That you've elected a Muslim as President of the United States?

Doesn't anybody find that strange and rather ironic?

I wouldn't find it ironic at all if it was indeed the case. He was raised in a muslim household as a child but is nut practicing. He has joined a christian church and practices as he pleases. I personally wouldn't care either way but there have been many issues here over his supposed connection to many things based purely on his father being a radical and his step father not being much better. I personally did not vote for either of the front runners and I am not sure that I would have been happy with any of the five choices that were given me on the ballot but I am thankful for a representative democracy and it he doesnt work out then we get the chance to get rid of him in 4 years as long as we are not involved in a war that allows him to cancel elections.

I mean seriously people are so up in arms here about muslim people but I wonder if they think about what people think about Americans ( religion not important) We don't just commit terrorist attacks we start wars. We are like the big bully of the world and we do things with out the backing of countries that we have allied our selves with.

Seriously get over the religion aspect, why don't you guys do some research and better understand him! go read a book about him! Like M25 said on the DD board Would it be better if he was Catholic or Jewish or a Pagan, how about Amish???

His race or religion has NOTHING to do with what a great and wonderful man he is and all the wonderful things he is going to do for our country after he fixes all the Messes that bush lift behind!

Why are so many people caught on on things that he is not! that's how he was raised, we don't choose how we are raised but once we are old enough to make our own decisions we do! That is why he is now Christian!

I think the main thing to focus on is that Obama is NOT half retarded like the current president is...who was voted in twice...for reasons that will never be understood by myself...

It was really nice listening to a speech without any made up words or infantile giggles at inappropriate times.

I think good things are going to happen.

to say he's muslim i think isn't quite accurate....from what i understand he wasn't raised with much religion AT ALL...and didn't become interested until he was in his adult years when he had himself baptized.

i think it was his birth father who was "raised" as a muslim but ultimately was atheist. and his father i don't think was around much. i read somewhere his father left when obama was two years old, and only saw him once between the time he left and the time he died when obama was in his early 20's.

i also remember people saying he was put in one of those radical muslim schools as a kid or something, but that turned out to be completely false.

but honestly...does it really matter whether he is or was or isn't? just because theres a bunch of radicals out there doesn't mean all muslims are bad...

i find your comment quite discriminating.

how can you say that people need to forget the religious aspects when this entire country is based on religion?! the whole reason america even came to be was so people would be free to practice christianity . so to think that you can consider choosing a president without taking his beliefs into consideration is totally ridiculous. and why should some vote for someone that doesn't come close to believing in the same things they do?

Its called separation of church and state!

Like I said before,

His race or religion has NOTHING to do with what a great and wonderful man he is and all the wonderful things he is going to do for our country after he fixes all the Messes that bush lift behind!

He is just as much white as he is black!

Here you go!!

Early Years

Barack Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4th, 1961. His father, Barack Obama Sr., was born and raised in a small village in Kenya, where he grew up herding goats with his own father, who was a domestic servant to the British.

Barack's mother, Ann Dunham, grew up in small-town Kansas. Her father worked on oil rigs during the Depression, and then signed up for World War II after Pearl Harbor, where he marched across Europe in Patton's army. Her mother went to work on a bomber assembly line, and after the war, they studied on the G.I. Bill, bought a house through the Federal Housing Program, and moved west to Hawaii.

It was there, at the University of Hawaii, where Barack's parents met. His mother was a student there, and his father had won a scholarship that allowed him to leave Kenya and pursue his dreams in America.

Barack's father eventually returned to Kenya, and Barack grew up with his mother in Hawaii, and for a few years in Indonesia. Later, he moved to New York, where he graduated from Columbia University in 1983.

The College Years

Remembering the values of empathy and service that his mother taught him, Barack put law school and corporate life on hold after college and moved to Chicago in 1985, where he became a community organizer with a church-based group seeking to improve living conditions in poor neighborhoods plagued with crime and high unemployment.

The group had some success, but Barack had come to realize that in order to truly improve the lives of people in that community and other communities, it would take not just a change at the local level, but a change in our laws and in our politics.

