I went to my 37 week checkup yesterday and my doctors receptionist casualy brings up my co-payment for the delivery. I wasn't aware that I had a co-payment for my delivery. If I would have known that I would have to pay something towards delivering this baby, I would have opted and got the insurance from my job to use as well as my husband's insurance. So she tells me my total amount due will end up being around $500. They want me to start making payments before I deliver my baby!
I'm already not getting maternity leave from my job, so $500 is really going to get us off budget. This is starting to bug me.
Do any of you ladies have to pay anyting out of pocket for you delivery?

Our insurance didn't fully cover my delivery, hospital stay and everything else that it entailed. We didn't have to pay ahead of time though. We got itemized claims for everything a couple weeks after the delivery showing us what was fully covered and what was partially covered and how much we owed.

I wonder what exactly are the requirements to qualify for short term disability. Mizzbrandiss, have you worked for you company for at least one year? I know that is a requirement to recieve FMLA and I've only worked for this company since I've been pregnant.
I'll go into the office and ask one of the human resources reps about short term disabilty. I'm thinking about asking if I can sign up for the health insurance that is offerred also, that way we won't have to pay the co-paument, I would only have $40 coming out of my checks until I deliver.

I would call you in co and see. that sounds crazy. nost of the time you have a set copay for dr's like 15.00 or 20.00 or what ever and then they cover a percentage of the hospital cose like 80% 90% etc after a deductable is met. I can't imgaine that the dr would charge that much for his portion

nope...nothing....it funny you know...cause people here are always bitching about our health care system, and then I hear about people like you who have to pay to have a baby, and another lady said she had to pay for her rhogam shot and stuff...and i think, we don't have it so bad here. lol....we don't have to get maternity from our work....we pay out of each paycheck a bit toward Employment Insurance, so if you get preg. or laid off, you can collect EI....it's 55% of your bi-weekly wage. And I get one year maternity. Plus we pay premiums for medical so when we need care it's a done deal pretty much. and then extended medical and dental we pay for through our work. i only pay 30/month or extended....my rhogam shot is paid, my hospital stay..paid for....except if i want a private room then i pay alittle extra. but 500 to have a baby? never heard of it!! that's crap!! lol...

where are you guys from...are you in the states? is your health care privatized? is that why it's like that? everything goes through the government here.

Name: firsttimer | Date: Feb 21st, 2007 7:54 PM
yes the states brooke, and nothing goes through the government unless you are on medicare, which is difficult and part of our welfare system. in other words if you dont have insurance you are screwed.

i got the maternity card which is going to offer discounts on everything from labs, hospitalization, postnatal care, the baby's perdiatrician. but it's just discounts, but it will help me save some money. my parents support me and they make too much money for me to get on medicare or whatever...which is ok, there are people out there who need it more than me.

damn, luckily they have changed the requirement that you have to be in school to be on your parents insurance. my parents are like damn we will be getting a kick back for the baby this year, because they wil claim us both as dependents

I have to pay a $100 day for the hospital and then the OB fee is another $50 so it shouldn't be too bad. Considering what it actually costs, I'd consider yourself lucky with only having to pay $500.

the hospital now-a-days is just so freaking overrated...i mean they charge you 10 dollars for 1 asprin...i mean it's unreal. when i had my son i was covered with insurance but they sent me a total bill by accident, and it was like 1,100 for me and 1,100 for my son. i was only in labor for 18 hours, and we came home when my son was 27 hours old...it's all retarded.

one of the reasons health care is expensive because of the liability insurance with all of the lawsuit happy freaks in the world.

$500 isn't bad at all...we have pretty good insurance, but the maternity coverage sucks...it only covered 70% of the costs so we had to pay $3000 out of pocket...I would've loved to only pay 500

OMIGOD, i know...when i had my son 1 person was allowed to be in the room with me while i got my epi...well, that's changed. last year, a woman was in labor and she was getting a epi with her husband in the room when all of a sudden he dropped over dead (while she was getting the epi)...well, he had blood clot in his head and it suddenly burst. that stupid woman (white trash) sued the antaesigist (sp) and said that he made her husband die....and she actually won (she collected a killing)...how retarded was that....needless to say where i'm from no one is allowed in the room now while that's happening....for the love of some people....ggooosssshhhh

i had a co-pay of $150 for my delivery. every insurance is different. but i can't believe they didn't let you know this from the beginning

Name: veronim | Date: Feb 22nd, 2007 4:43 AM
yup - Mine is like $1600 australian dollars on top of my private health. Just for going to a private doctor - and that is on top of the $70 every month for my 5 min appointment

A doctor's office doesn't know what everyone's insurance covers or doesn't so I'm not sure how it's up to them to let you know what you have to pay.

well I'm more upset about finding out about this copayment when my Due date it March 16 and we have plenty of other expenses that we were budgeted for since I'm not getting much money for the 6 weeks after I have the baby.
Now the doctor's office does know how much your insurance will cover, it is their responsibilty to find out if they want to get paid. That is why they ask for your insurance information, because they call the insurance conmpany to find out how much is covered and what the copayment is. My copayment is $150 and the insurance covers around 80% of the delivery so that equals out to around $500.
My husband told me not to stress about it. if we don't get it all paid, they will just have to bill us. This is too short notice for them to be asking for a $500 payment when I;ve been seeing them for the past 9 months. I could have maid a payment of $50 each visit and had the $500 paid off by now if I would have known ahead of time

I have a deductible of $275, plus 10% of the bill that I have to pay so I've been making monthly payments towards those during my OB care.

Since my husband's work switched ins companies this year, I'm going to have to pay 2 deductibles worth of my maternity care... I just started a payment plan with my doctor too. Insurance can be really difficult to deal with...I hate it!

I don't have to pay anything, but if you don't have healthcare insurance here you have to pay out of your pocket.

All of you should stop complaining. I have to pay $5,000 to have my baby. My insurance is OK but the maternity is horrible.
