My 8 year old son got diagnosed with ADHD along with a learning disability today...they gave me a rx for methylphenidate but I am not so sure about it yet...I am not so sure about him having this ADHD either...I am really in turmoil about this....he displays so many symptoms but is not aggressive...has directed his frustrations toward himself....I want to help him and I feel helpless...teachers have been requesting I get him tested three times now and each time I did but this time the doctor actually agreed....I might too....

My daughter has add, she is not aggressive , except with her brother, but I think thats a sibling thing. She is a dreamer, can't focus, struggles with math and comprehension things. don't feel bad about not wanting to try meds. I struggle with it every day. But I don't want her falling anymore behind. the good thing about add meds are that if that is the issue you will notice a difference or his teachers will see a difference with as little a a day or two. If its not then there won't be a difference and don't continue with it. My issue with my daughters meds are that its hard to fall asleep and appetite supression is hard. If you would like to talk more about it, email me at [email protected] (Paige)

Look into diet then. My oldest child was a dreamer and I wish I would of known then what i know now. I bet i could of releaved him of simptoms if I would of went with a restriction diet. Just google Adhd and diet and you'll get all the info you need. Also start her on a multi vitamin and omega 3, and ginko. You'll see inprovement in mental alertness in about 2-3 weeks.

Before putting my son on Focalin (working terrific without appetite loss) We had two years of behavioral modification counseling. Dr. said he was so good to work with, smart and calm. Many times add won't show in that situation. But in class he can't stop talking, distracting others & interupting teacher. Other mom is right, you'll know in a day or two if rx is working. To me when "their self esteem is lifted" I feel better about the whole thing. Good luck!

It's hard for sure.
I put my son on Concerta--results were amazing. He could barely read a sentence without the frustration, then YAHOO...he read a book! Page after page. it was a great feeling for me and him.
The meds help him concentrate and then of course you learn.
As far as the aggression, not every kid will experience it. My son coudnt' handle his anger, they sent him to anger management class [ a good thing. Also get him a punching bag, have him run (treadmill?) it tires them out and in turn releases their aggression. ADHD kids need a realease, they are good in sports because they can run, etc. My son excelled in wrestling, which in turn helped focus and there are rules to be followed.
It's hard to face facts, but it's not fair for him to go through life fighting for what comes naturally to others. I've told my son life isn't fair, and for you it's going to be harder. We've got to work together. Seach the net for info--so much good stuff out there now.
