Thanks for quick reply on the rescued rat. This rat is pure white and not afraid of me (when I discovered it outside it approached me right away when I offered a nut) so I'm pretty sure it's domestic. The two times I have been bitten I had put my hand into the cage. I'd read about not feeding through the bars so I avoid that. I always let him come to me so he doesn't feel cornered or afraid. Interestingly, he always seems quite "happy" when I come home from work: wakes up and comes right to the front of the cage. Maybe he's had some bad handling. I'd really like to socialize him, as I will probably look for a good home....or maybe even keep him if it works out.

Yes I would say your assumption about him being domestic is correct, I have never seen a all white wiled rat before. He may have has some bad handling also another thing to consider is he may be territorial of his space. What is the sex of the rat? males can be very territorial, I have had many pet rats in my life and if any became territorial they were males. My females were never territorial. Once my male became territorial I would neuter him and it always solved the problem.

Try allowing him to come out of the cage on his own then try approaching him with your hand. You sound like you have done your research on how to handle rats, thats good! Also rats don't have a very long life span maybe 2-3 years at best thats if you don't vet them. My rats all lived to be about 5 years old because I vetted them.

Your rat wont be lonely if you spend lots of time with him, play with him, One rat is better than no rat at all. Rats are very friendly little critters and love People.

I have a serious question what do you get out of having a pet rat? I mean when you have a dog you get love from the dog and they are a companion. What do you get from a rat?

I need help. I know nothing about owning a rat and my kids dad sent her home with one about 2 weeks ago. We have everything that we need for it. But I have a few questions for you guys..... 1 at what age can you tell the sex? 2. what can i use to lessen the smell of the cage, right now the litter we are using isnt doing too much 3. when we got Mittens out the other day I noticed that she had some "crust" around her eyes, today her one eyes was sealed shut. What is this and what can I do for it? Thanks in advance for you help. PS I was a little upset at first but now I really love this little guy!!!

I have a pet rat that ive had for easily six months as soon as we put her in the cage with my other two girls she started screaming everythime we touched her. Picking her up is even worse she screams like shes being killed. Ive had pet ratties several time through out my life and have never experienced this before. Ive tried food to get her to trust me and it does not work a lick. She was certainly not bred for food and I am honestly at my wit end does anyone have any ideas?

reading the forum, I saw everyone just saying whatever they want (on topic), so here's my two cents:
a few years ago, I had a female rat and was given 2 males (aka take them or else). they procreated rapidly and I soon found myself in a room with 23 rats. When I moved, I sold all the rats to a pet store (like $1.50 each) and did not own any pets for a while.
I got 2 rats in october of 2009. they came with a large cage and small cage plus a bucket of rotting food and a bag of bedding that I know you shouldn't give to rats. After correcting my suppies issues, I found that they are great pets and all have unique personalities (the rats are polarized like magnets).
recently, my parents were babysitting a miniature dachshund (weiner dog) and he killed the better of the 2. today, I went and picked up an albino rat (can't have 1 rat living alone) and she's great so far. I'm trying to introduce the 2 gradually like I've heard so much about on the internet.

I have been dieing for a pet rat, what can I do to make my mom say yes, I made a 22pg power point, I wrote her a letter 4 pages long, I have bought books about rats and showed her how much I care, I even made 3 dozen rat treats!
I have a pet mouse I'm not paying to much attention to but, they are so timid, my mouse is sweet but.. just boring and she is so scared of me. I used to be possessed with playing with my mouse, but I lost interest! and how much is it to get a single rat fixed?
