My cat Darcey has been gone 2 days. I last saw her on Thursday 11th, and haven't seen her since ...

She usually comes when called, and any time she doesn't come when called, she always shows up within an hour or two of my calling. The longests shes been gone is 5 hours.

She's tagged microchipped and spayed, and is very used to the outdoors.

But I'm concerned. I've driven around searching the roads, asking people if they've seen her, calling and calling and calling. I've phoned round veterinary surgeries, told her insurance company who, and I've begun to advertise online ...

Anyone else's cat gone missing? What happened? Only my first cat Sasha has never gone missing in the 6 years I've had her, and Darcey has never gone missing in her 2 years before ...

I'm sorry to hear that.Keep hope its only been a couple days she may still show up. I did mention in another post that I had a 18 year old cat that went missing. He went out his flap one night and never returned. I have no clue what happened to him.

Thanks Lindalu, its been 3 days and she's still gone. My stupid veterinary surgery had forgotten to register her microchip, which I only found out this morning, even though she was microchipped 2 years ago. Grr. Doing everything I can to find her

Any luck with finding your cat?

Name: Joeys_Mam | Date: Sep 15th, 2008 10:26 PM
No. I've been doing everything I can to find her. I put up loads of flyer, got them all printed out (cost a fortune) and out in the pouring rain putting them up, and now today I see most of them have been tugged down by some evil people who have no lives. At this rate, I'll never find her. :(

But thanks for asking. :)

Do you have food and water outside? She might be closer than you think... I'm sorry about that... Just think that someone may have taken her in and is loving her....

To be honest, I'd rather not think that. She's my cat. Noone has the right to just steal her. She was wearing a collar with a nametag and is microchipped. There are posters up everywhere. You can't miss them. So if I found out someone has stolen my cat, I'd take them straight to court, cause finding her is costing me time, money and effort.

We think she's just lost. Hopefully we'll get her back.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but I really don't see how it could be of comfort to me to assume that someone has deliberately put me and my fiancé through all this, out to 1am every morning searching, costing a fortune printing out flyers, out in the pouring rain putting them up. Not to mention the fact that I love my cat. She's mine. Noone has the right to just decide they'll have her. It's theft.

Name: Joeys_Mam | Date: Sep 18th, 2008 5:19 PM
The reason that irritates me so much is because someone I wonder if some horrible individual out there has done exactly that, has stolen my cats, sees me and my fiancé out till the early hours of the morning calling for her, sees the flyers we've put up everywhere, has taken her collar off, won't take her to the vet so she can't be scanned for her microchip. If I found the person who has done this, I swear to God, I wouldn't be responsible for my actions. GRRR :)

But yeah, we have food and water out for her all the time, and thanks, I know you meant well. It's just so many people have been saying that to me, but my pets are my babies, and they're mine, and noone has the right to steal them. The way I see it is if you find a cat, you should try to find the owners before taking the cat as your own, and because Darcey is both tagged and microchipped, it'd be easy to find me. But yeah I know you meant well. It's just its been a week now, and I miss the cat, and would hate to think someone has taken her from me when she could so easily be returned to me. That's all. x

Oh dear.... I simply meant that they found a cat, who may have lost her collar, and took her in to take care of her.... Not that someone deliberately stole your beloved pet. Is there anyway to tell that an animal has been microchipped other than on the collar.... If I found a stray, uncollared malnourished and obviously lost cat in my yard I would feed it and love it and care for it....

Cats often lose their collars especially if they are lost. You should never simply take an animal as your own and assume it's a stray because essentially it's irresponsible to do that without checking first if it has owners. Putting flyers up, advertising in vets, or at least taking it to the vet to see if it has a microchip.

The only way to see if an animal is microchipped is by taking it to the vets and having them run a scanner over it, which will give the details of the cat's owners. It's simple and free and takes about 1 minute to do.

If you took an animal as your own without checking to see if it is owned first that is stealing. Because it may simply be a lost cat, with loving owners who are heartbroken and missing their pet. You should always take it to the vet to see if it is microchipped first.

