Why do they make the baby changing tables so small in the public places? I'm sure it fits a newborn. But all the child psychologists are also saying to wait with potty training until a child is ready - which may happen well into their 3rd or 4th year.

My son is 22 mo but he wears size 3, he's big. so when I put him on the changing station, his legs are hanging off. Imagine a 3 year old on that station. There's no room for him alone, and where do you put wipes, the backpack, the diaper? The pants that you have to take off, the shoes or boots??? Everything has to be put down on the floor - of a public bathroom!!!!!!!!!

I think that they are way to small too and I have not even had to use them. I don't agree with the wait until the are 3 or 4 thing though. kids learn through repatition. I used to work in a day care w/ 2 yr olds and every 2 hours we put the kids on the potty. there were not rewards or punishments we just kept telling them that they could go pee or poo poo in the potty if they wanted. Most kids caught on pretty fast. If they can tell you that their diaper is messy then they can get the hang of it.

E,I sure hope you are personally sanitizing that public changing table thoroughly before you put your baby on it,those things are nasty!

Kids potty train at different ages. My post was about the size. Boys are big, my boy is a size of a 3 year old, though he's under 2. Do they not have the measurment statistics? And, some boys are not trained at 3. I trained my daughter at 2 years 2 months, but I don't think my sone will be ready at that age.

I put my towel on the table, I take one always in his backpack.

Since we are on the road often, it's a painful topic for me. Gas stations, stores, restaurants - we were everywhere, tried all their bathrooms!

That's good! The reason I bring that up is because my brother is a night maintenance cleaner in a restaurant and he said one night he found a mirror and razor blade sitting on one.

E,
I use the same blue pads that they use in the hospital "Chux" for changing. You can get them from a medical supply place. Or Wal-mart has the same thing, but they say puppy training pads, get the ones for large dogs. No joke, they are basicly the same thing just a little more expensive.

He has also come across needles on top of the garbage. Now they could be from diabetics, but maybe not!

the good thing is that since he is 2 you can change him while he is standing up sometimes if he did not go #2. I would be afraid to put a big child up there, becasue not only are they small they don't seem that sturdy to me. You could always keep a large towel and lay it on the floor if you had to. I was lucky I never had to potty train my son. We were in the store when he was 15mo old and he said "mommy I need unnerwares" I was like no only boys who go in the potty can have underware. he said well I can. and he did every since that day. I hope my little girl is as easy.

Stacy, are you saying to put all the paraphernalia on the pad (the bag, the wipes)? I'm not that concerned of the him laying there, I'm concerned that there's so much stuff that I can't put anywhere but the floor! He takes up all the changing station.

I used to change him in the back of my SUV in the warm weather, that was a good size for him and all the cleaning supplies and bags. But it's cold now.

I would not be changing him standing, it's a liquid mess (#2)!

jilw, I'm disgusted to put my backpack and wipes on the floor (of a public bathroom!) , and you are suggesting to put Everything on the floor LOL ????

Yes, I carry 1 or 2 chux, they fold down to the size of a diper. I also have one in my car for those changings also. :)

I put the wipes, & diaper on the top little area(about 2 inches) of the changing table & if a bathroom stall is close I'll hang my bag there, or on a sink, if not on the floor is the only option.

E-- if he only wet his diaper it would not be a "liquid mess" unless the diaper was way over full. It is easy to have him stand there remove the diaper whipe him off and put a new on one. I was sugesting that you put a towel on the floor so that nothing had to touch the dirty bathroom floor. You know if you had to change him while he was standing. I was not sugesting that you lay you son on a nasty bathroom floor sorry if you tood it that way.

I did understand taht you told to put a towel on the floor first, jillw - I pictured my clean towel and what would I do with it afterwards. But it could be done witha disposable pad - it should be big to hold all of my son, the wipes, the backpack, his clothes. So ti whould be the size of a big bath towel.

And, it should be in the big stalls for disabled, too - i wouldn't do it in the walking area.

I usualy dont' change even his #1 standing - he is wiggly, I have to steady him with laying down.

The chucks are a good idea. I guess I was thinking of something that was more cost effective abd I didn't concider washing a towel that was on the floor to be that big of a deal.
