Do you believe the type of music your teen listens to shapes the kind of person they are or will be?
I DO NOT.
My son listens to a great variety of music and some of the lyrics isn't exactly what you would call "appropriate language" but my son is a good kid (for the MOST part) LOL And I don't believe the music he listens to is harmful in any way. Some of it isn't something I'd want his grandma to hear but I don't think the type of music makes the type of kid at all.
What's your opinion?

My son is a drummer. His band is named for my grandfather, who died, but my grandfather would never approve of the lyrics they sing. However, my son is a good kid and his playing music keeps him from drinking and drugging like so many others. BTW, he also likes other music including classical.

That's like saying the video games cause teens to kill each other. A kid has to have issues to do that whether they play games or not. I think it's up to us to teach them morals and common sense, and if we do that right, it won't matter what type of music or games they like. My son did "try" pot a few years back and now is a big advocate not to use drugs. He bitches at his friends that he knows do it. He's also self taught at drums. He and his band are traveling to NC from here in GA to record at some studio next weekend. He's in an "underground" band and call their music style hardcore. LOL They play at a downtown warehouse converted into a mostly teen music venue. He thinks the stuff I like is tame. I love their instrumental part, but the singing to me sounds like screeching and screaming.

LOL tattudemom! Yeah I don't like that "screaming" type of "singing" either, lol!
I hear ya on the video games too. My son plays them and the only thing that happens is he gets really pissed off and wants to punch things when he doesn't win. That's when I say "NO MORE GAMES FOR AWHILE!!!!!" But if kids are killing people because their video games are doing it,then the kid already had serious head problems to begin with in my opinion.

its not the usic which makes the kids what they are.
If a girlie girl listens to gothic music, it will NOT make her gothic or if a rap type of person listens to emo, he will not turn emo.
Get it into your pathetic minds please (sry for my choice of expressing myself) ... people listen to the music they like and the music will not change them but they will change theyre music.
If you dont like the type of music your kids listen to, dont listen to is and ask them NICELY if they can turn the volume down or sumthing

No, my mum let me listen to aything I wanted. Well...I wasnt much into heavy metal but I loved eminem etc....she let me listen to it. And it hasnt ruined me at all. lol, im a responsible adult (well not an adult in the eyes of the law but i think to be one.)

And i will be doing the same with my daughters. Its parenting that results in rebel teens...if your too strict on them, or not strict enough.

xxblackxpinkxemoxx, I hope you're directing that comment to anyone feeling differently that might read this because if you take a look, everyone is in agreement with you, so there is no argument about it. :)

I'm happy to say my son just recorded his best-to-date two singles. They have just a couple more songs to do for a complete CD but are gaining popularity on the east coast (underground scene).

tattudemom,my cousin is a rapper and goes by "Tightest Whitest" He has a c.d. out called Reverse Discrimination. It's really not bad. He's been trying to "break through" for a very long time and gets promises but nothing solid as of yet. the thing that gets me about it though is he is BETTER than some of the ones who are WELL-KNOWN!!!!!!

In fact, one of his songs is called "Fast and Furious,(part 2)" and was ALMOST going to be played IN the MOVIE!!!!! BUT the reason it didn't happen was because they wanted more money from HIM to do it and he told them NO that he wasn't going to pay out any more than he already had for it. So they pulled the song before the movie was released. Honestly though I think he made a very bad mistake by NOT paying what they wanted because if his song would have played in the movie I think he would have shot to stardom overnight. I think THAT would have been his BIG BREAK because once the movie was out and everyone heard that song in it,EVERYONE would have wanted to know WHO this guy was!!!! (My thoughts on it anyway)!!

