my daughter is only 6 weeks old and my mom wants to feed her rice cereal. my mom fed her rice cereal behind my back when she was 3 weeks old and it caused my daughter to vomit and to have loose then hard stools. my mom is still pushing me to feed her rice cereal and tells me to stop believing everything i read in baby books. i merely use the books as guidelines and i dont feel the need to feed her rice cereal as long as she is gaining weight and is content with formula. am i so wrong for doing so?

trust your instincts! My sisters MIL forced her to feed her son solids when he was around the same age and he now suffers from bowel problems!... Just be careful what she is eating and only do what you beleive is right!....

You know Belle is on cereal.... has been since 3 weeks old (for reflux) but I wanted to go by the books with Tyler, no matter whay YOU are her mom, not your mother. So you know what is best for your baby!

Belle is 5 weeks now, she was born just a couple of days behind Mallory's.... she is also allergic to milk, so it has been tough

she holds down her food just fine and is very content with formula but my mom claims, "i'm starving her" even though she's on perfect track with her weight gain. she just makes me feel like a bad mom. thanks guys

You are NOT starving her Mal! Seriously if she wanted more she would cry or give you some sign she was still hungry!

Hi Spanky, my little one is 16 weeks old and I haven't given her any rice cereal yet. I don't think they recommend it until they are at least 4 months old unless of course they have severe reflux and it is the only way that they will keep their milk down. If she is growing well and putting on weight with the milk there is no need to giver her any rice cereal yet. I was going to try with my little girl in the next couple of weeks, but I weighed her today and she is 7.1kg!!! What a chumba, maybe i'll hold off on the rice cereal for a while because the formula is working!

Do not let anyone make you feel like a bad mom, you are not starving her if she is putting on weight and is within all the normal development ranges, don't worry. My grandmother was trying to get me to feed her solids at 6 weeks also, it sounds like it was common practice way back when they were young

My parents and step-parents have been asking me "have you put that baby on cereal yet?" (my son is 8 weeks old)---they are also big believers on starting cereal real young so they will "sleep through the night". I remember my Home-ec teacher in high school also saying you should start cereal that young---I think it was something that generation did and now-a-days they are saying it causes obesity and/or diabetes. BUT I guess most of us in our "20's" were raised that way and I would say most of us turned out just fine. So basically I guess its up to your instincts like the others have said!

Babies SHOULD NOT be given any solids at this age - it can affect their kidneys!!!!!!!!

You must tell her to stop doing this - it is potentially dangerous!!!!!!!!!!! Get some info. from the doctor or Health Visitor that you can show the silly woman to prove to her that she shouldn't be doing this.

She should have more respect for both YOU and her grandchild.

I'm disgusted. I hate grandparents like this!!!!!!!!! They have NO respect at all!!!!!!!

BABY MILK CONTAINS EVERYTHING THAT A BABY NEEDS FOR THE FIRST FOUR MONTHS OF LIFE AT LEAST!!!!!!!!!

YOU ARE NOT STARVING HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MY GOD, I'M SOOOOOOOO MAD NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tell her to come on here and I'll tell her a thing or two! I'm a Registered Nurse!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we gave both of our kids cereal at a very early age and they took it just fine. zac had reflux and alyssa was just a little piggy hehehe. she was drinking waaayyyy too much formula at one time and was puking it up cuz she just couldn't hold it all. BUT... every child is different! go with your gut! You are the mommy not her! AND...if i causes her to vomit and have irregular bowel movements...I wouldn't do it. she definitly won't starve!

and just what is vegemite???? I have seen many of you talking about it but I have never heard of it

It's a yeast- based spread - a bit like Marmite, only not as strong-tasting. Babies shouldn't be given this either - there's too much salt in it.

no of course not...your the mother...everyone has their own opinions about it...but in the long run...it's your decision. for me, i started feeding my son ceral when he was around 3 weeks old (that's just me), and he had no problem with it...my mom and grandma always told me that it helps them sleep better at night b/c their fuller...my son started sleeping through the night when he was 1 month...everyone's different...but it's up to you!!

I gave my kids cereal (all 3 of them) at about 3 weeks. It helps them sleep through the night. And my oldest was drinking 13oz every 3 hours. So she needed something else, the formula just wasn' tfilling her up, but if you think she's not ready then wait. It's best to go with your instincts.