I found a cat about 6 months ago, which was without a collar and starving, I took it in, fed it, and the next day took it to the vets, where it was confirmed that it was microchipped and the vets quickly got the details of the cat's owners and they were reunited by the afternoon.

How cruel would I have been to have simply kept that cat as my own. How unfair would that be. The owners were in tears being reunited. They had missed their cat terribly. I did the right thing. Sadly, there are people out there who don't do the right thing.

Bebe, if someone takes a cat in and doesn't check to see if the cat is owned first and still keeps it as their own, that is stealing ... If the animal has been microchipped and you go to registered a 'missing cat' at the vets, and they scan it and find out its owned and missing, you could face charges of theft. I have already been on the phone to my vet who will be checking every adult cat who is registered. All I'm saying is just because a cat is lost, doesn't mean you can take it as your own. You should always check first.

Anyway Bebe, I'm not going to debate over this. It's just common sense and human decency to check that an animal doesn't have heartbroken owners who are missing their pet before taking it as your own. 'Finders keepers' is a childs game, which should never apply in the adult world in my opinion.

If you don't agree with me, then we can simply agree to disagree although I am quite frankly amazed that you would simply home an animal which probably has got owners already who could be traced by a simple visit to the vet or by putting up a few flyers. To do this is cruel, because for some people, their pets are their babies.

I'm off to look for Darcey now. Take care. Please just agree to disagree. I have enough to think of with Darcey missing.

Whilst I understand it may be reassuring to think someone is caring for your cat........I know I'd prefer to think that then it's out in the rain we've had recently.....

It can also be incredibly nerve wracking im sure. I havent been in your shoes..........but i can imagine how you're feeling...a pet is a part of the family....I'd be lost without a pet.

I have my stepmothers cat. I dont think much of cats really....but have grown fond of Ozzy! She's great company in the evenings and very affectionate...........if she disappeared without explanation I would be very worried.

So i hope you find her soon.........

Your fliers, do they have details of the reward? If someone DOES have Darcy...it'll be an incentive to return her.

Name: Nicolaaa | Date: Sep 18th, 2008 10:00 PM
But like Gill...I would hate to think that someone had just taken my pet as their own...........

Some pets are easy to reunite with owners, especially (if liek Gill has) they have done all the right stuff like microchipping etc........

so every effort should be made to reunite them.

Name: Joeys_Mam | Date: Sep 18th, 2008 10:03 PM
Well yes, but only if those people are decent people who will take her to the vet to check her for a microchip or look out for my flyers and return her to me. I'm her owner after all. And she would rather be with me than anyone else. She was very close to me, and is just lost is all. And yeah my flyers have a reward and they're absolutely everywhere.

I am so soory to hear this.....I know how hard it is, stressful and full of worry......

Yes My cat went missing a few times.....each time, was loss of sleep, going around putting up fliers, phoning the spca, vets etc.....worried sick.....and when he came up $$$ in vet bills......the last time my cat went missing,he was gone 3 WEEKS!!! came home very sick, very scared and timid, unhealthy .......needed lots of care and $$ vet........this is why I choose to have him then become an indoor cat........( not starting up the indoor out door debate again).......I was not sure weather to respond or not.....but yo asked if anyone had a cat go missing and I have, and I know how hard it is!!!! I hope you find your pet soon......keep us updated!

Name: Joeys_Mam | Date: Sep 18th, 2008 11:12 PM
Winnmom, don't worry out it. It's encouraging to hear your cat returned. Maybe mine will too. It won't make me change my mind about the outdoor cat rule I have. :) Although if and when she returns, I'll be bringing her in for a few weeks. But I suppose it does give me a better understanding of why you made the decision you did. But still, maybe she'll come home. :( Thanks again

Name: lindalu | Date: Sep 19th, 2008 4:21 AM
Sorry to hear that she hasn't returned. Unfortunately it doesn't look very promising. I don't say this to diminish any hope of her returning. I say it because its not typical that a cat will get lost, especially if he/she has been altered. An altered cat will not wonder far from home they usually stay near. I do hope that she hasn't gotten hurt or stolen. I did once have my cat come up missing for 12 weeks I thought he was gone for ever. I imagined he had gotten killed by a car or by a cruel person. Then one day there he was in the back yard, he was unable to walk straight and he was very thin. I took him to the vet it turned out that he developed a problem with his equilibrium causing him to wander for weeks. So I would have to say don't give up hope even if it does appear glum.

