Hi Lizzy ,
I have a 6 year old son who is also autistic. My son used to have quite a few meltdowns also.In my opion alot of it has to do with not being able to communicate or get you to understand their needs. The PECS ( Picture exchange communication system) worked wonders for my son wich was implemented into his preschool program. When he was first diagnosed at 2 we started him in speech, occupational, and physical thearpy 1 hour each 1 time a week . Our son did not speak either but now with the therapys and The pecs system he talks very well and is able to comprehend just aboout everything asked of him.He just finished kindergarten and will be going into the first grade this school year at a 3rd grade reading and spelling level. We still are working on his social skills but I believe we can get past that hurdle eventually. Tristan still has meltdowns periodicly and it seems the more I try to comfort him the worse he will get, I will ignore him until he calms down enough to talk with. These kids do understand what your saying it is just trying to get their point across that is so frustrating for them. I highly recommend trying to get a picture exchange system in place for your daughter, you should be able to talk to your school about the program or mabey somebody who heads up your school district should be able to get you the help you need. Best wishes , Christina

Hello,
This is my first time on a chat but I read over some of the letters you were e mailed . I can't beleave no one said anything about ABA therapy. I'm a mother of a 6 YR. boy with autism and we have him in a aba group and I think I know what you are talking about .Because I have seen children meltdown as you put it and the only thing you think you should do s let them alone so they can calm down, but these therapist are angels Im telling you the way they talk and get though to our children is something you need to see. Even if your child is verbal or not it works and part of what they do is better then speech therapy they will find a way for your child to communicate. And all these behaiors they to will be able to work with and I'm sure that would be so helpful for you because we have bad days to but I'm glad to say we have more good then bad finally!!! If you ever want to talk more just write .I would love to hear how things are going and GOOD LUCK you can do it.

The head banging has stopped but not the hands. A good doctor and patinece is all I can say.i live in NB, Canada. the one I go to is awesome. hello. I am a mom of two. My oldest was diag. with autism and im trying to find out information on things i should be expecting from him at his age. He is 28 months old and only says dada and a few vowel sounds. Could this be normal for a 2 year old?

Hi I came across this site trying to do more research on the brain and autism.. I have a 4 year old autistic son and a 6 year old aspergers son. We do so much therapy and my son at 2 was non verbal and now he has had so many extreme gains. I live in Phx . Arizona and there are alot of support groups here with some extremely bright people aboard. We chelate and do viral stuff along with immune. We also do alot of speech and hab work and try to keep him into outdoor activities alot. He talks and plays with his brother and 3 years ago this was something I dreamed about. I can definatly say there are some great treatments out there so find the one that fits for you and keep trying until you see something working, There is no such thing as this being non treatable so dont buy into that non hope crap. I first hand see so much results and want to make sure that everyone understands that there are treatments out there that help tremendously. Hope this gives some hope. Kris

I have a 2yr old that 3 doctors say he might have autism. Hes not talking yet but (i think) acts like a normal 2yr old. Screams when he does not get his way, is attached to mommy and his bear bear etc... Could this possibly be a misdiag. just because hes not talking????? Help!!!!

Julianna, i would not rule out autism and start treating him for it. The younger you get a start on this the better the outcome, most times. There are simple things that you can do to help him get a good start like a gluten/casien free diet along with no preservatives and dyes. Try to go more natural no hormones. Alot of the kiddos I know have done really well with this diet. There are alot of other things that you can do but this is usually the first step with alot of parents and try to get him some services through the state use the diagnoses to get him some speech therapy and other free services. If this is a wrong diagnoses than at least your child will have a head start and nothing is lost]

Hi How are you?
I also have a 8year old son with austim and finding life really hard i would love to find a friend with a austic child to help learn more and chat about our children.

I have an 8 year old son with autism as well and it is very difficult as well. I hope things get better and in some ways, he has grown in leaps in bounds but other ways, the behaviors get worse b/c he is growing up. I am afraid when the hormones kick in. I feel I have no friends anymore since it is almost impossible to bring him and my two other children somewhere without him doing something like running or darting and making life miserable for us. He needs so much attention that we can't take vacations without it being extremely difficult. No one really wants to deal with him or us and we don't get invited more than once somewhere. Other moms take their kids for playdates and I can't even do that for any of my kids since it will be all about my autistic son and 100% of the attention needs to be on him. I am new here and I hope to find some support. They say there is 1 in 166 children with autism and how come when I go to Walmart, I never see other autistic children.

I also have a non verbal child with autism. He is 8 and we do some sign language which really helps him slow down and effectively communicate. the signs are not perfect but we can get his needs and wants met which helps in the tantrum department. We also have a augmentative device which is like a small computer that he uses at school to communicte with his teachers. I find that my sons frustration has improved greatly once we got some tools to help him express his needs. Now we are having a problem when he can express his desires and we have to tell him no. It is a constant struggle and there are good days and bad, ofcourse more bad but you really appreciate the good.