He went on to earn his law degree from Harvard in 1991, where he became the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. Soon after, he returned to Chicago to practice as a civil rights lawyer and teach constitutional law. Finally, his advocacy work led him to run for the Illinois State Senate, where he served for eight years. In 2004, he became the third African American since Reconstruction to be elected to the U.S. Senate.

Political Career

It has been the rich and varied experiences of Barack Obama's life - growing up in different places with people who had differing ideas - that have animated his political journey. Amid the partisanship and bickering of today's public debate, he still believes in the ability to unite people around a politics of purpose - a politics that puts solving the challenges of everyday Americans ahead of partisan calculation and political gain.

In the Illinois State Senate, this meant working with both Democrats and Republicans to help working families get ahead by creating programs like the state Earned Income Tax Credit, which in three years provided over $100 million in tax cuts to families across the state. He also pushed through an expansion of early childhood education, and after a number of inmates on death row were found innocent, Senator Obama worked with law enforcement officials to require the videotaping of interrogations and confessions in all capital cases.

In the U.S. Senate, he has focused on tackling the challenges of a globalized, 21st century world with fresh thinking and a politics that no longer settles for the lowest common denominator. His first law was passed with Republican Tom Coburn, a measure to rebuild trust in government by allowing every American to go online and see how and where every dime of their tax dollars is spent. He has also been the lead voice in championing ethics reform that would root out Jack Abramoff-style corruption in Congress.

As a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Senator Obama has fought to help Illinois veterans get the disability pay they were promised, while working to prepare the VA for the return of the thousands of veterans who will need care after Iraq and Afghanistan. Recognizing the terrorist threat posed by weapons of mass destruction, he traveled to Russia with Republican Dick Lugar to begin a new generation of non-proliferation efforts designed to find and secure deadly weapons around the world. And knowing the threat we face to our economy and our security from America's addiction to oil, he's working to bring auto companies, unions, farmers, businesses and politicians of both parties together to promote the greater use of alternative fuels and higher fuel standards in our cars.

Whether it's the poverty exposed by Katrina, the genocide in Darfur, or the role of faith in our politics, Barack Obama continues to speak out on the issues that will define America in the 21st century. But above all his accomplishments and experiences, he is most proud and grateful for his family. His wife, Michelle, and his two daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, live on Chicago's South Side.

Our country was not founded to allow people to practice Christianity. I twas founded to give freedoms that were denied in other places. Yes freedom of religion was one of those things but not the only one and it was not just christianity. We have checks and balances and seperation of church and state to keep people from becoming to powerful for the wrong reasons. I really think that a history lesson might be in the best interest of some people in this nation. We came here and destroyed the way of life of the then current inhabitants then when we finally got a government together it was only decided by two votes that we would speak English and German. There were some in the government at that time that said we should start a revolution every so often and clean out the government but people are becoming to brainwashed to stand up for what they believe and they are no longer able to make the government accountable.
I wish that my vote would have gone to the winner but it did not. I did not vote for either front runner because I did not care for either due to their views on certain things that would change my life. I did not care that one was old and one was black. Personally the only time I see either one is on the computer and then I barely notice.
I wish that as a country we could accept that this is the way our representative democracy works and that we may not like the outcome but at least we have the freedom to vote and have our voices heard. Remember that we will not get what we want all the time but we do get it some of the time. Also if it is so terrible that the majority gets the choice here then join the Gov and try to change things about who is allowed to run or anything else you dont like for that matter. You have the freedom to try to change things here so stop complaining and do something about it.

Coartney,
I just want to say.... the terrorist neighbor that Obama had relations with, he was a child. That was one of the republican party's ploy to get people to question him and our safety as Americans. What the republicans neglected to mention is that Obama was only a kid when he knew that person.

Now about him being raised as a Muslim he was raised a christian not with the Muslim belief. Also I Muslim is a religion practice just like any other religion. There are Muslim Jews, Muslim Arabs and so on. Just for sake of argument... lets say he is Muslim, whats wrong with being Muslim? Not all people that practice that religion are terrorists.

Please understand when I say you seem to be angry, I am wondering if you are looking for a debate? I only mentioned it because your post is written in a confrontational manner where being most people who read it will interpit it as such. Thus causing them to reply in a unpleasant way.

