I am a mother of 2 boys; my 4yr. old has autism. I have done a lot to try and help him but I would love to hear ideas from other parents. There is so much out there to help them and it's hard to know sometimes what works and what doesn't. I would like to know what has helped, and hasn't helped, other parents' autistic children. Thanks!!

Speech therapy, speech therapy speech therapy. Music therapy. Wish we could have afforded ABA. In Australia you pay for it your self. There isn't much here in the way of early intervention. A gluten casein free diet. (it works for my kids but not all) Sensory intergration helps with my daughter. There are no miracle cures or tonics out there and be very careful of the promises people make. If they worked there would be no autism. What works for one child doesn't necessarily work for all. My two kids are very different with very different isses. Just playing with my kids and teaching them things. PECS = picture exchange communication. My husband and I doing the Hanen Program- this helps you communicate with your child the way they can communicate and at the level they are at. Getting them out in the community...taking them shopping to the park the zoo etc. Its hard but thats how they learn. Reading books by people with autism and attending lectures given by adults with autism. Doing research. My son attending an autism specific school when he turned 5 .Hope some of this helps. Liz

In my case, my daughter , 4 this month, has seen alot of success with early intervention. She fights learning. You try to guide her hands (modelling) and she will fight it. You must be persistent, but they will learn....visually.

Thank you all for your suggestions!!! onlinedizzy: i currently have both my boys on GFCF diets. And i agree it does work wonders. My kids wouldn't be doing as well as they are without it. I've heard a lot about things like RDI or Infared Saunas, the list goes on...there is always something that somebody thinks is great for treating autism. It's just that you never know what is going to work and they all cost a ton of money. We've already spent close to $25,000.00 just to help our son. At what point do I say that we have to stop chasing rainbows? Getting our hopes up that the next thing will do the trick and spend thousands more dollars doing it. So far i've found the GFCF diet, ABA therapy and Bio-treatment to be the most helpful. Other than that it's hard to justify spending thosands that we just don't have on treatments that are nowhere near guaranteed, let alone likely, to work. Any thoughts from other parents on their frustrations with the lack of knowledge on how to help our children? Again, thank you all for responding!

Mardie: Thats awesome! I hope your son continues to improve. My son talks a lot now. Recently we just experienced him really regressing for the first time. He's bounced back now but it was a shock for all of us. The diet has helped the most I believe. Good Luck to you too!!

I usse a 5 point scale, you can look it up on ebay, there is a book called the five point scale and with it a book called when my worries get too big. Ihave found this to help my child and me to learn when i am asking to much of her.

My daughter (5) is on the diet as well and it has helped a lot. Another thing that has helped is a powder probiotic called Primal Defense by Garden of Life. There are several testimonials on their site mentioning using it along with the diet. We use it in much smaller amounts than suggested on the container. We just mix it in with her drink. A straw would help. It can be hard to get down because it is a dark color. But it has helped her. She did go through a tough week of detox during the second week on the product, which was a surprise. He hair actually had a very awful metalic smell sometimes, but it would decrease after we washed it. We have no idea what that was about. Her appetite improved and her energy seemed more normal. We also saw some gains in language. (We do not give it to her when she has a cold or something. Just when she's healthy. I have also had the rest of the family take it. I also went through a detox, but nobody else seemed to have any problem. We don't take it every day. One can has lasted the whole family a month or more. It runs about $30 for a small container of powder.)

Hi, we did alot of things. applied behavioral analysis, changed their diet, took the tv away for awhile, lately we have been using glyconutritionals and have had good success although you have to be patient and commit to using them for at least six months.

Cod liver oil really helps.... not only the autistic brain but it also will boost any person's immune system. The healing is gradual. My son, has been healing gradually from ASD with CLO and other supps. There;s more Dr. Megson info on the web. Also check out Dr. Yasko at www.holistichealth.com. Love, Jack's Mom
