today at 11.30..i get a phone call from my kids school and they tell me that my 5yo daughter had an accident in the schoolyard and had hit her head and they think she has concussion...she is crying, has blurred vision with a headache and has thrown up once!
We rush to the school and pick her up...she is very quite and wants to sleep...we then take her straight to the emergency ward where we stay until they give the all clear....they watch for up to 4 hours after the incident. we were at the hospital for only 2 and half hours ...because we found out that the incident took place one hour before we were contacted?!?!?!

my question to the school was.....why did you wait so long and why didnt you at least give her panadol???
why on earth wasnt an ambulance called???

answers....it was a delayed reaction....she only had the symptoms later and we rang you immediately.
panadol cannot be administed...we can not give the stuff without a signed medication plan by your doctor or consent signed at the time by a parent :-| what the hell....how many parents go to pick up their sick kids and say...oh wait give me a form and i'll sign shit so you can give me some panadol before i take my kid home....or preplan a doctors letter.

and finally about the ambulance...we have staff trained in first aid and it was ascertained that it wasnt life threatening.......yet all write-ups in regards to concussion are considered an emergency?!?! and life threatening
besides that if the staff are trained in first aid and can ascertain whether or not some one is in a life threatening way or not....WHY THE HELL CANT THEY GIVE PANADOL TO A KID WITH A HEADACHE?????

just thought id have a bleat about the whole health procedures!!!!!!!!!!!!

main thing is ....she is home well and being pampered :-)))

Marija....wow

I hope she is going to be okay .... That would make me SO irrate.... Yes if she hit her head that hard, crying, blurred vision ?!?! Straight to the hospital...

Id be REALLY upset about this. With ANY head injury if the child has ANY of those symptoms the ambulance should be called right away...

Unbelievable!

Marija- When my son was in daycare they had similar procedures regarding every medication, ever diaper rash cream, I had to fill out a form for everything he was taking or may need so I just filled out one for everything "just to be safe" I was thinking uhm if a baby is hurting why wait for me to leave work and come sign a form for him to have diaper cream or Tylenol (pandolol). They said it was a liability thing that if the child recieved too much or whatever they did not want to be held accountable, that is why I had to sign saying he could have whatever. Not that I minded I would rather come see for myself he is OK than take someone elses word for it.

But I agree the school should have called you immediatly and let you know what happened and let YOU decide what should be done not wait an hour later.

i rang them just before and told them that im going to fill all those forms out for all my kids....i then got told that i had to go and buy all separate measuring cups and a separate bottle or packet of panadol with each child....AND GET A DOCTORS FORM STATING THAT THEY HAVE BEEN PRESCRIBED PANADOL BEFORE FROM THE DOCTOR AND HAVE NOT HAD A REACTION TO IT!!!!!!!!......next theyll be asking us to bottle our blood and leave it at reception!!!!!
i am pissed ...all this crap so they can have a over the counter medication panadol / tylenol......yet they can determine, AFTER ALL THE SYMPTOMS HAVE OCCURRED...that it is NOT life threatening...when she clearly is concussed!!!!!!!

Here the school systems wont give your child any kind of medication unless it is prescribed from his/her doctor. Not even an asprine!

well ya know i recall ooooooh so many years ago as a flight attendant.....even if someone was having a heart attack......all you can do......is find it for them and place it in the hand......but you CAN not put it in the mouth they must......unless thats changed.......so its all about red tape but yes very frustrating!

Marija...when I was a child, I had a little friend that lived across the road from me and she was jumping on a couch and fell off and hit her head on a CARPETED floor....

She came to but started vomitting and blurred vision and stuff and her mother took her to the hospital straight away. She had severe concussion and was in the hospital for 6 weeks...

they said it was luck the mother brought her in when she did because she had a swollen and bruised brain that needed immediate attention...

Who are THEY to determine how bad it is...they are not doctors.... concussion can be fatal...and the hospital..ambulance was the ONLY course of action they should have taken.

wow thats an eyeopener hiddy!!!!!! Just a fall off a couch to a CARPETED floor......my son must have a head of steel that boy....i swear!!!!!!

Here the schools can not give anything with out a Doctors note and a form signed.......

Name: winnmom | Date: Apr 17th, 2007 5:44 AM
when I did daycare it was the same thing......I would not give ANYTHING, not even apply sunblock , bum cream etc....without a signed slip on file.......

Well the school / daycare etc..has to cover its ass..if it doesn thave a consent form to administer any drug..even panadol..then they cant do it.

Makes complete sense to me. I know someone allergic to paracetamol in the panadol...soooo? Give her that and she has a severe reaction...then you would be complaining and suing the school for administrating drugs without your consent...They started making those changes while i was still in school

Friggen pathetic they didnt call you and let you know..reaction or no reaction..you have a right at a parent to know if ANY accident occured to your child..i would be irrate!

My daughter cant have panadol it makes her puke everywere! So Iam glad they asked me! I have signed already to say my other 2 can have panadol if needed but if they are sick or have a temp I get them and bring them home anyway!

Name: Meagan | Date: Apr 17th, 2007 5:50 AM
yep.. You have a million forms to fill out... Some of the questions they asked though... i couldn't even come up with answers.. They ask about your complete family history and everything...

Yah its nuts..i went with a friend to enroll her 3 year old in daycare...all the forms she brought home..she could of binded and made a book! haha..

But its worth it..i mean so many allergies and food intolerance to things..its dangerous...

Yeah Mason gets this weird rash that the doctors thought was exma ( i know thats not how you spell it!) but the exma cream made it worse so I just stopped using all chemicals on him and it went away... then after a while I started using bubble bath and stuff again and he was fine.. He is getting a little rash on his face atm.. just little bumps...

she had all the symptoms that your little friend had!!!!!....and on the trip there...i was thinking oh god, shes losing colour, friggin hell why didnt they get a bloody ambulance....we live in the country it is a 30 minute to from and into pick her up turn around from our house......then from the school another 20-25 minutes to the hospital!!!......i had to keep her talking the whole way there...cause she would doze and then start crying because she felt like she was going to vomit.
to hear of your little friend and the comparisons...im shaking my head....looking at her now, only a couple of hours later...you wouldnt believe its the same kid....shes roaming about whinging about the colour iceblock that was given to her!!!...so she is fine ...LOL

Yeah Maxi....because its the impact....not necessarily whether the head is split open or not....

You can have a severly gashed opened head that just hit in the right place and not have concussion. And you can have a head injury with no wound that can kill you.

Its VERY important any head injury be taken seriously

Uhmm do it ? Lol i dont care..its a free forum. I didnt give you advice..i made MY obversation..obviously you dont realise if a school administers a drug without constent and the child has a severe reaction...the SCHOOL GETS SUED by the parents...

Obviously the other australians ie: you and hiddy didnt know this..so im lettting the rest of the board know WHY the school just doesnt hand out free drugs. Its nothing to do with you

I didnt say one thing nasty or out of place, but feel free to do the same thing, your the one who is going to look like a dickhead..like Helen..and get slagged off NOT ME sweety :)

Not long ago....my best friends little girl was playing with one of those big gym balls...and lost her balance and fell on a hard tiled floor....my friend heard a crack..... big gaping wound....blood everywhere...

She took her to the hospital and she was fine.... they put some adhesive gel on it to stick it back together...this stuff was waterproof but an hour later she was fine...

just goes to show...

and the friend that got severly concussed on a carpeted floor, no blood, no wound
