Lydia be sure to remove the male from the cage because as soon as the female starts birthing it will arouse the male making him want to mate with her.

Keep in mind The gestation period for a rat is normally 22 days, but can vary from 21 to 23 (and maybe even to 25)

Lindalu,
My angle baby has a respiratory infection and is on antibiotics but still has the nose bleed. We have not been able to figure out what is causing her to get sick. This is her third one in 8 months. I am very careful about bedding and cleaning her cage and she has free run of the house most of the time that I am home (she never leaves the linoleum kitchen floor so it is no big deal) do you have any ideas? None of the other animals are getting sick either so do you think that maybe she is just suffering from a weak immune system?

Cheri what kind of bedding are you using? Never use pine or cedar it can be deadly to small animals. Also you mentioned you allow it to roam free on your linoleum floor, is the floor new? The glue that is used to adhere the linoleum to the floor can also cause infection. Keep in mind any air fresheners such as candles and air sprays can also cause a problem for small animals. Another cause I have seen for respiratory problems is that the rat is in a tank, unlike a cage a tank will hold the ammonia from the urine causing the rat to inhale it.

I never heard of any one getting bumps on their hands after handling a rat. I only assume you mean your hands. What do the bumps look like are they itchy, small, large?

Baba I have been doing some online research about rat allergies and I did find that the urine from the rat can cause a mild hand rash. I also found a message board that is specifically about rats. Good luck!

I am a first time rat owner. Flower is a female, and she has this odd habit of coming up to me and opening her mouth around the tip of my finger. She'll do this when she's just walking around on the couch and I'm sitting there. She'll walk up to me and look as if she's biting me, but she applies no pressure. It just freaks me out, because I don't know what she is doing and why she's doing it. My neighbor suggested that it could be a love bite. If that makes any sense. Help Please! I want to make sure it's nothing, because I essentially bought her for my 3 year old daughter. I just have more contact with her than she does. I, of course take care of her, and try to make sure she's getting the proper outside of her cage time with us. I just don't want her to bite me or my child or anyone in the family for that matter.

Thats sweet!

I have not yet got another rat, although I do love them they can be work at times. The ones I had in the past I would take them with me when I went out I was even able to teach them to do tricks.

At this time in my life I don't have the time to care for one, so I will wait to get another one until I have more time.

You enjoy your new friend they are friendly smart little animals.

I recently rescued a pet rat that was wandering the streets outside my apartment. It came to me readily, and I was able to get it into a cage easily. The problem is biting. All the rat sites I've visited say rats don't bite. This one does. It does not display any aggressive or fearful behavior. It seems to think my finger is food. It sniffs in a friendly manner and then...chomp. What can I do about this? I'm afraid to handle this rat...and afraid to give it away for fear it will end up back on the streets.

You say it bites? when this happens it it when you put your fingers through the cage bars? Most rats will develop a biting behavior only when fingers are placed through the bars. Why this happens is because people feed them through the bars so when you put your fingers through they think its food. Try opening the cage door and reaching in for the rat through the door opening, you may see a totally different behavior. Also are you sure its a domestic rat? some street rats look very similar to domestic store bought ones.

Thanks for quick reply on the rescued rat. This rat is pure white and not afraid of me (when I discovered it outside it approached me right away when I offered a nut) so I'm pretty sure it's domestic. The two times I have been bitten I had put my hand into the cage. I'd read about not feeding through the bars so I avoid that. I always let him come to me so he doesn't feel cornered or afraid. Interestingly, he always seems quite "happy" when I come home from work: wakes up and comes right to the front of the cage. Maybe he's had some bad handling. I'd really like to socialize him, as I will probably look for a good home....or maybe even keep him if it works out.
