I have a male staffie. 5 yrs old. He is the best thing that ever happened to our family. I have never met a softer, mardier, more loving, loyal dog in my life. (though I must say, the majority I have met with temperments similar have also been staffies) Any dog has the potential to become viscious if not raised correctly, the fact that when staffies do turn they have the power to cause serious damage is what has given them a bad name. What we forget is it is still the owners fault, not the dogs. I have an 18mnth old daughter and to watch them together makes my heart melt. My dog litterally does 'nanny' her. If she struggles to climb on the settee he pushes her up with his nose. She can basially do waht she want's to him (pull ears/tale/fur) and he lets her and loves it!!! Obviously we stop her from doing this but she is quite sneaky and you have to take your eyes off them sometimes! Staffies do need firm training as they can be quite cheeky, more often not when they don't listen its because they don't want to not because they don't understand however most Staffies main aim is to please you and I have found that giving plenty of praise when your staffie does good is a much easier way to train than telling them off when they do wrong (not to say they shouldn't be told but a firm voice will be much more effective than shouting/hitting when you have to discipline them) If you are getting a dog and you have or are planning to have a family then my advice would be to get a staffie from a pup as you will know their background and this helps for human and dog t trust each other. Also, early socialisation with other dogs, people, children and places is the most important thing you can do to ensure that your dog grows into a healthy, stable, reliable part of the family.

If you teach it from the moment you get it, it will do as you tell. Introduce your dog to your son and see how your Staffy reacts. He/She should get along perfect with your son. Good look to your wife with your new born!

I have a question about my pit. He gets used to anyone after just a few minutes and a few sniffs-EXCEPT for my one friend "Steven." My dog hates this guy with a passion. He would never attack-but he stays 20 feet away from him-and with a circle in my house-where ever Steven is-he paces back and forth 2/3 of the circle. If Steven talks to him he growls...if Steven LOOKS at him he growls-but always keeping a huge distance. Steven loves dogs-has a couple of his own. We have actually held my dog (Buzz) down-literally wrestled him to the ground and pinned him-and Steven petted him and talked to him SO nice-but still he hates this guy. I would never worry about him attacking-Buzz makes SURE not to get near him. Anyone think of any reason why a dog would do this to ONLY one person? I trust this dog 100% with my grandkids-and EVERYONE else. Steven has been here 10 times or more. I usually end up just putting Buzz in his kennel til Steven leaves-he drives us nuts with his nervous pacing! Help! Deb

Possibly Steve is afraid of Buzz, and buzz can sense it. Or it is quite possible that Buzz just dosn't like Steve! Dogs are no different then people, they don't always like every one they meet!
