When I got my membranes stripped my water broke the next day. I had no pain from the procedure, and no cramps afterwards.

I had my membranes stripped on a Friday morning. It was a little uncomfortable afterwards. Bye lunch time I was having cramping with turned into irregular contractions. They continued into Saturday, so we went to the hospital at 3pm. I also lost half my mucous plug that morning. My contractions were close enough together, but not strong enough. They checked me and I was 3cm dialated. I stayed 3 hours then they said I could go home and wait it out since I didn't progress anymore. My labor continued into Sunday and the contractions became a lot more painful. So back to the hospital we went around 10am. I was closer to 4cm, so they asked if I wanted my water broke, I happily agreed. That was a noon. My daughter was born 5 hours labor after only about 20 min of pushing. Sorry this is so long, but I thought I may as well give you a detailed account of my experience. Also I had the membrane sweep the day before I was due, and she was born 1 day late. Anyway I would reccomend the stripping to start things rolling. Good Luck!

They separate the bag of fluid from the neck of the womb. I had this done and my membranes ruptured that night, but I didn't go into labour. They induced me, but that didn't work either so I ended up by having an emergency c-section and the baby was born with Strep B and had to go into special care.

The doctor didn't even explain what he was doing when he stripped them and didn't stop, even when I objected to what he was doing as it was so painful. I should have sued the hospital.

I ended up with the c-section because of what he did.

Did you get tested for strep B before hand? We get tested at 37 weeks.,,,

No, I wasn't tested. They don't do routine testing in the UK.

I think that the doctors are pigs and treat pregnant women really badly!

It does sound like he swept them, yes. They should explain the procedure beforehand and ask permission!

They shouldn't go around doing these things to vulnerable women. Pregnancy shouldn't be used as an excuse to assault people. If these things were done in any other area of medicine or surgery then doctors would be being prosecuted.

Women are human NOT animals in the fields!!!!!!!

I had my membranes stripped twice, neither time helped throw me into labor!

My sister-in-law had this done every week for a month before she gave birth (two weeks past her due date). She was extremely uncomfortable and complained of pain each time. Just a note . . . she didn't have medical insurance so her care was paid for by the state and her care wasn't the best. I had excellent medical care during my pregnancy and my doctors never mentioned this procedure (my son was born one day past my due date).
