And which kind are in /out? Lately I've been considering getting one but don't know if i would be better off going with a body perm or a spiral. Haven't spirals been out for a long time though or not necessarily?

DON"T DO IT!!!! lol. After I had my youngest I thought "I'll get a perm and then my hair will look cute all day and I really won't have to do anything to it" Didn't happen. I looked like a poodle on crack. A few weeks ago I bought one of those straightning kits at walmart and straightened my hair.

to be honest the last time I had a perm I was 14 and my moms best friend did it at home...can you say frizz ball....anyways I am sure things are different these days. I think lots of curls are in, I know I always think really curly hair looks so funky!

I think that you should go with your natural hair it suits you!

My daughter doesn't have a perm but she uses this techinique that makes it look like she does. She buys this special mouse that is for curl enhancing. She puts a lot on and twirls pieces of her hair and then dries it with a blowdryer using a diffuser. It looks really good.

My hair is to the middle of my back and it is straight and flat all over except for like the last 3 inches is curly. I haven't had a perm in many many years but I'm just getting bored with being so flat. It just seems lifeless because it has no volume and so I thought a perm would take care of that! Also I've worn my hair in a ponytail since I was 20,(I'm 35 now),and I just feel like I need a change and am not sure what to do to it. I have colored it recently but I'm still not happy with it ,it's too flat.

Have you ever noticed it seems like people with straight hair want curly and people with curly want straight?

Have you thought about a different cut maybe some layers!

Yeah i know i have dead straight hair and i would love curly hair. But i had a perm when i was sixteen that went wrong so i dont want to risk it.

Lizzi, My daughter's hair is very straight. You will be amazed at what curl enhancing products and a diffuser can do!

I don't know,i like my lenght o.k.,I just need volume and I thought a perm would be a good way to get it.

Try Garnier Fructis style curl contruct mousse-extra strong. When your hair is wet, apply it and twirl strands till you get it how you want it to look. Let it air dry or blow dry with a diffuser. It will look like you have a spirl perm.

Yeah when i was a teen my moms friend permed my hair and I absolutely hated it and when we got home I stood in front of the mirror trying to brush it out but all that did was make it much worse!

My aunt is a hair dresser so i could ask her if you like?
But you could always keep the length and have lots of layers cut into it.
That will make a difference.

Thanks luckey,I will try that and see how I like it!

the food news lizzi is since you hair is long you won't get the poodle effect of perming. Sprial is just a way the long hair HAS to be rolled don't ever let anyone tell you differend or you will get a very bad look. Sprials do not look different them reg perms it is just a hair length thing. A bady wave will not work because you hair is to long you will just loose the curl and will have damaged your hari for nothing. Have the stylest use straight rods (not concave) that are about the size of a thick thumb. You will get nice natural looking curls. have her add some layers for bounce. I don't really think that perms are never really "in or out" but you have to have it look like naturally curly hair or it will just look bad. Also make sure tha tyou use the right products so the you get the best look there is nothing worse then a frizzy perm

That's true simmonds-amanda,if I layered it but still kept the bottom the longest then that alone is bound to give me some volume right? Because it wouldn't be as weighted down from being layered and I'd still have the length because I'd still have the longest bottom layer in back.

It's hard to decide what to do when you've worn your hair the same way for so long. I wish I could go to a good stylist, the kind who can just take one look at you and know what will look good on you and just do it.

Kind of like they do on those make-over shows!

Well, when I was younger, I used to get spiral perms but now that I've had a few kids, the sprial curls come natural. The thing that really sucks with my hair is the humidity. The minute I step out the door, it looks like I stuck my finger in a light socket. It takes me about an hour to straighten my hair which I like to do for a different look but it's a real pain in the butt because I have so much hair. Some days my hubby calls me lion head. Ha, he's just jealous because he don't have much hair.

no stay away form those people they will cut all of your hair of and then you will hate it. never do that unless you are very willing to have major change. They have programs at some places that take your photo and put differend hair styles on it so you can see what you would look like

I never got a spiral perm before but I always thought they were pretty. My perms were always body or just regular curls.

Do you think stylists should cut first and then perm or perm first then cut?

Name: tweetybird4 | Date: Nov 9th, 2006 4:11 PM
I think they should perm first then cut so they can get the split ends off. Heck, I don't know, perhaps it depends on the stylist. I'ved always had the cut after the color or perm. Sprial perms are cool, I guess it just depends on what your looking for. My hair is pretty long and there are so many days, all I do is pull it up. It gets old.

Name: simmonds-amanda | Date: Nov 9th, 2006 4:13 PM
I think cut first as they will be cutting the perm away if you have it cut after!

Name: Lizzi | Date: Nov 9th, 2006 4:13 PM
I think you're right tweety, perm first then cut but alot of them don't do it that way and then your hair ends up being almost too short!

Name: tweetybird4 | Date: Nov 9th, 2006 4:15 PM
I tell them just a wee bit, I only want it trimmed, not butched.

Name: jillw | Date: Nov 9th, 2006 4:15 PM
chemicals then the cut always. you never know how much at the ends are going to look nasty after the chemical is applies or how much it will shrink so a 2" trim can look like a 5" cut after the curl is added
