does he run a fever from time to time? If so, his little body is fighting something. Also, did you know that you can give your child, children's motrin and then children's tylenol about every 4 hours. Alternate between the two. This way, you will have the next dose of medicine in him before his last dose wears off. I would be a little concerned if his ear is a little pink. Has his sinuses been clogged? Any runny nose or coughing? Perhaps he has a sinus infection deep inside his nasal cavitiy that the doc didn't see? Not too long ago, my 7 year old was complaining of headaches all the time. At first, we thought it was a head injury from falling off his bike. My doc sent him for a CAT scan and noticed he had alot of fluid in his sinus cavitiy that was causing him the headaches. Maybe your son has headaches but feels it's his ear?? I hope this helps.

Your welcome, fancy!! I feel real bad for your son and hope he gets better soon. My son's used to get ear infections all the time. Chances are, if he's pulling at the ear, it's pink and running a fever on and off, he has an ear infection. Although, I saw on Good Morning America awhile back that doctors are suggesting to not prescribe medication for ear infections. They said the body has the ability to fight the infection without the antibiotic (sp???). There were times that my son's had a slight infection because they were pulling on their red ears. But if they didn't complain of the pain, too much, I would just give them the pain relievers and after a couple of days, they were back to normal. I'd like to go and slap that doctor for ya. Normally, a child wouldn't be screaming with pain or run a fever if there wasn't something wrong. It's their job to get to the bottom of it, not to send you away. I'm sorry. Keep us posted if anything changes.

Hi Fancy---I used to take my children to a similiar doctor's office. One day, I waited over an hour for a doctor to see my son because he had a bad sinus/ear infection. Finally, I told them that I'd like to charge them for my time of waiting in there office to see a doctor. Needless to say, I was so mad at them, I left and took my son to a different doctor the next day. Also, I found the segement on www.ABCNews.go.com about ear infections. However, this wouldn't fit your circumstance because he's had this for 2 days already. I just thought you would like to know.

Sep 13, 2006 — CHICAGO (Reuters) - Telling parents to wait 48 hours before filling a prescription for antibiotics so they can see if their child's ear infection clears up on its own can help curb overuse of the drugs, researchers said on Tuesday.

U.S. doctors write 15 million antibiotic prescriptions a year for children's ear infections, though there is increasing evidence the drugs may not be necessary. Excessive antibiotic use could lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and cause drug reactions such as vomiting and diarrhea.

By taking a "wait-and-see" approach where the parent is given a prescription but told to wait 48 hours to fill it, researchers at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, found fewer prescriptions were filled.

Out of 238 patients aged 6 months to 12 years brought to a hospital emergency room complaining of ear infections, two-thirds of the parents who were told to wait ultimately did not fill their prescriptions.

The group that did not fill the prescriptions recovered at the same rate as children who had prescriptions filled right away, an indication the condition often clears up on its own.

Those in the wait-and-see group who did obtain the drugs did so because their children developed a fever, an ear ache or fussy behavior.

All the children were given ibuprofen and analgesic drops.

"Parents should be empowered to make a decision at 48 hours whether to fill or not fill an antibiotic prescription and this strategy could significantly reduce antibiotic use in the United States," said Dr. David Spiro, who has since moved to Oregon Health and Science University, in Portland.

"Our study found that empowering parents to do this is a safe and effective strategy," he added.

An editorial accompanying the study in the Journal of the American Medical Association said seriously ill children and those with systemic problems are unlikely candidates for delayed prescribing.

Fancy, as the mother, if you feel he isn't acting and he is really sick then I'd change doctors. He may have something down in his ear and needs it flushed. It may be an infection developing too. Some people are real sensitive to pain. I know when I have an earache I'm like a baby. I'll tell the doctor quick give me the drops that stops pain. Thank goodness you can buy them at Wal-Mart now.
