Ok, so i need a little help with this one. I'll give both kids info:

christian-5 yrs. old-55 lbs. is currently in the eddie bauer booster seat that goes up to 80 lbs.

chloe-6 months old-18 lbs. (i think) is currently in the peg perego infant carseat that goes up to 22 lbs.

My problem is: my son just looks so damn uncomfortable in his booster and hates getting in it. when do i stop using it? do i keep him in it until the carseats max which is 80 lbs, or is that just the CARSEAT's weight limit in general and you don't have to abide by that?

Chloe-when she turns 1 yr., i want to get the britax marathon which goes up to 65 lbs. Then, i saw the britax roundabout which goes up to 40 lbs. Then, they have the britax booster which goes up to 100 lbs!

i mean, come on now-----100 POUNDS!?!?!?! who in their right mind would have their kid being that big in a carseat? and i just don't understand why all the diff. weight limits? i want to get the marathon, but if it only goes up to 65 lbs, then i won't get it.

am i making sense? i guess my real question is: do children HAVE to be in a carseat to 80 and 100 pounds or is that just something that parent's do/prefer?

Where are you from? In Ontario, the carseat rules are as follows: (at least it will give you an idea of what the general expectation is:

A new law goes into effect September 1st, making it mandatory for anyone
transporting children to make sure children are properly secured in either an
infant seat, child seat, or booster seat. This would apply to all caregivers,
from babysitters to grandparents.
Rear-facing infant car seats are required for infants weighing 9kg
(20 lbs) or less. Forward-facing child car seats are required for children
weighing between 9kg and 18 kg (20 to 40 lbs), children about one year of age.
Booster seats are required for children under the age of eight, weighing
more than 18 kg but less than 36 kg (40-80 lbs) and who stands less than
145 cm (4 feet 9 inches) tall.
A child can start using a seatbelt alone once any one of the following
criteria is met:

- child turns eight years old
- child weighs 36 kg (80 lbs)
- child is 145 cm (4 feet 9 inches) tall.

Hope this helps a bit!

A child should stay in a booster seat until he is around 4 foot 9 (8-12 years old). They say around 4 foot 9 is when a seatbelt with fit properly across a childs chest. My son will stay in a booster seat as long as possible. We recently got the cosco protek (top rated by consumer reports) booster seat for him, it has the back on it which can be removed once he gets to a point where he doesn't need it but he still falls sleep in the car from time to time and wanted the side wings for now. He loves his booster seat, it's roomy and he's not cramped in there, uses a regular seatbelt and he tells me he loves it. The original convertable carseat I got goes up to 80 pounds, it's forward facing, rear facing and can be converted into a booster and the new models of it go to 100 pounds. I stopped using the one because my son is so tall his head goes above the top of the seat which isn't safe, the booster seat we have is above his head and is adjustable to move as he grows. Here is a link that I like to refer to: http://www.aap.org/family/carseatguide.htm

I have no idea off the top of my head.

But I know there have been some really informative threads on BC about the carseat weight and and how long they are suppose to be used.

his knees have to bend over the edge of the seat, if they dont then he needs to be elevated do that his knees bend. is normally age 10 or 100pounds, but who really goes by that?

The longer they can stay in a seat the better. They should ideally be harnessed in a seat such as the Marathon until they are at least 65lbs and 5 years. Then they can go in a booster, but it's better to keep them harnessed. Most kids aren't tall enough at 5 years for an adult belt to fit them properly, even in a belt positioning booster like the Eddie Bauer. In even a minor collision they can be ejected. The Eddie Bauer is not a very big seat, so he might be getting squished. The Radian harnesses up to 80lbs, so maybe something like that would be better. It's made for a larger kid.

I'm sorry, but 8-12 years? That's kinda old. And the height thing is crazy too.. My friend is only 4'9 and she is twenty... so what she should still be in a car seat? And a 10 year old is in the 5th grade! Ha! That's just ridiculous. I was watching myself at ten years old. No way would I have gotten in a car seat. My 6 year old nephew is out of his booster this year, granted he is 75 pounds (not small at all). Maybe I'm looking at it from a "when I was that age" point of view, but yeah... Ask me again when my kid is 12... I'll probably still be forcing him into a booster... :)

Cars and their restraint systems are designed to fit the average sized person. Your friend is below average in height, obviously LOL
At 20 years old though, her skeleton is completly formed and hardened. She should have good muscle control and even though the seatbelt might not fit like it "should" she should be fine without a car seat haha. A younger child might not be. I am only 21 and I was never in a booster seat so I thought the same things when I read the requirments. Obviously a lot of things have changed since then though and they have realized that it is in fact safer to be properly restrained in a car. I don't think your child will care so much because they will not be the only one who has to be in a booster or car seat. It's the law now.

Those are both really sad... The parents put them out there after losing their kids, but it kind of explains the whole point about the boosters vs. 5pt harnesses. I have pages and pages on this stuff haha.

haha if you had to keep your child in a car seat until they were 100 lbs, i would have JUST gotten out of it!! im just over 100 lbs. when im not pregnant, im only about 105!! lol.
but my little sister was in a booster seat until she was 6.. she was about 60-65 lbs (i think, not completely sure)
i dont know if that helps but, its just my input!! lol.
