[ Original Post ]
So last night I was sooo thirsty so I opened up a big can of pineapple juice and drank most it! Well less than an hour later OMG terrible pains, I mean I was crying and I thought this was it! I even called the hospital and they pretty much confirmed what I thought that I was having contractions and to start timing them! Well after about 3 hours of this I started to feel better but I was thirsty so guess what I drank more pineapple juice ... same story less than hour I am in terrible pain so I googled pineapple juice and pregnancy and this is what I found:

Pineapple Juice

Usage: There is an old wives' tale floating around that pineapple juice will help a fertilized egg implant. However, pineapple juice is not recommended for use in TTC and/or pregnancy. In large doses, it can cause uterine contractions and bring on spontaneous abortions (miscarriage).

Recommended Dosage: Drink only in small quantities, if at all.

Food Sources: Pineapples.

Side Effects: Large doses may cause uterine contractions, miscarriage, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rash, very heavy menstrual periods. Unripe pineapple is poisonous, causing excessive diarrhea.

Gahh don't I feel stupid! Out of all the labor starters and me being scared to try any I actually had never heard of this one BUT I will probably NEVER drink pineapple juice again! Thanks for checking out my rant! Just wanted to inform everyone! -Karen

Gosh to me it sounds that juice could have been old. Sometimes those cans can sit at the supermarket without the date stamped on them, Geez that is scary.... I cant drink it, its to acidy for me.

LOL! Girl I was flipping out and THEN figured out I was making myself have contractions... I felt so dumb... like gahh I did this to myself! Apparently its a big no no, in pregnancy and TTC... so I thought I would share my pain and ignorance... lol! :-)

OMG I was earing a can (a big one) of pineapples about 2 weeks ago and I started to feel crampy. I didn't think contractions at all, but just like I had diareah (sp) cramps for about an hour. I never even thought to put the two together. Man it is scary sometimes what we don't even think about.

I know... I really had no idea! I was freaked out... lol! Apparently it can cause misscarriages in early pregnancy and prevent eggs from fertilizing in TTC's soo yeah no more stinking Pineapple Juice for me!

I love pineapples though. Oh well I guess no pineapples until after the baby is born. I wonder if some women are more sensitive to this then others?

Could be? I know I reacted pretty bad to it!

I used to love pineapple juice and the actual fresh fruit but since my acid reflux or GERD I cannot have any, the acid of the fruit kills my stomach...

It is odd becuase I love fruit and veggies, but at the befinning of my pregnancy I couldn't stand the thought of eating fruit and only some veggies sounded good to me. Maybe this was natures way of keeping me away from pineapples LOL

That's crazy. I wish I would've known about this last night. I started to have contractions that were about 5 minutes apart but they stopped after about an hour. (I was so disapointed) Maybe a little pineapple would've sped em up a bit.

Okay, don't get mad but I read this post this morning and I ate a can of pineapples...... nothing happened to me though!!! I just wanted to see if my body was ready to go into labor if I could give those contractions a little push. I guess I'm just not ready to go yet! : ( Maybe I should've gotten the juice.

Wait, is this only straight pineapple juice or can I still drink some Dole strawberry orange pineapple stuff? And what about the actual fruit? It's my favorite! Or is small quantities ok?

What I drank was out of one of those really big cans! Do a google on pineapple/ pineapple juice and pregnancy... what I found was not good! But it did say that the contractions come from drinking lots of it!

i think its straight pineapple juice, in most mixed juices like you mentioned its mainly orange, its my fave though too .. but the fruit you should eat in very small amounts to lessen the risks

This may be an old wive's tale but it still sounds scary.

What's even more scary is that I was craving pineapple yesterday so I had a small can and drank the accompanied juice. I'm only 9 wks, though. Hope it's not something that my body is trying to tell me subconcieously.

You should be fine :-) Everything I read said it takes a large amount to cause contractions, which I drank... hehe! Dont even worry about you craving it! I am sure it was just a craving and nothing more! Think positive! LOL!
