Harper was diagnosed with RSV (respiratory syncytial virus ) which is a viral infection of the lungs. She has a horrible cough and is extremely congested. The dr. is worried b/c she is only 3 weeks old, but he doesn't want to hospitalize her until absolutely necessary b/c babies often go in for one thing and come out w/ another. This infection can be potentially fatal and my heart is breaking for my little girl. My dr. hasn't seen anyone as young as her w/ RSV all year. We're hoping that she can recover on her own w/ out hospital intervention. There is no cure for RSV and since it is a virus there are no antibiotics or meds either. The most they can do is aid her breathing and keep her hydrated. SOrry if this is long but I'm so worried about her:(

i feel for you. my son got rsv at 7 weeks and had to be admitted because his breathing was so bad that his skin was a blotchy purple color. they couldnt even find a vein for an i.v. so they had to put it in his scalp. they told me that he would be in the hospital for about 4 days, but after he got his breathing treatments, he started to get better and was in there for less than 2 days, then we had to continue the breathing treatments at home with a nebulizer for a few more weeks. he ended up with athsma (he is now 8 years old) and his doc said it was probably due to the rsv which damaged his bronchial tubes, but she isnt 100% if it is from that or if he would have had it anyway. the asthma is not bad though. he doesnt have asthma attacks, he just gets winded more easily than other kids and will weeze, so he carries an inhaler when he is involved in sports. just keep a close eye one her. if her breathing seems different to you, take her in. rsv is nothing to mess with. good luck. i hope your baby is ok

I just replied under Kadens post. I am sorry about Harper. I have never really heard much about RSV, but hopefully she doesn't have to be hospitalized. I think we are going back to the ER tonight :(
It's very upsetting not being able to help them when they are in pain of uncomfortable and they are so little they don't understand whats going on and why you can't help them.

There is nothing scarier than having a sick child. I'm sure you guys are doing everything you can for her right now, and before you know it she will be better. Sophie had to be hospitalized for Croup once when she spent the night at my mom's. My hubby and I were in Vegas, and it was the most powerless feeling I've ever had. She did fine and so will Harper. You and your family are in my prayers. Stay strong:)

Oh kristy I know how scared you must be. The good new is though is that while RSV is very serious it is very very seldom fatal. Even if harper has to go into the hospital for treatment at least you know that she will be taken care of. It is good that the dr detected it early enough that she doesn't need to go into the hospital right now. How are they treating it?

just monitor her breathing..if you notice or any wheezing/distress don''t hesitate to take her to the hospital!! don't blame yourself!! There is nothing you could do to prevent it!! Keep her sitting up to sleep like in the swing or bouncy seat or carseat..that will help her breathe better! I hope your little pumpkin is better soon!! keep us informed!

Hi everyone..thought I'd give an update. She's doing a little better. Her color isn't quite as palid and her breathing isn't quite as labored. We have her sitting near her cool mist humidifier propped up on her little Snuggler bed we bought her. Thank you guys for all of your support and I know she can fight this.

Coartney,
She got it from me. I was infected in the hospital and was very sick after we brought her home. I got Michael and my mom sick...finally little Harper started to exhibit strong symptoms.

Koz,
Yes it is good that she doesn't have to be hospitalized right away. They checked the oxygen levels in her blood and they're 96% which is great also she's keeping her food down, so there's no need for the hospital yet.

that is really weird, you were infected, from the hospital?

Name: Kristy84 | Date: Jan 7th, 2007 8:36 PM
40-50% of kids are carriers of RSV and it wouldn't be so serious if she was older, but her age puts her at high risk for complications. Yeah, the hospital is full of germs. My friend went in last year for a minor surgery and came out w/ a staph infection. SInce, she was my roomate she passed it onto me. It caused a really big lesion that had to be lanced and drained. I was soooo sick from it..Hospitals are yucky places

jesus christ, it sound slike im better off giving birth at home haha

Name: Kristy84 | Date: Jan 7th, 2007 8:43 PM
it's no joke coart..it would be much safer if you're having an uncomplicated pregnancy to give birth at home or at a birthing center...I really want to do the birthing center next time; I can't deal w/ this again...she's still having such a hard time breathing...she goes back to the dr. tomorrow...I hope they don't hospitalize her

Kristy, I go away for the holidays and BANG, or should I say POP! You have Harper, congratulations. I have her and your family in my thoughts and prayers. If she is anything like you she will be a little fighter and will breeze through it. May she improve dramatically. - Love and best wishes - A Mom To Be (one day)