Sometimes it does get ridiculous how they want the talented ones to pay them. My son has put a good bit of money into it (mostly mine LOL), but they're having an upcoming show to promote the new stuff and sell T-shirts, etc. I keep asking him when's the real money going to come in and he keeps assuring me it's all to build the following and keep em coming back for more. We shall see. LOL

Yeah tattudemom, tell me about it! My aunt has poured thousands into her sons "career" and so far the only thing going for them is he gets $5.00 for each c.d. that sells in stores.
The thing that has me worried though is he isn't getting any younger and I just wonder what's considered "too old"? This kid has been to Bermuda and back LITERALLY!!!!! His expenses for the trip were paid for though by someone in the music industry.
They have had him go around to different radio places and got them to play his stuff.
He even has PHONE NUMBERS of some very "famous" rappers but still things DON'T happen!?
I just don't understand it. He really is GOOD at what he does. But all he gets are empty promises. And it makes no since to me why HE should have to PAY for ANYTHING!
You would think if they liked him so much they would offer HIM a DEAL and PAY HIM!
It's a wonder kid Rock and Eminem made it!
I think you just have to "meet" the right person at the right time to get anywhere.
Brian refuses to give it up though,he is determined that one of these days he is going to soar to the top and become very well-known and wealthy! Time will tell I guess if it's meant to be it will be,but if not,I credit the kid for giving it his all because he sure does!
Does your son have a c.d. out? If so,what's it called? Can I listen to it online?
Tightest whitest has something online I think. I will have to find out if you can hear any of his stuff or not and let you know. He had one of his songs on the radio awhile back. I believe itwas called "Booty" ? Not positive but it was a big hit for a few weeks on the charts around here. Why THAT didn't kick him off i don't know,i just don't understand it. He has been offered million dollar deals but then they didn't come through on them,WHY i don't know! It's just really tough!
I wish your son LUCK!!

This is a really old song and the vocals are much improved on their new stuff. So, if you can get past that, my son is the drummer you'll hear. They're having a release show May 20 with the new stuff and will probably post some of that at that time.

Hey tattudemom, I had a listen and I don't care for the "singing" but I LOVE the music!!! Your son's quite the drummer!
My son actually LOVES this type of stuff,I'll show it to him when he gets home! He likes that "singing" LOL

Name: tattudemom | Date: May 4th, 2007 1:32 AM
I just showed this to my son and he said wait until the new stuff is up. :) I love the music part too, and the singing is actually better on the new songs. I can understand a little of what's said. LOL

I hate to say it because I love the singer to death, but I told my son if he wants to be successful, he might have to lose the singer. Apparently, the kids that go to the shows like it though. LOL Also, he does sound better on the new recordings. They wont' be on the myspace until after the 20th. I'm just impressed because their all self-taught musicians. My son can play a bit of several instruments plus the drums. He didn't get that talent from me!

i do not think that the music shapes a kids attitude. LOL i agree with everyone and i think music is good, because if your kid is mad and they listen to music i think it calms them down. If your kid wants ot have fun then they listen to party music then there happy. No matter what music they listen to,they like it so let them. Even if the song has ad words in it just remind them not to repeat those words when not signing the song. I dont know if you guys have heard of the song: I write sins not tragigies by panic at the disco, anyway it says"...havent you people ever heard of closing the God darn (other word) door!" my daughter made up a different verison to it"...havent you people ever heard of closing the BATHROOM door!" lol i thought that was cute, and now all her friends sing it like that! Dont panic of your child likes music w/ bad words you should trust them enough to no write from wrong, and music isnt going to turn them into an evil nasty! My daughter listen to a lot of christian music too, so i'm not worried! oh and dont forget Hannah Montana! thats a different story though..my daughter is completely in love w/ her... ijsut cant wait till she looks back when shes 16 and says eww Hannah Montana! lol

i love that song and i think that is a pretty good modifacation my mom lets me sing cuse words but not certain words or grouped words god d*** or mother f-er or the f word at all but if i say them i'm doomed!

Name: mommy_of_too | Date: Jul 21st, 2007 5:25 PM
haha i'll tell her you like it! i told her that it's not her fault that the artist chose to put the bad words in thier and for her to know that if she ever said them to someone in a bad way she'd be in trouble. I dont really care if she SINGS them i just dont want her SAYING them. But its her that wont sing them. I mean she sings some liek crap or damn but others she turns down the music real low or makes something up (like bathroom door) and sings that real loudly! lol
