We are interested in getting another dog. We have 3 kids, and our "fur kid" is 3/4 German Shephard and 1/4 lab. We have been looking at many different breeds. We are interested in an American Bulldog, we know no one who has had them and I am interested in getting some personal expirence. Or if anyone has any other ideas.

I know there will be a lot of oppinions on this one to, so I will tell you what I know about them and my personal experiances with them. Here goes....I did have one not verry long ago I had to find him another more appropriate home, he was dog aggresive. He didnt like any other dog but the ones he lived with, the American Bull Dog is one of thoes breeds that are best in a home with no other dogs. They are wonderfull with kids although a bit big and rough at times, they are one of the most loving breeds. They just dont get along with other animals thats all. I would think if you where to get one as a pup and raised him with other dogs he may do fine. As I said the one I had did fine with the two dogs he lived with but did not like another dog. Thats not to say every one is the same and there are not exceptions to the rule. I would deffanatly recomend one, if you already have animals get him as a pup. My American Bull Dog was the beat! I just loved him and still think of him all the time. They are so funny with thier goofy ways, they just love to please and always want to be with thier family pack.

You know that I have little ones, do you still think that it would be okay?? Normally we adopt dogs from shelters, but I told my husband that I would want to get one from a breeder. Plus I told him that the dog would HAVE to go to puppy boot camp. We sent our dog Toby when he was about 6 months old. I wanted a really trained dog, because I was about to have my youngest. She just turned one, and we most likely will not get another dog until the spring, because we need to fence in the backyard. Toby we can let outside with us and he doesn't leave our side. He will walk away but only to go with the kids.

Why dont you get something more appropriate for the kids?

Let the kids pick it out. Actually it would be amazing to see what a child would pick out if it was their descission

I can't leave a big desicion(sp) like what kind of dog to get up to my kids. We would end up coming home with 3 different dogs!!!! When we adopted our dog we have now, I was pregnant with my youngest and my older 2 were fighting over which dog to get. Plus, I don't want a lab or golden ret. We also don't want a little dog. My kids seem more afraid of little dogs. My husband and I don't want alittle dog, and everything I have read say that Bulldogs are great with kids.

American Bulldogs are WONDERFUL! Every one of them that have come through the doors at the vet I work at are so good. They have great, silly, yet very serious when needed personality.

Momof3, If you are going to adopt one I would go through a rescue for American Bulldogs. You do have young children you can never be too carefull, especially when adopting a animal you dont know. For the most part they are fun loving dogs, just as another person said..... gental giants! but they are rough players often not knowing thier own strength. As I said before if they are not raised with other dogs they most likely wont get along with them. This is why I say go consult a rescue, if you want to adopt. A rescue will be able to provide you with a dog that has been raised in a simmilar envirment as youres. If it was just you and the hubby I would say heck who cares they are great dogs, give it a try! but it isnt and you do have small children. We dont want to take chances no matter how big or small when it comes to any dog with a child. I am not just refering to dog aggression and bitting! I am also talking about the dangers of a large dog with a small child. Some large breeds are not suitable for small children, they can trample the child and some mouth play verry rough. Thus leading to unintentianal injury to the child!

I have an Am Bulldog and have had many "bully" breeds. I have 2 kids and my AM Bull is great with the kids. It depends on how you raise your dog. My pup knows she can get rough with daddy when she is playing but not with the kids. When my nephew comes over she sleeps at his feet and checks on him any time he makes a noise. If he starts to cry she will come and get me.

Honestly I have never owned an AMerican Bulldog. All though I have heard and read them to ne the "lazy mans" dog. Meaning which they really dont do anything. There are things that you need to take into consideration, they do have alot of health problems. One is their joints. They are rapid growers, and they do grow too fast for thier own good, causing joint problems, all though you wont be able to tell right away. 2nd different breeds have different skull shapes, bulldogs have the brachycephalic skull shape, because of thier short snouts, which makes them more prone to heat exhaustion. Sorry I am in school now and I also breed APBT. I like to know what certain breeds health problems are so that I can have a better understanding of what is going on.
