Hi I'm a first time mom to my daughter Laylah who will be 5 months old next week. I know I'm probably worrying about this too soon, but when do I start 1st foods, 2nd foods, 3rd foods? I went to the store and looked at baby foods and there were jars (I looked at Gerber) that said 1st foods, 2nd foods, 3rd foods, I know you start babies on rice cereal (single grains then to multi grains)...well i recently started the rice cereal from a spoon and she is actually doing great with it. I did research and it says babies should start between 4-6 months (most doctors say 6 months but when a baby shows interest in the foods you eat and wants to grab them off your plate and can supportedly sit up and double their birth weight, etc etc) well she does all those...so I started the cereal...she loves it and I noticed before i started the cereal she just didnt seem to get enough of her bottle. anyways I have purchased some 1st foods so i have them and dont have to run to the store when she's ready, but how long after i start 1st foods do I start 2nd foods and how long after 2nd foods do I start 3rd foods? she'll be 8 months old by Thanksgiving time, could I give her some plain mashed potatoes at that time? And Xmas time she'll be 9 months, would that be okay for then too? Any advice would help!!! thanks!!--Jasmin

Well I have never fed my son the jars of food and I didn't start him on cereal, but usually you start your baby on solids between 4-6 months. Talk to your doctor or pediatrician.

My doctor gave me the ok when my son was 4 months. I started him on things like sweet potato and avacado. I never watered it down like they tell you to because my son wouldn't eat it.

How old is she? If you are going to start her on babyfood, use the stage one. I would not use the stage 2 or 3 foods ever as they add preservatives and thickeners that they ARE NOT required to list on the ingredients label. Some of the stage 3 foods are loaded with salt and sugar as well. By the time your child is ready for stage 2 or 3 they can be on table food. My son is 8.5 months old and he eats whatever we do, as long as there is no added salt or sugar. He can also feed himself now, so he can eat things like pasta and steamed veggies. By the time thanksgiving and christmas come, your baby should be able to eat chunks of turkey and definitely mashed potatoes.

Randi, thanks for your reply. My daughter will be 5 months in 3 days. Well she had her doctors checkup last week and she said I can start now...well I've already been feeding her a few wks before the checkup the rice cereal. I started the baby foods and she loves them, so I do 3-4 days of each new food to see if she has any allergic reactions to them, so far nothing...ya once she's ready for the 2nd (for sure 3rd foods) I want to make my own, that way I know what goes in it and I don't have to worry about preservatives that they add in commercial foods. My daughter will be 8 months by Thanksgiving time and the doctor said it was fine to feed her mashed potatoes and things like that, so you said your son is 8.5 months and he eats pasta and steamed veggies? K that was my next question (that I'm sure my doctor will also answer in October when I have to take Laylah back) but if she'd be able to eat more than mashed foods by 8 months? When did you start feeding him things like pasta and steamed veggies? anything that wasnt mashed i guess is what im asking? thanks for your advice!! so she could eat turkey at that time too? like little diced chunks?

Put it in front of them and see what they latch on to. Just keep trying so that whenthey are older, they will eat what you eat and you aren't making 4 different meals....

I started Kaden on diced meats and pasta at about 6 months. I would just make sure not to add salt or sugar to my cooking. Spices are ok though. I would steam or bake a chicken breast and then dice it. For the pasta, I use whole wheat pastas such as macaroni or rotini. He also loves spaghetti noodles cut into small pieces. For veggies, I just steam carrots (you should wait until8 months to do your own carrots) or give raw slices of cucumber. He also loves sliced black olives. Anything he can put in his mouth : )

As for feeding mash foods, I never really did. I always made my own food and would pretty much mash it by hand. He never liked things of a thin consistancy so I never watered it down and I always left chunks.

If you have the time to make your food, I would try not to start your baby on cereal. They are actually starting to recommend a veggie such as avacado or sweet potatoes because of the problem with childhood obesity. All the cereal is, is carbs, so if you can get away from having a cereal as your first food, I would. Kadens first was avacado.

Oh, and yes she should be able to have turkey by then I think. Just don't put gravy on it or anything (really salty and fattening) and make sure she can handle it.
