To loosing my mind, of course the kids arnt going to just help out! It is your responaibility to make them help. If you expect them to say..... geee mom id like to walk the dog: or I want to pick up his poop: then you really are loosing your mind! Animals are a responsibility all by them selfs. If you already have several children and cant handle the dog then for the dogs sake find him a new home. Kids need to be taught responsibility their not born with the knowalage. Please dont miss understand I am not getting on you ....I just think we as humans should think more before we take an animal in to our homes.

if you have a pool, or go camping near a lake or something, get a dog that likes to swim!the kids will be so exited thier doggy swims! if you want to take your pup to the mall or something, get a chihuahua, but most chihuahuas just want to sit there and be princes and princeses and dont wanna play, but u wont have to worry about your kids getting bit! but my best choice for you, is to go to a shelter, and get a lab, or a golden ret, or a collie! and to get the kids to help out. but i think the kids would very much rather have a cockatoo, they talk! but if your not goin for somethin expensive, get the dog, [soon the newness will ware off, and they wont be so interested in the dog, realize you most likely will be the primary caregiver of the dog] anyways tell them the second they stop takin care of the dog, shes goin right back to the shelter.and be serious. but hey look at the bright side! you will have a watchdoggy,. that will warn you when someone is coming to the door, by a nice little bark, and you will have a buddy to go jogging with, and you will have a great friend for life! personally, i think dogs are the best first time pets ever .

I can't believe all of you saying, tell your children they have to take care of the dog, or we're getting rid of it!!! DOGS HAVE FEELINGS and should only join the family AS PART OF THE FAMILY!!!! Dogs are NOT TOYS and should not be discarded like an outgrown ball glove or a pair of forgotten roller skates!!! SHAME ON ALL OF YOU WHO EVEN *THINK* ABOUT DOING SUCH A THING!

And Gloria, you should know the answer to your question before you even asked it... Children should be required to help with the family pet, but just as any other family chores or family matters, Mom is going to have to be the ultimate 'go ahead' person in this too! If you're not willing for that, then don't bring a pet into your family! It's like another kid... are you ready for that?!

Right now my 'girls' shih tzu's Tiki and Maddie are watching TV with my husband and playing ball and dancing during the commercials. Don't tell me that a dog, *any* dog, doesn't feel lonely, sad, betrayed and scared when he or she is 'given away' because 'the kids won't help with him'. How sad that anyone would even consider such an option!!!!

I think you should get the dog and make sure that the kids don't get bite.

We have a beautiful pomeranian mix puppy, her name is Bailey. We got her by accident, our friends bought a female dog from someone not knowing she was expecting. Two months later they found a litter of puppies on their bed. Bailey makes a wonderful addition to our family.

try dog sitting for a friend or Petsitters, Inc., first. Let the kids get the feel for the work involved.
