Mabey some of you can answer this for me??? i had 2 Koi and 4 goldfish in my pond outside and being i live in NC i brought them inside to a 55 gallon tank they were good in there for about 4 weeks then my koi died and 1 goldfish died now the 3 remaining lay on the bottom of the tank all the time all my levels are normal and there is no reason for this other than i think mabey they are depressed....so my question is this is it possible for a fish to be sad??? or am i missing something that would make them lay on the bottom of the tank all the time???

The koi were about 3 inches long and the gold fish are about 2 inches long

The change of environment has probably affected them. What's your nitrate levels? The water in a tank is going to be of a different quality than that of a pond.

What type of filtration system do you have in your tank - goldfish and koi require high filtration.

Do you use any Aquarium Salt as a general tonic and conditioner. This often does the trick with fish who are lethargic and sickly due to an unknown cause.

Test your levels again just to make sure that they're okay as this kind of thing is usually due to faulty levels. I know when my nitrates are climbing as my goldfish immediately becomes lethargic. The rest of the fish in the tank can be fine, but the goldfish is sensitive to shaky levels.

Let me know what kind of tank setup you have.

Of course fish can be sad, look at Nemo's dad Marlin,
He was like a neurotic manic depressive

I have a 55 gallon tank with 2 60+ filters on the back i use 2 tablespoons of aquarium salt every water change and i have live plants that are doing great i have a featherd catfish that is great also my nitrates and nitrites are all under 10 ppm my ammonia levels are under .1 ppm ph is 6.8 so that is why i say my tank levels are good the tank has been setup 4 2 years and has never had a 100% water change it started as tropical fish then i got borree with them sold them and got goldfish and Koi they weere in the pond all spring and summer but then moved in to the tank i replaced 25% of the water with pond water to make the transition easier for them but i guess i did something wrong... still trying to figure it out....

Hiddy: yeah but poor marlin lost his wife and child. my poor fish did not loose anything... and being they could be sad how can i make them happy again i know it sounds wierd but i love my fish and it hurts me to see them die.

Yeah, the levels sound fine. Perhaps it's just the shock of changing environment or there is some kind of infection going on. Internal bacterial infections can produce these symptoms - esp. if death is occuring. Try an internal antibacterial medication.

Also, if you do lose the other goldfish then I'd advise that you completely clean out your tank before restocking. Clean it out with hot water and sterilise it with some Milton. Rinse thoroughly. Buy new gravel, plants, ornaments etc. Sterilise any filter bits that you are able to.

Have you ever kept White Cloud Mountain Minnows? They're great - easy to keep and very tough despite their size. I had six, but my Bleak ate one! I have one goldfish and the Bleak is from the local river - some kids caught it!

Goldfish and Koi do not like warm water temperatures. Make sure that you don't have a heater on and that the water stays fairly cool.

is there a way you can get a heater for your pond so they can stay outside, unless it is snowing i understand why you can't...

I have kept white clouds they are sold as tetras here we usually keep them with neons and the such, I bought an internal parasite killer and they seem to be doing better. I thought about buying a heater but the problem is that its just a tiny pond mabey 300 gallons max and all the heaters our local stores sell are for 500+gallon ponds and it does snow here. I know that gold fish and koi are cold water fish but they do like to have an even temperature so a heater is not nessicaraly a bad thing you just need to make sure it is not warmer than 70 degrees.

Atomic Snowflake: have you ever heard of dolphin whales??? they are a really cool fish that only gets about 6 inches long and they look just like little black dolphins they are playful. I had 2 at one time i payed like $30 for each of them and now i cant find them anywhere. but they are awsome fish they like to jump though thats why i dont have them any more.
