Our American Pit Bull Terrier has been on 3 antibiotics & 2 ear drop meds. in the last 4 mos. due to an ear infection and snotty nose. We went to a different vet Monday and he suspects food allergies and polins. She is now on two antibiotics, more ear drops & a veterinary diet, IVD Royal Canin Duck & Potato dog food. She seems to be improving but it is only the 3'rd day. Is this common to Pits?

Not in any I have owned. I have heard of a few that had sensitive diets. I don't think it a breed specific thing tho. Some of mine have been allergic to flea bites if bitten they lost hair in that spot.

Hi Tennesse,

I have a 11 month old APBT that has allergies, to what we are not sure but we suspect it is the food. I am on several pit bull forums and it seems to fairly common with this breed. The vet gave Buddha an allergy shot almost a month ago and said to wait to change food just incase the allergies were enviromental, however he is still losing his fur so we switched him to Natrual Balance Duck and Potato. I haven't seen an improvement YET because we just switched him 5 days ago. I can refer you to several pit bull specific groups if you would like. Just let me know. Good luck with your baby.

I have found many of the bully breed dogs have allergies to beef, try a food that contains no beef products. No I dont think its specific to just the one breed, allergies can be found in several other breeds as well!

Correct it is not breed specific, but it is common in APBT's. I have a lab/collie mix that also has allergies but it is allergic dermatitis. Two out of the four dogs I have are prone to hair loss and major itching so now my vet loves us lol j/k

An update on our APBT. Thank-you T-Rabbit, Lecia, & lindalu for your replies. The cultures taken from Rocko's ear & nose came back e-coli 4+. Poor thing! The vet suspects she is still allergic to pollins as do I by watching her day in & out & comparing her to my days. So I'll continue the chlora tabs 4 mil. daily. Her food allergy trial is not up yet. He sais it takes 5 weeks no treats no anything else while she's on the IVD Duck & Potato. He suspects she's been so miserable for so long the bacteria became a real systemic problem not to rule out she may have eaten another animals poop. He said there are different strains of e-coli & that it is a gut bacteria that we all carry. We did have horses but I forgot to ask him if that could be the culprit, the dogs always seem to go for that stuff, on top of the other things she already seemed to struggle with even before the horses. and she has eaten rabbits but doesn't care as much for mice. I deworm her every three months to keep the tape worms at bay also. She is still on antibiotics orally & in her ears, and I'm going to bathe her more often as we have tons of rabbits around here where she may be getting the fleas from. She's a whole lot better but I have this dread about those reoccuring ear infections. She's still snotty but not nearly as bad & has her red nose back! She hasn't had a hair loss problem yet. But red gums, and rash between her toes and belly which has cleared up for now. The best thing of all she's back to her energetic cute self & not lethargic any more. She was really sick, poor thing. By the way on American Pit Bulls, We absolutely adore this dog she is so smart , mild natured & beauitiful .She has been an absolute joy and very easy to train from the time she was a pup.

Your so very welcome! I'm glad she is fine and back to her self again. Keep us up to date on her improvement.
