I have used wall anchors with closet pole sockets.
The wall anchors come in plastic or metal & are perfect for weight bearing in plain sheet rock.
The closet pole sockets come in wood or plastic, one peice is a complete circle the sticks out [ 1 inch. And the other piece is C shaped so you can slide a rod in.

Good luck.

Try the plastic drywall anchors that screw in and hold 50lbs. The ones I am thinking of are made by E-Z Ancor. They make a metal type also, but personally I have found the plastic ones work better for me. I have done quite of bit of work with similar problems.
You can see what kind of anchors I'm talking about at this website.