Gosh almighty.... Sorry I offended you really.... I hope you find your kitty soon... and I hope that someone has had the sense to at least give her food and water while they searched for the rightful owners.... Geez... that is all I was trying to say..

Name: Joeys_Mam | Date: Sep 19th, 2008 4:45 PM
Lindalu, no worries. I know it looks bleak. But she is microchipped so there's always hope ... I'll keep searching. :)

Name: bmes | Date: Sep 19th, 2008 8:46 PM
well i know it might be a little too late for this technique, but when our cat got out....mind you, our cat is an indoor cat....but we didn't close the door properly one evening and she snuck out....we were looking for her for HOURS....then finally when we stopped looking, and we left our back door wide open, she walked back into the house about 5 minutes later...lol....maybe something to try out the next time if something like that happens....but your cat comes and goes whenever you want so i don't know....

did you go door to door asking if anyone recently picked up a cat?

i thought you mentioned before that you just found out her microchip wasn't activated...maybe someone DID try to find the owner with the microchip at the time it wasn't activated? sorry...not sure how that thing works, but it's a thought...

hope you find your cat.... :-(

Name: bmes | Date: Sep 19th, 2008 8:50 PM
oh and have you put an ad in your local newspaper? i see that all the time in our classifieds...people looking for lost pets, or jewelllery etc....

Name: Joeys_Mam | Date: Sep 19th, 2008 9:46 PM
Bmes, tried all that and more. But thanks for the advice anyway. Yes that's what pissed me off about the microchip, that perhaps she had been scanned, but I have been in touch with every vet and recue centre in Belfast (which are the only places with the scanners) and none of them have scanned a tabby or even had a tabby in in the last week. So I don't think so. I really don't think she's around. I think she's lost. Because she's used to being in the outdoors, she'll be good at hunting and used to the elements. So I think she can take care of herself for a while anyway, hopefully at least until she find her. Thanks for the message of support.

Name: Joeys_Mam | Date: Sep 19th, 2008 9:50 PM
The microchip works by if you run a scanner over the cat it will beep and a number will come up on the scanner. Then the vet or whoever rings the microchip company with that number, and they provide the name, address and phone number of the owners. The problem had been that Darcey's number had not been registered with the microchip company. So it would have just given a number which wasn't connected to my name. But I got it sorted now. My stupid vets.

Has your cat shown up yet?

Name: Joeys_Mam | Date: Sep 23rd, 2008 6:03 PM
No she hasn't. Still searching. :( At this rate, I think someone has taken her inside their house and won't let her out.

Thanks for your concern. :)

Name: lindalu | Date: Sep 24th, 2008 3:52 PM
I'm sorry, I know how it feels to have a pet go missing. Just keep the hope, you never know she may still show up.

Name: Lizzi | Date: Sep 24th, 2008 5:55 PM
No offense here but you have to know that each time you let your cat out there is always the possibility that you may never see it again. That's why my "girls" are strictly indoor.I have never understood why so many people have let their beloved cats roam outside. It's just too risky and dangerous.

Name: bmes | Date: Sep 24th, 2008 7:05 PM
ooooooohhhhh lizzi....we aren't going there again!!! ha ha....i don't think you around for that, but we recently had a big debate in here about indoor vs. outdoor cats....where joeys_mam is from most of the majority of cats there are outdoor cats. the dangers that we have here are not the same as where she's from... they don't have all that wildlife and disease that is rampant in the US and even in Canada....also, cats can live just as long there as an indoor cat does here....in the UK they consider it cruel to leave your cats indoors. what happened to her cat is most likely more of a fluke than anything.

lol....yeah...anyways....try and find that post...it wasn't too long ago.
