was wondering anyones experiences or opinions on this. My doctor is saying that no doctor will do a vaginal birth after a c-section because of the risk of uterus ruturing, since like 2002. Well now I am reading that it is completely normal. My sister had her first c-section and then 3 more vaginaly and everything was fine. I am so confused I really wanted to do vaginally... Whatcha girls think?

Your right on both. Alot of doctors will not do a vaginal birth after a c-section because of the liabilty that goes with them. However, on the same note some doctor still will allow a woman to have a vaginal birth after a c-section. If you want to do a vaginal birth and your doctor won't allow I would say find one that will.

I actually changed my OBGYN because I wasn't sure whether or not I wanted to do a vaginal birth or a c-section my second time around. My last OBGYN would not allow a vaginal birth because of the c-section. The doctor that I have now gave me the option, but after thinking about it more and more I decided to go ahead with a planned c-section since I'm one of those people who like to have everything laid out so that I can plan things accordingly.

He has been my doctor for a very long time so it makes it hard. I want to trust him because he knows my medical history and says it really is for the best anyway. Thanks for the input Ethansmom

Just want to the doctor today so I can relax for a while since I did hear a heart beat. Anyways, while at the doctors office I was handed a pamphlet on Birth Choice after a Cesarean. Apparently the hospital I am going to be deliving at required all soon to be mothers who have had a cesarean before to read this and then sign it saying that yes they still want to go ahead with a cesarean. The pamphlet that I recieved contain the benefits and risks of VBAC and the risks of a repeat Cesaren.

BENEFITS OF VBAC
* Faster time healing after birth
* Shorter time in the hospital
* Less chance of having a blood transfusion
* Less chance of a problem being caused because of surgery
* Less risk that the baby will have any breathing problems
* Quicker return to normal activities
* Greater chance of having a vaginal birth in later pregnancies

RISKS OF VBAC
* A tear or opening in the uterus
* Risks to the mother if their is a tear:
* Blood loss that may need a transfusion
* Damage to the uterus that may result in a hysterectomy
* Damage to the bladder
* Infection
* Blood Clots
* Death (Very Rare)
* Risks to the baby if their is a tear include brain damage and
death
* The normal risks of having a vaginal birth are the same with a
VBAC
* The risk of your uterus tearing during labor increase with any
of the following:
* Labor that is induced
* More then 1 cesarean
* Less then 18 months since your last cesarean delivery
* Need for medication during labor to increase contractions
* If a vaginal birth cannot occur, then a cesarean birth must be
done. The rate of infection is doubles if a cesarean delivery is
done after labor rather then before labor.

It goes on to say that some women should not try VBAC. If the cesarean scar is on the upper part of the uterus where the contraction occur the risk of having a uterus rupture is very high. If is is on the lower part of the uterus you have a much lower risk. The type of scaring you have on your skin may not be the same type of scar on your uterus. You doctor however can review your records to find out the location of your uterine scar.

RISKS OF A PLANNED CESAREAN BIRTH
* The risk that a tear may occur before a planned cesarean is 2
in 1000 because of the scar you already have on your uterus.
Tears usually occur during labor.
* Blood loss
* More scars developing on the uterus
* Infection
* Scarring inside the abdomen
* Injury to the organs inside your body
* Problems with anesthesia
* Blood Clots
* Risks in later pregnancy of problems with the placenta
* Death (Very Rare)

If you want to try for a VBAC and your doctor under no condition would do it (you had mention he has been your doctor for a long time) you can either stick with him and have another c-section done (if this is all he will do) or talk to another doctor. Doctor that will preform VBAC usually look back into your file to make sure that the scar on your uterus is, if it is on the upper part of your uterus they may not do it since this puts in higher risk of having a uterine tear. If it is in the lower part then they will not think twice about it. Again this does not mean that your VBAC will not end up being a c-section. Some doctors also take in consideration the reason as to why you had a c-section done the first time.
