I am 39.5 weeks pregnant and my doctor asked if I wanted my membranes swept, I said no because my sister had hers swept and said it hurt like the dickson. But then she went into labor that night. So my question is two fold. Is it really that bad and has it worked for anyone eles?

It doesnt hurt that bad, maybe a little cramping but like leila said it is a breeze compared to labor. So if you want labor to begin the maybe suck it up and do it. But its all up to you.

its not too bad...its really quick. But it worked for me!! With my first baby I had my membranes stripped and went into labor that night. I guess it depends on how anxious you are to be un-pregnant.

Is a membrain sweep breaking the water? I would like to know what it is?

No a membrane sweep is when the MD inserts a finger into your cervix and seperates (sweeps) the membranes between your cervix and bag of water. Although it is not intended to break your water there is a very small risk of this happening. It increases the likelyhood that you will go into labor within the next 48 hours, no guarantees though. No offense, but why don't you look it up if you don't know what it is?

In my 9 months of pregnancy this is the first time I have heard of this. I did look in my books just not on line. Isn't that what these forums are for. Maybe I m wrong

I wouldn't do it. It is sometimes not safe for the mother and can cause a hard labor. But then again, I don't like any form of induction or medical intervention unless the child or mother is in danger. I hope that whatever decision you make is one you are happy with though and I wish you the best of luck!! I hope you have a great labor! Is it a boy or a girl?

I had a membrane sweep and it lead to my waters breaking before I was in proper labour. I ended up with an emergency c-section and my son was Strep-B positive because my waters had been broken for so long. It was very painful and almost ended in disaster. Let nature take its' course. Don't let anyone interfere with you!

I had mine done and my Dr. just did it when I was at 38 weeks, I went a week and a half overdue. Did nothing for me, but I know it works great for some. Dr. said it just stirs things up and gets them moving, really didn't affect my labor though! Anyway, it's worth a try, much better to do it taht way than to have to go over and get induced or end up with a big baby and need a c-section, couldn't hurt and it's not bad, at that pint the internal exams are already uncomfortable and it goes quick, you'll be fine.

Well I went to the doctor today, and this time she didn't even ask, she just did it. I was 2 cm and 100% effaced. It wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. One website I looked at this lady gave her testimony and said it was like being raped by an elephant. It was definitly uncomfortable just not excruicating like I expected. My contractions are bewteen 3 and 7 minutes apart now, I hope they start to get a little more regular! Anyways if you don't hear from me I guess that means it worked! Good luck to you Leila, I am sorry it didn't work for you. Jackie btw I don't know what I am having.

Denise 100% effaced?! You are so lucky, you should go pretty quick because you have less to do in labor, of course you never know with labor, but I hope you have your little one shortly!!!
