as perfect as a baby can be. She has had no health problems to date and is as smart as a whip according to her neo-natal follow-up team. So keep your head up and know that he will be fine! I only wish that my story gives you some hope in this sad situation.

Chances are the Dr's and Nurses are better equiped to answer your questions than some untrained people on the Internet who have never seen your son. I would trust them and try not to be so anxious. Take care.
