My son is 8 and since he was 5yrs old they told me he was A.D.H.D. All the RX he was on made him mean and violent. Finally about a year ago i stopped all RX and he was doing good. Then the behavior was getting out of control. Someone told me about a T.O.V.A test. so i found a doctor who did the test. He scored normal on the test! He is not A.D.H.D but he is O.D.D. All this time they just go off a piece of paper. Now I'm trying to learn and meet someone who is dealing with this, with their child! I don't know which way to go anymore? He has me stressed out big time!!!! Any one have any advice!

My son is 5 and has ODD along with ADHD. What I was told from the doctor is that ODD can only be treated with behavior modification; however, his ADHD had to be under control in order for the behavior modification to work. What kinds of meds was he on and what kind of discipline techniques do you use? We have to use a lot of rewards and consequences, incentive charts, ignoring bad behavior (to the extent that you can) and positive comments for any behavior that is good and that you want him to repeat. The biggest thing we learned is that with ODD, you MUST keep your voice under control...no yelling. That's just what they want...to see you get upset. It's extremely hard to do. Sometimes you just have to walk away yourself to get yourself under control. At 10 he's probably too old anyway, but no spanking, as anything physical exacerbates the problem. Just lots of consequences and rewards. We have good and bad days, but I was also told that you won't see results for a long time (could be months), but that it's important to keep consistent for it to be effective. Keep persevering; don't give up.
