OK. Took Joey to see the specialist today, and he has diagnosed Joey with Plagiocephaly. He told me it probably happened whilst he was in the womb, or in the birth canal, and that it is caused because sometimes the bones fuse together before they are supposed to.

Because Joey sleeps on his back, it means the condition isn't correcting itself as well as it would if he sideslept. But because of the SIDS risk, I was adviced to keep Joey on his back while he sleeps and put him on his belly while he plays.

He wants Joey to see a physiotherapist who'll give me more advice on this. And then Joey has to go back in 3 months; he'll continue seeing Joey till he is 2 years old, and if it hasn't corrected itself by then, which we hope it will, he'll discuss surgery.

I asked about the helmet idea, but he told me we don't use helmets for Plagiocephaly in this country ...

So Joey was also weighed and measured - he's 19lb 13oz and 70cm long.

I'm pretty happy with what was said!

I'm glad your appointment went well. Hopefully it corrects itself on it's own.

lol. He's still my tiny boy! :) He doesn't seem all that big. He's not fat or anything like that. He's on the 75th centile on length, weight and head circumference so it's all good. :)

Tyler is almost 11 months and i think hes around 21-22 pounds.

if hes 7 months old he can sleep on his belly, as soon as they can lift their head and move and turn their head its ok, Tyler slept on his side and then when we was a few months old we put him to bed on his belly, and he slept longer at a time, and now he only goes to sleep on his stomach, and he goes that way by his self.
good to see that his appt whent ok.

And why would they perform surgery?
To make more room for the brain?

i'm confused on how the whole percentile thing works because cole is 16 1/2lbs and 27 1/2" long and they said that he is in the 75th percentile on everything. so him and joey are in the same percentile even though they are different sizes? i'm so confused lol

it goes by Age! there is a percentile for every month.

Lola, I don't know. That's just what he said to me. Perhaps just to correct it?

I dunno. But Joey has been on the 75th Centile ever since he was born on everything. I have a little development chart and he's going along the 75th centile line every time he's weighed and measured.

Actually now I look, for about 4 months, he was actually 80th centile, but now he's back to the 75th again at almost 7 months.

I hope Joey doens't end up needing surgery, sounds like your appointment went good. Hopefully once he starts being up more, like crawling and walking, etc, his head will be able to heal itself. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I was keeping my fingies crossed for you both since I read you were taking him in. I am glad you are happy with the visit. From what I remember, I think there's some exercises you can do with him and I vaguely remember something about trying to keep him in positions which limit the amount of time he spends lying on the affected area. Anyway, I am sure the PT person will talk about all those things and more and in no time, Joey's little noggin will be just fine :)

Btw, Wyatt never was much of a back sleeper at all. At 4.5 months he was turning over during his sleep and I would freak for weeks. I bought those little triangle thingies and propped in on his side thinking that at least was better than his tummy...they lasted a few months and then it was tummy sleeping for good.
