Laika is a rotti black lab cross and is about 16 years old....for a while now she's been kinda limping around and doesn't move very well...i know she getting old and the vet said she has arthritis....fair enough...she's 16 years old....BUT, for the last couple days she won't put any wait AT ALL on her front left paw. when she stands she keeps her paw up in the air, and when she walks she tries to not use her paw at all....the thing that's baffling is you can touch and squeeze her paw, and even her whole leg, and she doesn't wince at all....she doesn't seem in pain when we touch it. so do you think her arthritis is just getting worse in her one leg and paw and that's why she won't use it? we're so confused....did any of that make sense? ha ha

The pain won't be coming from her paw or leg, it'll be coming from the joint where the leg attaches to the body of the dog.

You could try giving her one of those baby aspirins every day that would help with the pain for her, my parents cat Just died she was 17 and for the last few years they gave her a half a of a baby aspirin every other day,, that's what their vet said to do.

I'm not a vet but It sounds like arthritis to me.

thanks zoey....yeah they give her baby aspirin. i think they were going to take her back to the vet just in case it's NOT the arthritis and she hurt herself somehow....

Awww... the poor old girl.

My moneys on the arthritis more than likely its acting up more then normal. Another thing that can inflammation and often times can be misting for arthritis is Lime disease. Lime disease causes extreme pain in the joints as well as swelling in the limbs. Some times the swelling is so slight you wont see it. I would bring her back to the vet just so they can rule out other causes.

Bmes,

If she is taken to the vet please let us know what they say. I know some may not be that interested but I am.

Have you ruled out bone cancer?

I hadn't thought of that until you mentioned it. That's another sad but possibility. When my doberman was limping for no apparent reason I took him to be check, that was one of the first things they check for.

i will for sure. i'm actually going to my dad's tomorrow for about a week, so i will make sure she goes to the vet and will let you know.

thanks for your concern. i really hope everything is ok....i mean she is old, but still...i get so sad when i watch her hobble around. and she has such a sad look on her face. poor girl... :-(

Bmes.
Hows your dads dog, is she any better?

Name: bmes | Date: Oct 10th, 2008 1:51 AM
well dad says she's walking a bit better so if by monday she's still limping around he's taking her to the vet!!! and i'm here to make sure he does....i almost cried yesterday watching her try and go down the stairs. i feel so bad forher...

Awww...I know the feeling. Before I found out my doberman had lime disease he was limping just as you described Laika was. I felt terrible he would seem like he was getting better then he would begin limping again, he too could not put any pressure on his leg/paw.

My dog used to have arthritis and he would do the same thing. We would wrap up a glucosamine pill in a piece of cheese and feed it to him and after about a week of doing that he was walking around again. Still a little slow since he was old but he wanted to play fetch and go for walks instead of just limping around when he "needed" to do something.
It's intended for humans but our vet had recommended it and it really did work.

Bmes, I had a sheppard lb cross, that had arthritis........it was so sad, andhorrible to watch........

yeah my dad was giving her aspirin and glucocamine.

my ex step mom (lol) dropped by to see the kids and she took one look at Laika and was like "that's it! I'LL take her to the vet RIGHT NOW!!!" Laika hadn'r been eating much and was looking very thin....so we took her this afternoon to get checked out....she was losing all her muscle mass, and still limping....and she just looked STRESSED out....then they found she had cancer in her mouth (it looked exactly like a cancer) but the vet wouldn't be 100% sure without all the proper tests which cost around $1000. for a 15/16 year old dog to get $1000 worth of tests done only to find out exactly what we already knew seemed pointless...to just drag out the process....if she had cancer in her mouth who knows where else it had spread....Laika has suffered for long enough...so my dad and brother are now going down to the vet for 4pm to have Laika put down.

she had a great life here at my dad's. chasing all the kids around the pool every summer....and just being smothered with so much love from anyone that ever came here. Laika was the greatest most gentle most sweetest dog on earth and she will be sadly missed....

but i'm happy that she no longer has to be in pain.

bumping for lindalu...knew you wanted an update.

So sorry Bmes.

16 years is a long life for that breed dog and as you said she lived a happy life. We can only do so much for our 4 legged companions when we have to decide when enough is enough.

Thank you for updating me, my thoughts will be with Laika.

Bmes, With how hard it is to put down an animal, I know I had too with my sheppard lab cross, it is in my opion better for the animal......when we put our own selfishness aside, to think of our pets.......

yeah we all knew it was the right thing to do. feels so weird her not being here....I'd ALWAYS be tripping over her cause she'd follow me around all the time or be laying near me where ever i was so when i'd turn around i'd nearly kiss the floor every time...ha ha ha....now when i turn around i expect to trip over her and she's not there....lol...

weird thing happened lastnight. we were all sitting around talking and then all of us all at once heard the grunting sound she'd make all the time when she'd be sleeping. and this morning, I could have SWORN i heard her nails clicking on the tile floors....dad said he heard the same thing when he was laying in bed.

Oh that's so sad!!!
My cat of 12 years had cancer in her mouth and had to be put down a few years ago.

It's so sad to lose a pet/family member.
16 years is a pretty good run though.

How's your dad handling it?

Name: bmes | Date: Oct 16th, 2008 10:16 PM
how did my dad handle it? hmmm...lets see...that evening after they put Laika down, he drank a 1.5 litre bottle of red wine, and a 26 of vodka....lol....
