You can go to a "select-a-pet" web site, they have an option where you enter different information, it selects breeds for you

I like pugs but sometimes they are costly to maintain being they are prone to medical issues the other alternative is a boston terrier same size as a pug and just as cute without so many medical issues

But if you get a Boston Terrier and are planning to breed them then you have a lot of issues with them. My daughter had two Boston Terriers and bred them. The female had four puppies. The first was born dead. The second was okay, the third was breech, and the fourth came out without the sack. So it died too. Since it was on the weekend. The vet where they live wouldn't open up and see the dog. And she passed away from infection the following monday. The one puppy lived. But they had to feed it with a syringe for 2 weeks then a bottle for two more. Every three hours. A fiest is a good hardy dog. Not as cute as a pug or Boston terrier. But the don't have a lot of problems either and they aren't as hyper. If you aren't going to have a lot of room, I'd pick a lazy dog. Or go to the pet shelter and see if they have a small dog already housebroken.

West Highland Terriers are a nice breed for kids too.
and they are very cute

and look at it this way. If you get a Pitbull, when your child gets older, I doubt your childrens friends parents will let them visit to play. Pitbulls are a very antisocial breed. Most of the people that own them are also antisocial.

Id really be amazed to see, if you put a dog breed book in front of a child, what breed would they choose?
Im going to do that with my daughter next time we go to the library.

Are you set on a dog? What about other animals?

T-rabbit said "DOG"

I wouldnt get a pet like a bird or a guinea pig for a baby,
its not responsible. The babies can really do some damage when they get a bit older and it could result in the child having a pet that they are not allowed to hold.

A dog is a good choice, please do some research on the West Highland Terrier. They are gorgeous dogs

Also....small caged animals and reptiles tend to walk in their faeces and because of this can carry salmonela. If your not very careful it can cause serious illness and can even result in limbs having to be removed.

Its not worth the hassel and the dangers, stick to dogs.
Cats can bad injuries too. Their bites are full of deadly bacteria.

Hiddy, she said a small breed, why the need to bring up pits?

T-rabbit ~ French Bulldogs are great! They are so kid friendly! Pugs have respiratory problems, so unless you are up to the task of dealing with a potentially sick dog, I would advise against a Pug. Havanese are also very sweet, but hairy. I've had good experience with Yorkies as well. Beagles are good, but a HANDFULL! For my money, I'd get a Frenchie! They are so cute and sweet! My friend has three and they are just the sweetest! And they are pretty smart and easily trained!

Good luck!

Pugs, bulldogs, and other breeds are in the same class of having respiratory problems. They all have brachycephalic skull shapes which meaning they have short snouts and are more prone to heat exhaustion, not only in the summer but year round. There are only 3 different skull shapes that different breeds fit into.
No matter what, different breeds have different health problems.

Dear T-Rabbit

Why would you want 4 dogs? Unless your a breeder, thats ludicrous.

By the way.....Go pug yourself
