We have a vaporizer that does both warm and cool. They usually recommend cool mist for sick babies.

Coart - we have to pour a special liquid in our humidifier, but not in the vaporizer. Is the liquid blue?

Ummm - Vicks can go in either one I think.... The liquid we have is some kind of purifier I think. I don't know - my hubby ran to the store and he's in charge of all things that plug into an outlet lol!

Sometimes warm is recommended. When Sophie had croup they had me put her in the bathroom with the steam, but every other sickness they told me to do cool. We actually run ours all the time because we live in the desert and (obviously) it's so freakin dry here!

I think the only difference is safety really - cool mist is recommended if you have kids because it doesn't have the potential for burns. And I've heard it carries less bacteria, but I don't think it's really that much less.
