Everyone I've asked says that the avent manual pump is great. I have a Gerber electric one that someone gave me, it's the only one I've tried, I think it works fairly well for me now. I couldn't get any milk out using it the first month or so, but I think it was me more than the pump, so don't get discouraged when you do start trying to use a pump, it definately takes some time getting used to and practice.

r u going back to work after babe is born or r u just wanting to pump occasionally? if your going back to work then you should get a hospital grade pump like the medela. but if you not going to pump very often then a manual pump should be fine.

My husband bought me the ameda purely yours pump, and it is absolutely wonderful!

I have the Avent ISIS manual pump and it is excellent! All the medical professionals in my area recommend Avent as the best breast pump. I was able to use it with extreme ease right from the first use, it is user friendly and works wonderfully.

if your not going back to work then i wouldn't spend a huge amount of money on a pump. if you just wanting to get milk for occasional use you can always hand express. it is free!

I have the medella breast pump (electric) and it works awesome. It pumps well and my hands dont get tired. I bought it from babies r us 7 years ago .. my son is now 6 yo and im just waiting to use it any day now. I am due for a c-section on wed 2/21

Medela Electric is AWESOME.. It's expensive but portable. Looks like a brief case. It was a god send with my son. I breast fed until he was 7months and you will have more freedom to get out. A pump allows you to leave a bottle or freeze milk for future use. An Avent hand pump is also great but takes forever. Good luck.

the medela are great. I have tried 4 kinds from electic to manual. The medela are hospital grade and the yellow one works the best. Its the newest model. I don;t think that you can get it in the stores . I'd try a hospital thats where I got mine.

I had to pump for my preemie for 2 weeks because he needed to be bottle fed (I just stopped today.. for a variety of reasons). Everyone told me to get the Medela, but I bought a First Years pump for $60 at walmart. It was a double electric and worked better than the hospital's Medela pump. The cups are soft silicone like a breast sheild and it was a lot more effective. I think that the $200 pump would have been just rediculous because this one worked fine. It also has a handle thing for one handed double pumping. With a bit of practice I could actually feed my baby with one hand and pump both breasts with the other.

i'm glad you responded nicole, i've been wondering about you. how is your babe? u said you quite pumping, are you still nursing? just curious.

I am still deciding on what I'm doing Melissa.... possibly beginning nursing again in a few months. The doctor is pretty clear that Josh is to small to waste the energy right now on trying to get the hang of it. I've had a few women hint that they think that's a cop out.... but he's 2 weeks old and weighs 5 pounds even... so he can't stand to be losing even an ounce. The doc is weighing him twice a week right now.

I quit pumping because I was getting severely engorged since Josh eats so little, and it was taking up all of my time. Once I'd fed, changed, rocked to sleep, and pumped it was time to feed again. If I could just grab him and nurse him then that would be ideal. I'm praying that I can switch to that later on... and if not, that my next baby isn't so early. I had planned to breastfeed for at least 6 months.

Mixing the formula (not to mention buying it) is not exactly what I was hoping for... but it's much better than staying awake 24-7. There aren't any nurses here at home to feed him when I'm falling asleep on my feet. lol.

But besides that all is well. He's more awake and alert every day, and beginning to prefer being held to sleeping on his own. He was so floppy and unresponsive at first. It seemed like he hardly cared that we were here. I suppose that's because I'm only supposed to be 37 weeks pregnant as of yesterday...so all this attention is a little ahead of schedule for him.

Thank you for asking. I'm sure I'll be posting on here like crazy when (and if) I change back to breastfeeding.

Oh... I forgot reason #2... which is really more of a bonus, because it wouldn't have ever been a deciding factor without the sleep issue. I plan to get pregnant again (yes, I know... call me crazy) soon. So the extra caveat of a delayed period will hopefully not be an issue for me now. That was the logic behind planning on 6 months of nursing.... that's when I plan to try for another baby.

glad to hear u and babe are doing good. have you heard of a SNS nursing system. if/when you try again this would be very helpful for you. u should check them out. i do feel for ya, pumping is a major pain in the ass. i don't know how some women can do it for so long. just make sure u wait long enough for your body to heal really well before trying again. especially since you had a premie.