Trust me I don't think the McCain people are jealous of Obama win, However.. I do think they are extremely disappointed. I also think most of the people who are disappointed and or worried about Obama leading this country have received their info from misleading / misinformed sources.

Name: lindalu | Date: Nov 7th, 2008 7:33 AM
I would also like to say...I am sorry to all you people who so wanted McCain to be the next president. I know if Obama didn't win I would be just as disappointed, probably would be in tears still! Most of all I would like to say there isn't any thing that can be done to change the election turn out, obviously more then half of the Americans felt Obama would be best to run this country.

Finally I would like to conclude...We are all Americans having to reside under the same flag, cant we except what is? Can we put behind all the negative media... try to look to the positive side rather then pondering on the negative?

Oops... big mistake! didn't mean to say Muslim Jews. Muslim and Jewish are not in any way connected. In fact they cant stand each other.

I can't believe you'd lose friends over politics. I don't know if people know much about the Troubles in Northern Ireland but despite everything, Mark (my fiancé) is a Protestant Unionist and I am a Catholic Republican. We vote for different parties, Mark drops Joey and I off to Mass (although he doesn't attend Church) His family have disowned him for being with a Catholic Republica, but sack that. We really don't care. Politics is not worth losing friends over.

We have been at war with many types of people since our young country has been around but many of them are now our allies and we would never say anything about electing a person who was raised in Europe even though that is where many of our ancestors came from. We don't say look this person was raised in a family that at some point was accused of practicing witch craft. We just don't do it and I am still at a loss for why electing a person who has had Muslim involvement is any different than electing any other person. Yes currently America is engaging in warfare with countries that have Muslim people in them but what about when we were at war for our freedom? Should we not also not elect people from southern states because we were once at war with them?

Once again I guess you didnt read the facts because you listened to want came out of sarah palins mouth

here are some facts

LIE
:
"My view is that the community organizer was really a sham event. Bill Ayers was testing him."(Andy Martin, Hannity's America, October 5, 2008, "Obama and His Friends: History of Radicalism")
TRUTH: Bill Ayers had nothing to do with Obama's community organizing job. It's pure lunacy to imagine that Ayers was "testing" Obama.

LIE: Obama's "community organizing is a grand scheme perpetuated by none other than William Ayers."(Sean Hannity, Hannity's America, October 5, 2008, "Obama and His Friends: History of Radicalism")
TRUTH: Obama's community organizing was not a vast conspiracy for revolution devised by Bill Ayers.

LIE: "They live half a mile from William Ayers, the unrepentant terrorist" and "Just a half a mile from those homes is Louis Farrakhan."(Hannity's America, October 5, 2008, "Obama and His Friends: History of Radicalism")
TRUTH: It's true, of course, that Obama lives in this same neighborhood, as do tens of thousands of other people who presumably are also guilty by geographical association. The logic of this argument would be, if you live half a mile from a sex offender, then you agree with child molesters.

Its sad that you had to lose a friend over this, because really i guess that person wasn't a great friend and politics shouldn't have to come in the way of that!

I remember during our election I sta ted that I do not understand why some people do not want to share their politial views..........well during and after this Usa election, I can now understand.

Name: lindalu | Date: Nov 7th, 2008 4:49 PM
Winn.
Most elections are not this heated, this one was so heated due to the fact that an African American was on the ballet. Many people didn't want Obama to win for the simple reason reason. Most would never admit it in fear that they would be called what they are.... a racist! I'm not insinuating this is the case here, but it is in many areas of America.

I myself have family members that are racist saying they would never vote for a n****r. Now that hes won they are saying hes a Muslim terrorist.

Name: bmes | Date: Nov 7th, 2008 4:51 PM
lol winn...maybe it's just different here. lol...

i know when I talk to my friends about politics we never have argued about it.

the only frustrating thing is talking to my dad about politics....especially US politics. he also gets sucked into the gossip and propaganda and conspiracy theories that are constantly all over the place and he takes it as the TRUTH and a FACT!!!! so when he starts i just sit there and nod my head...ha ha

you can tell right away which people you can talk to about it ro which ones to stay clear from...lol...but, funny thing is, hubby and I can talk about politics even if we don't agree we don't argue about it. but look out!!! if my dad and hubby disagree on something it an all night long debate!!! lol...especially with booze involved!! ha ha...

but other than my dad and hubby who argue (mostly when they are drinking together..lol), i've never come across anyone else that argues so much about politics. holy man...could you imagine what would happen if a few of these girls from babycrowd all got together in one room to talk about politics????? LOOK OUT BUSH!!!! FORGET ABOUT WAR IN IRAQ!!!THERE'S A BABYCROWD WAR....THIS COULD BE 10X MORE LETHAL THAN ANYTHING YOU'VE EVER SEEN!!!
LMAO!!!!

