Since this is my first time being pregnant and I go for my first ultrasound on Friday, I was wondering exactly how full do they mean when they tell you to go to the appt. with a full bladder. My appt. is at 11am, and I'm wondering when I need to start chugging water and how much. I'm thinking it's going to be kinda tough to hold it, since I've been having to pee every 5 minutes it seems. Thanks for the help!

I have no idea I was told I have to pee in a cup and that is it! I went to the Dr when I was pregnant with my son and I never heard that one before. I have no idea, I go the 1st to get my ultrasound done, I don't think that I am quite far enough along to keep on and on and on trying to see it. I am only 6 weeks I won't be 7 weeks till the day after the app. I will talk to you to keep in touch let me know ok!

That's what they told me to do - come in with a full bladder. I'm going to be 12 weeks on Wednesday. My sister-in-law said to drink 40 oz. of water about an 1 1/2 before, someone else told me that 24 oz. an hour before would be enough, so I'm just wondering what other people have heard.

humm I really never heard that but that is 2 different Drs tho! What do you want a boy or girl? This is your 1st baby right?

I'd be happy with either, but I think I'm hoping for a girl. My sister gave me all her baby clothes from her 1 year old girl, so I really hope I can get some use out of them. So cute!

I have a boy so I am hopeing for a girl but will be happy with a boy. We are both leaning to the fact that it is a boy already really don't know and don't know why but we are!

That's kinda how we've been too, only leaning towards a girl. It's so hard to be patient. Keep us posted when you find out!

you need to drink 32 oz of water and make sure you have it all drank by one hour before your appoinment. Your appointment is at 11am so finish your last glass at 10am. And having a full bladder like that felt like torture to me. But once the ultrasound tech got the most important pics she allowed me to empty my bladder, oh how wonderful that was. lol

michelle, do they do that so that they can get clearer pics of the baby? i was never told to do that and i had to ultrasounds..and everytime i went to the doctor i had to pee in a cup but not with the ultrasound. thats interesting.

Sorry Sabrina, I'm back. I'm at work, so I only get to check the forum when things slow down, which has been a lot lately. I guess we'll both find out soon enough if we'll get our boy or girl. Michelle, thanks for the advice. I'll make sure to follow it on Friday!

Yes having a full baldder pushes the baby up out of the pelvis so they can get the pics they need. You didnt have to drink any water with your ultrasound? I am not sure what you were saying. I have to pee in a cup e verytim I go to the doctors too, the test for protein in the urine.

Shan, at my OB they require you to have a full bladder as well, they recommend drinking 16-32 oz of water 1 hr before your appt. Just like Michelle said your bladder raises your uterus closer to the top for a clearer pic. Although, I'm not sure its necessary b/c I had to have an emergency U/S at ten weeks, I alreadly already given my sample, and it didn't look any different then the planned one I had the week before. The good news is that they only require a full bladder for the first trimester u/s. Good luck.

I didn't have to have a full bladder when I went to have my ultrasound done. My doctor said he doesn't know why they do that especially since it is so uncomfortable. He found out my baby's sex just fine!!

Simply ,the further along you are the less you need to drink.

Your bladder pushes your uterus forward so the OB can get a better view of the baby.... when you are as early as you I would suggest 2 or 3 large glasses. Finish drinking them an hour before your appointment, so 10 o'clock you should have drunk them.

You need to develop a level of self control. If you need to pee you have just got to hold it in, they will not be able to see anything if your bladder is not full.

At 38 weeks, I need to pee all the time so there is no chance of having a full bladder, but the baby is so big you would have to be blind or dead not to see her! hehehehe

I had an ultrasound done and I drank the right amount of water half an hour before and they saw the baby fine. I decided to drink the water closer to my appointment time so I would be able to hold it in and the doctor didn't even notice.

8 ounces. They just want you to drink a cup of water so they can see the baby more clearly just dont pee!
