there's nothing wrong with them, it's just b/c stupid parents are over dosing their children and giving it to them too often. Resulting in many deaths.

There are still lots of them out there though that are "safer"
I use Benylin for Kaden... They have stuffy nose, dry cough etc. All symptom specific medicines and if they NEED something for fever as well you can give them Tylenol.

I couldn't believe they are pulling them off the shelves!

So, what are supposed to do now, get a prescription for a stuff or runny nose?

It’s not the medication that’s that problem, it’s the parents that are "overdosing" their kids.

wow really ?? thats silly..
so everytime your baby gets a runny nose you have to go to the Dr to get a prescription and pay lots of money ??

You don't need to get a prescription... just make sure you consult a doctor or pediatrician to make sure that you are giving a safe dose of a medicine appropriate for your babys size and age.

ohhh okays. perhaps it is a good idea then ?

I think so because parents are overdosing their little babies... then they try and sue. I made sure I asked what to give Kaden and was given a dose chart based on his weight. Now when he is sick I know how much to give him and that it's ok.

Randi-If they pull cough and cold medications off the shelves where else are parents going to get them?

If not a prescription then what? Tylenol doesn't fall under that cold medication class does it?

It's not ALL cold medicines. It's basically Tylenol, Robitussin and Triminic. They are cough suppressents and nighttime medicines most of them with fever relief. I buy Benylin and it's very safe. No fever reducers, but you can give Tylenol along with it.

one of the main things they stated was that parents need to learn to give the babies body time and let it do its job. you dont need medication for every cough or sneeze. use or a humidifier or vaporizer. give it time. i dont use the cough medications of any sort, the only thing i use is basic motrin or tylenol

yeah this sucks because I just left the dr office yesterday for kendra she has a cold and another ear infection. he told me jsut to get her some infant cold med and gave me a script for her ear. I went to the pharm and they had pulled all of the infant stuff.

The sad thing is that there is NOTHING wrong with the product it is the dumb ass parents who can't figure out a dose! the really bad thing is that most dr's are going to say what my dr did and that was "cut the smallest dose in the childrens cold med in half" great now these dumb ass parents will really be messing it up! They were better off leaving the infant stuff out because desperate parents will be giving the kids stuff instead.

Just and FYI I decided not to give her the childrens, because until I can take it to the dr and have him look at it and tell me exactally how much to give her. I jsut had a voicemail on my phone from his RN telling me that he said to do that and I just want to be sure that he had all of the details before going ahead with it.

Lucky you :) I called about 10 different stores here and all of them have removed even thier brand off of the shelves. Kedra is so stuffy and I tried to put some of those saliene drops in her nose, but it made her nost start bleeding.

try vicks vaporizer, non water. it works awesome. u buy these little strips put it in the thing, its tiny, plug it in and bam vicks in the air. its awesome. or try the steam in the bathroom to help loosen up the phlem in her chest/nose

I jsut got back from the store and got one of big plug in vaporizers. you put vicks in it allong with water. I figuret that would help because it is dry in the house when we have to use the heat. I was going to get one of those vicks plugins, but I think that the moisture from the larger one will work better.

jill the only bad thing about the water ones is you constantly need to clean bc of mold/mildew problems from moisture n heat.

The other reason the ban is being sought is because they are shown not to be effective for infants. Most new Dr.'s give out the recommendation to NEVER use such medicines. Check around before doing anything and definitely check with your doctor! Also for those breastfeeding breastmilk is the best cure all, squirt some in each nostril for relief.

"Safety experts for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have urged the agency to consider a ban on these medicines for children under the age of 6 years.

A group of doctors and public health officials had filed a petition voicing concerns that the drugs were risky and not effective for children.

"There are really no good studies demonstrating that these medications work. There are no good studies that provide any information about appropriate dosing if they did work," said Dr. Steven Czinn, chair of the department of pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and a signer of the petition sent to the FDA. "In the 21st century, it is unacceptable to be marketing medication to infants and children that may not work.""