Name: lindalu | Date: Nov 7th, 2008 5:19 PM
Bmes,
I know! I cant even count the number of people that have quoted some crazy rumor that was far from true. In the kindest way I correct them, and they get pissed. I just throw my hands up and say ....oh well! My point for this is, some base their opinions around false stamens that have come from false media.

It makes me crazy, Grrrrrrrrr!

Name: winnmom | Date: Nov 7th, 2008 5:30 PM
hmmm maybe I will give my opinion......because most everyone here knows where i stand anyways.......
I woulod not have voted for Obama.......NOT because of the colour of his skin.....( I think it is rediculas for anyone to vote based on skin colour!!!!!) not for any religion he may or may not follow........but for these reasons.....
I will not vote democratic.......I will not place a vote for someone who pro choice on abortions( I feel abortions should ONLY be for medical reasons, rape etc..not birth control) and I can not ever vote for someone , who mocks the bible...and then claims to be Christian.....whether meaning in a joke or not...........
that being said........I am not saying I would not vote for someone based on there religion.......but stating christianity and then mocking the bible, I can not go for......

I also want to state........that this election is now done.......everyone has a right to vote as they please........and the people have elected Obama...........and I do hope that Obama as president does bring the changes Americans want! I do hope he is a good leader for America!

Bmes, the only person I argue politics wih is my Dad...lol.....because he does believe everything he hears!!!!! and I always have to correct him.........and this year paid of....lol...he has NEVER voted conservative........and this year with our Many many many politcal talks, he now sees WHY I do vote conservative, and has changed they way he too now votes! wooo hooo....lol.......not that changing his vote was my goal.... no!!!!!.......but for him to look at the FACTS.........

Name: lindalu | Date: Nov 7th, 2008 5:47 PM
Winn you know I respect your views on this, but I would like to point out that Obama is not pro abortion. He himself stated during the last presidential debate that he doesn't support abortion... that it should only be used for reasons such as you have stated. You and he have the same thought on the abortion topic.

Name: winnmom | Date: Nov 7th, 2008 5:56 PM
Lindalu I did not know that........thank-you.I thought he was pro choice.........will have to look more into that,........thanks

Name: winnmom | Date: Nov 7th, 2008 6:11 PM
lindalu am sorry but from what I have read in the past........and what I am trying to find now, he sounds pro choice.........

I will look more into it later......

Name: lindalu | Date: Nov 7th, 2008 6:16 PM
Winn he feels that if a woman's health is at risk they should have the choice to terminate the pregnancy. So I guess technically it is pro choice. There are many people who are so against abortion that they would trade their own life for the life of their unborn child, to me that is an anti abortionist. By definition if one aborts or feels its ok to do so for any reason, then they are pro abortion. There is no gray area with abortion either one is for it or against it.

Name: lindalu | Date: Nov 7th, 2008 6:28 PM
Either way I feel that him being for abortion has no bearing on his ability to run the country. Should I have an abortion or should I not have one is a question that always goes back to religious believes.

Conservative/Liberals they are both based on personal opinions. Myself and millions of other Americans feel they do not belong on the same page.

Name: winnmom | Date: Nov 7th, 2008 8:33 PM
I agree with that Lindalu...........
this is just a personal opinion of mine...........
Like I stated, I do hope that he brings the changes America so wants and needs!

I respect your opinion Lindalu, and do so enjoy our discussions, even though w have diffrent opinions, that we can chat with out all the garbage that can come with it is great!

Name: winnmom | Date: Nov 7th, 2008 8:34 PM
ooops, agree with the fact that it has no bearing on his ability to run a country.........
