I have had several pet rats, they make the best rodent pets! Even better than gerbils mice and hampsters. What do you think?

I have had rats live with me several times. The last ones where Timmy and Dora, Dora was timmys daughter. They both died do to old age, they where about 4 years old. Timmy went first and we just lost Dora about 4-5 months ago. They do make wonderfull pets!!

Rats are good
I also used to love my mice, but they don't live very long
Hamsters are evil
Gerbils are way too fast and hyperactive

Wow!!! It sounds like you have a problem. Do you realize how many mice you will end up with if you don't separate the males from the females? You are looking at 100s of mice! I would remove the pregnant mom, let her have her baby's in a separate cage. In the mean time start sexing the others and separating them. Good luck!

I'd love to keep pet rats some day. But I already have dogs, cats, birds and fish. And my ambition is to keep horses next. And what with a baby on the way! How long do they live?

I find there are differences between males and females. The males can get a bit moody when they come in to maturity and they have huge testicles that secrete on what ever they walk on. My males I always had neutered, that made them much sweeter in nature also taking care of the huge secreting testicles. The females are sweet as pie but they are more prone to tumors. When you go to purchase your pet rat be sure you handle him/her feeling for lumps, be sure the eyes are free of mucous and there is no runny nose this could indicate a respiratory infection. Rats are fun little animals with a lot of energy they need stimulation and they love to roam. They can be taught tricks and if taken care of well they can live up to 4-5 years.

I have a pet rat. I was only supposed to "Ratsit" for a while. But now he is mine and I would not give him back! I felt so bad for him being stuck in his cage-so took the top off and he has the run of one whole counter in my dining room that I don't use-except for a radio and a tv on it. I made him a shoebox bedroom with a front and back door-he keeps the front door blocked with kleenex...he has his own box of tissues. He is an awesome pet. 3 times he has fell off of the counter and diasppeared...but my very nice pitbull always shows me where the rat is in the morning when we get up. He always heads to one particular closet that I leave the door open a few inches. And I have a ton of blankets in this closet-without the dog (Buzz) to show me where the rat is...I would never be able to find him on my own. Sometimes when the rat is out front on the countertop my pit gets up on his hind legs and they sniff noses a bit. I also have a cat and a weenie dog-they all know they belong here-and no one pet bothers the others. Quite a houseful of pets. A Pit-a Weenie-a cat-and a rat. And we all get along wonderful. When the rat has to go potty he jumps into his cage and does his thing. And then sleeps either in his shoe box or behind the tv. I hope my daughter never does want him back-he is mine!!! Rats are great pets-they don't bite-and they don't pee on you like hamsters and all them other (dirty little) rodents do!!! Love my rat!!! Deb p.s. I work in a nursing home-and most of my residents love it when I bring him to visit!

i currently have 3 ratties and i love them! there adorable..each with their own little personalities and soo intelligent (almost equal to a cats ive heard)...i think there much better then gerbils or hamsters because they just seem to be on a higher level

yes, it would be in the best interest for your tootie to have a friend because they naturally live in groups and my rats sleep together and groom eachother all the time !

Rats can live for up to about 5 years if cared for properly. When I say cared for properly.... I mean vetting them when they are sick. All my rats lived to be 4-5 years old. Rats are highly prone to tumors all my rats developed them, the females more then the males. I had to have the tumors surgically removed or the rat would have eventually died. You must watch their teeth as well often times they will get to long needing trimming if not trimmed they will not be able to eat. With out the proper care a rats life span is only about 1-2 years maybe if you are lucky they may live to 3 years.

I agree whole heartedly! I've been bitten by countless hamsters, mice, gerbils, etc., but very rarely by a rat. I've owned rats as pets since third grade and I graduated in 2005. So obviously I've had them a good long while! They make wonderful pets and even get along well with my other animals, such as my chihuahua Tino.

I'll be starting a breeding program here soon to provide wonderful pet rats to Kentucky residents. It is my goal to breed healthy, well socialized rats that will make better companions.

Feed it anything you would eat as well as its normal food and blocked food. I just gave my 3 girls a handful of dog food and OMG they all were hording and usually only Gacie hords the food. baby food is good as well as mixed veggies. Stayaway from to much sugar, acidic foods and iceberg lettuce. 2 of my girls Gracie and Peaches are hairless and Sadie my newest I got for Christmas is a hooded. She is so soft and I think she will be my escape artist. LOL I would give them up for anything.
