Who is having a natural birth and who is going for the drugs? Does the gas help much? I am terrified of needles and trying to avoid going for the epi...Any experience with either would be appreciated...

I don't think that you can plan either way. You just have to wait and see how you feel at the time. Be open-minded. If you're in a great deal of pain during labour then needles will be the last thing on your mind. Epidurals are okay. They give you a local anaesthetic so you can't feel the needle going into your spine - you just feel pressure and pushing a bit - it doesn't hurt.

If you go for natural and find that you need painkillers after all then don't feel like you've failed in any way.

I had a natural birth and am planning for another one. Like Fiona said, it is hard to plan especially if it's your first one because you don't know how bad it's going to hurt. It also depends on your mindset. If you think it's going to be unbearable, it probably will be. You're the only one who knows your tolerance for pain, so let that guide you. If you do opt for drugs, make sure you get some information on them before you're actually in the delivery room. Best of luck!

If you are interested in a natural birth
I would strongly suggest seeing a PLM professional Lay midwife your out come will be a beautiful experience. There is no such thing as a completly natural birth with a Dr. or in a hospital. Being in the hospital alone is unnatural. You have good reason to be scared of the epidural I had one and the feeling on the inner side of my calf has never returned. I'm lucky though somethings worse can happen and yes for all those who disagree most of the time there is no prblem with it but why take the risk. Being the bath tub is great for natural pain relief

I'm hoping to have a natural birth, but I'm too far away from my due date to know exactly what will happen

Ladies!!!! YOU NO LONGER HAVE TO BE IN PAIN!!!! GET THE EPIDURAL!! ITS 2006!!!!

I would have sacrificed the epidural to not have the pain of my c-section. epidurals put a woman in a postion where she cannot get out of her bed squat and push her baby out quickly and efficeintly. Epidurals are just one more intervention that can lead to a c-section. way more painful.

hi Jennica how are you today. I wasn't going to get on today but I feel the need to let all theses moms to be know what I know. I still need to study but I guess when I get under enough pressure I'll pull out the books

jennica
Have you tried looking for a PLM yet? an acupuncturist can help you with your back pain too, or just go get a massage. If you can't afford it put your boyfriend to work. How far along are you? Where do you live east or west?

Yeah i started looking for a midwife yesterday. I live on the west coast and i'm 6 months along. I've always had a bad back i was in a car wreck about 3 years ago. Where do you live?

Name: sonia | Date: Mar 3rd, 2006 5:21 PM
I live in New Mexico and because we don't have a lot of Dr here my insurance covers PLM and acupuncture, even massage if going for pain. Have you ever tried a chiropracter? I haven't but I think they might be able to help with your back. Have you been seeing a Dr. or have you not been to anyone yet?

No i haven't seen a dr. yet. Is that bad?

It will probablly be okay but you should get to one soon. not a Dr. a midwife. Have you been taking a vitamin? Hopefully at least eating a healthy balanced diet.
