My 5 year old son went on the Daytrana patch about a month ago. He was on Concerta before. The advantage I see with the patch is I can put it on him before he awakes, so when I get him up for school he is less combative. He has ADHD and ODD. Also, when I take the patch off in the evening, the medicine is out of his system within 15 minutes of removal, so I can plan his bedtime medicine easier. The parent has much more control. There is some redness on the area after removal and once my son took it off during school, but mostly he leaves it alone. I was having difficulty getting him to take the concerta in the morning because of his ODD symptoms. This way he wakes up in a better mood and both of our days get off to a better start.

Are there any side effects , aside from the redness

Sometimes, my son complains that the area where the patch is itches. It's not serious, just a little irritating. As with the concerta, his appetite is diminished, but I can take off the patch a little before dinner and his appetite returns, so he eats better in the evening.
